I went to defrag my laptop and i got a warning that said "(C: )Hard Drive is protected by the microsoft volume shadow service. We do not recommend scanning / defragging the microsoft shadow protected drive. do you still want to continue?" Does my laptop dare to dare me? I want to do it just out of spite, but then thought about it, and maybe I shouldn't. Anyone deal with this before, and should I do it?:help:

Basically, when you have this activated and you attempt to do a defrag, the VSS will record what clusters are being moved, and there are so many movements tracked that it fills up the "quota" for shadow copy, THUS it will erase older copies recorded.

What version of Windows are you running? XP?
What program are you using to defrag? The built in MS one?

I disabled that from working, and I started using Auslogics Disk Defrag. It is one of the best and top downloaded Defragger's out there, and it works great AND is free! And it will resolve your issue, as it is VSS Friendly, and won't cause problems.

I'd check out Auslogics I posted above. I run Vista also, and like I mentioned it is completely Volume Shadow Copy friendly, and won't cause problems. It appears that you Defrag program is not compatible.

If you don't want to use Auslogics, being that it is completely safe and one of the best on the market, you may want to see if there is a newer version of that software available that is Volume Shadow Copy safe. Honestly, I haven't been able to find a good review of that Defrag software, nor have I ever heard of it.

No worries. Since you paid for it, I would def verify if there is an actual software update for it. If you are unable to upgrade, get in touch with their software support and pose this exact question to them.

Best of luck.

I have to agree with Geno that the Auslogics Defrag is great. I have used it extensively and never been disappointed - XP, Vista, what have you.

I especially like using it on Vista systems since the built in Vista defrag is so unwieldy/blows goats.
