I don't have a slow cooker but everytime I think of wintertime sunday's I want one. What's a great slow cooker recipe that you've tried?

Cook a picnic shoulder in one all day with water and your choice of spices. When completely cooked, drain water and shred with a fork. Mix in barbecue sauce and hot sauce liberally. Enjoy with coleslaw on a roll.

I've done that in an oven after marinating it in beer with spices for at least 24hrs. Cook like 8hrs at 325. Pork shoulder is so cheap and so fucking good. Its like 8 dollars for a ton of meat.

I went to K-Mart last week and saw them on sale. I'm thinking about buying one this week.

Slow cookers are great because whatever you cook in them goes through the whole house. The best when it's snowing out.
Put a few Irish potatoes, carrots, salt, pepper, a quartered head of cabbage, and a corned beef brisket in your slow cooker early in the morning. Put it on low, and go to work. When you come home your house smells great and you have an excellent meal.
The next morning, slice the leftover meat, drain off the water, and scramble meat and vegetables into a few eggs for a hell of a breakfast sandwich.
Or, also with cabbage:
Mix in a medium sized can of tomato sauce, a pound of browned ground beef, a can of kidney beans, and water with a quartered head of cabbage. Cook all day. Great diet soup--can give you the farts.

OMG, I haven't had cholent in YEARS and I always thought it would work really well in a slow cooker ... and I met a girl at work who does hers in a slow cooker for Shabbat.
I forget what the Sephardi version of cholent is, but my friend Dave always used to describe it as if it were the best thing ever.

I posted this somewhere else, but I'm posting it here, since I'm making it for tomorrow.
I'm using an eye of round roast, because it was on sale, but 2 to 3 pound chuck roast works best. Salt and pepper the roast, then sear it on all sides. Place it in the cooker and add medium quartered potatoes, carrots, a quartered onion, and a stalk of celery.
Add a beef bullion cube, a pack onion soup mix, a 12 ounce can of coke, and enough water to cover everything. If you're cooking on high, cook it for 4 hours. I always cook mine on low for 8-10 hours. The coke will tenderize the meet. A big roast like the one I'm using will be tender. If you use the chuck roast, it will melt in your mouth.
The prep time is 10 minutes max, it's easy as shit, and it tastes great.

the one that i break out several times a year is a slow cooker kielbasa and sauerkraut german style.. made with some german beer, ground up potato, mustard, carraway seeds... mmm.. could eat that for days, which i did, because last time i didn't realize just how much meat 4 pounds of sausage was combined with two large cans of sauerkraut.
sort of like this..
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Slow-Cooker-Kielbasa-and-Beer/Detail.aspx
except add in some honey as someone suggests and put on some carraway seeds, which really do make the dish. read the comments on the page, lots of good suggestions.

I have one, and have not used it in a while, but I made a whole chicken with potatoes and carrots and carrots, and it was like a stew. If I did not make it like a stew, would it dry out?

That's pretty much what I do, but instead of Coke I put in a can of a dark beer.

Looking for a slow cooker recipe for chicken noodle soup, I just found RECIPEZAAR.COM (http://www.recipezaar.com/recipes.php?categ=preparation%2Ccrockpot). What I really like about this site, is it includes the nutritional facts for each recipe. I'm definitely bookmarking this one.
Oh, and it's not just for slow cookers, but the link I posted goes directly to the slow cooker ones.

Italian Sausage and Scalloped Potatoes
2 1/2 pounds of potatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
1 pound fully cooked Italian Sausage, sliced 1/2-inch thick
2 medium onions, chopped
1 10 3/4-ounce can of condensed cheddar cheese soup
1 10 /34-ounce can of condensed cream of celery soup
Layer one-third of the potatoes, one-third of the sausage, one-third of the onion and one-third of the cheddar cheese soup. Repeat layers two more times. Top with cream of celery soup.
Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 4 to 5 hours.
I cook it on low. Like landarch said, by the time it's been cooking for a few hours, the whole house smells delicious.
Telling you all now, this is a fantastic winter-time meal.
Especially if it's snowing.
Enjoy.

THIS (http://www.recipezaar.com/198707) is the chicken noodle soup recipe that I cooked today. I didn't have bay leaves, and I added two cloves of minced garlic. I used 3.5 cups of broth and 4.5 cups of water with 4 cubes of chicken bullion. When I got to the part where you take the chicken out to pull it apart, the whole chicken completely disintegrated. Pretty damn good soup!
I like to slow cook ALF ribs and let them marinade in their own juices.
Fucking delicious.

This is one of 8's favorite recipes I've made for him.
Pizza in a Bowl
26-oz jar marinara sauce
14.5-oz can diced tomatoes
4 oz low-fat pepperoni (or substitute prosciutto), diced or sliced
1.5 cups fresh sliced mushrooms
1 large bell pepper, diced
1 large red onion, chopped
1 cup water
1 Tbsp Italian seasoning
1 cup dry macaroni
shredded mozzarella
Combine all ingredients except cheese in slow cooker.
Cover. Cook on low 5-6 hours.
Ladle into soup bowls and sprinkle with cheese.

I made Yankee Cheater Pulled Pork (http://www.recipezaar.com/Yankee-Cheater-Pulled-Pork-209351)
It was the first time I used a slow cooker. It came out really good. But instead of 1 tablespoon of seasoning salt I'm going to use a 1/2 of a tablespoon next time I make it. I'm loving the slow cooker!
I also had the other half of beer with the sammie.:drunk:

I did the chicken noodle soup (http://www.recipezaar.com/Slow-Cooker-Chicken-Noodle-Soup-198707) for the second time tonight. Damn. This is some of the best chicken soup I've ever had! I followed the recipe, but I added more carrots, 5 cups of noodles instead of 3, and threw in some leftover peas. The recipes says to use 8 cups of broth or water. That's obviously a huge difference. I used 4 cups of broth, 4 cups of water, and 2 chicken bullion cubes. REALLY freaking delicious!

I picked up a deal on a 4.5 pound leg of lamb tonight, and I want to cook it in the slow cooker. I've never cooked lamb before. Most of the recipes call for rosemary and vegetable stock. I don't have rosemary, but I have several other herbs. I don't have vegetable stock, but I do have beef stock. Should I just wing it, or wait a day to cook it with the rosemary and V stock?

It will taste better (probably) with the vegetable stock...rosemary is good but there are lots of other ways to make it.

Thyme is good, garlic, basil in olive oil is a nice mix and don't forget the pepper and salt (I dont use much salt in anything but thats neither here nor there. Rub it into the meat and let it sit a bit before you put it in the stock. Some people like mint and mint jelly, but I have none of those tendencies.

Yeah I think that would work. If the garlic is chopped I dont think it needs to be placed in the meat. I would just do the thyme and basil if you have it. With the beef stock I might skip the soy and add half the amount with a red vinegar instead.

What kind of ribs are you looking to make? A slow cooker is built for ribs.

Can't find it. It's easy though. Just mix a bottle of sauce with a half cup of orange juice. Coat both sides of the ribs and cover the pan tightly with foil. Cook at 300 degrees for about 4 hours flipping halfway through. Cook it for about another 10 minutes each side with the foil off to thicken the sauce.
BTW... I'm doing that pulled pork one again that I posted above. Stop on by in two days. There'll be plenty!
