View Full Version : Streaming XM through a proxy server?

Hey Buddays!

I have a huge problem, I've been moved to a new office and my XM radio gets ZERO signal. All streaming media is blocked, but a friend told me to use a proxy server. When I use the proxy server the XM site doesn't let me sign in, so I can't open up the stream.

Does anyone listen online through a proxy server? Or does anyone have any ideas? Are there any sites that have free podcasts of the recent shows?

I haven't listened to Ron and Fez in over a week!!!!! I'm going crazy here!!!!

Free podcast of the shows wouldn't go over too well since you are supposed to subscribe to sirius/xm to hear the show.

I think the shows are available for sale at Audible.

If you don't mind listening to the shows recorded you can pick up an inno/myfi/nexus fairly cheaply and record the shows at midnight and listen the next day.

Yeah, I know free podcasts wouldn't go over too well, but I remember some people talking about downloading the shows or streaming the show for free and telling people they'd be dumb to pay for it.

I'm definitely not going to pay for the podcasts as I'm already an XM subscriber I just can't get a signal and can't listen online.

Am I just screwed here, or is there a way other than buying a new xm radio and recording at night?

I think you're screwed. They've probably blocked all ports except for web browsing. You'll have to get on another network. Maybe there's an open wireless point nearby.

Since you have an XM account, you can record the xm stream at night to your computer and transfer it to your mp3 player to listen to the next day at work.

If your car is outside your office keep your xm on to 202.And try tuning a small radio to your car radio fequency.I can listen on my home stereo from my cars radio in the driveway.

Two suggestions:

1. Use your blackberry or phone/pda device to tether to a computer or laptop, then stream over the EVDO or HSDPA networks. You have to have an unlimited data plan on your phone so your bill is not OUTRAGEOUS, but the stream will work if you have high speed data coverage (most metropolitan areas), as I have been doing it for sometime.

2. Use Audible, pay the 35 dollars a year, and just listen to them at night.

It's only $35 a year? If that's the case, then I can just do that.

Man you really don't realize how shitty work is when you don't have your XM, haha!

How exactly do you do this?

A Very geeky method that bypasses company's computers. But you need to subscribe to the online feed and have a flat smartphone plan&home internet plan.

If you have an iPhone, pay the extra three bucks for the Sirius XM app...I've got it on all day every day at work listening to different stuff on the platform, including 202....second best money I've ever spent (MLB app for $10 was the best).

How long does your battery last while using the xm app?

Well, when I'm at my desk, it stays plugged into my computer, so it's charging most of the day and not draining anything.

When I had the regular 3G iPhone, I could get like an hour, to an hour and a half unplugged

With the 3GS, I've probably gone three hours at a time without plugging in and still had like 30% of the battery life.

You'd get even better battery life if you can connect to WiFi instead of 3G.

If the IT weasels have blocked the ports for streaming media then you're hooped. Our office had that issue till I submitted a request to have them open it up since some of our vendors/partners use online streaming to deliver training. Received sign-off and ports are opened up  As for free sites...couldn't say about R&F but I know there are a few people who post torrents for each O&A show.

That sounds like a Bob Eatman deal!

I really wish there was more data device competition in Canada. Simply no way to have a cost effective method to stream that kind of data to a blackberry or iphone :(
