i stayed at the Luxor it was pretty awesome the walls are slanted and the windows are large so it looks cool....it is obviously all egyptian themed and I saw the Blue Man Group there as well....i highly recommend it but its not the best one there but it is a good one!

We stayed at the planet hollywood and thought it was awesome. The rooms were HUGE! the pool was aiiight.

But the casino was all brand new and super clean. Plus you are smack in the middle of all the good hotels.

Dave and I did a ton of walking...

Make sure you do this when you go:

FYI, the Luxor was bought by MGM & they are currently REMOVING the Egyptian theme from it's interior, rumour is that the new theme will be the films of MGM Studios, but it's STILL a Pyramid, HA HA HA!!! The Palazzo which is really The Venetian Pt.2 gets VERY HIGH ratings!!! Good Luck & ENJOY, wherever U go!!!

I stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel. It was very nice, but kinda off the beaten path. If you're gonna go, I'd wanna be on the main drag.

Just stay away from the Palms. I've seen better casinos in AC.

If you aren't staying at The Palazzo or The Wynn then you're staying at the wrong hotel. Do visit the Hard Rock pool though, hands down best in Vegas.

I've been to Vegas 9 times this year alone... definitely the Planet Hollywood. The Mrs. and I use Priceline a day or so before we go and the last few times Planet Hollywood has been the takers for deep discounts ($75/night on weekends for a 4 star hotel... unheard of!). I've also stayed at other places like LuXor, MGM Grand, Sahara, Stardust (may it RIP), NY-NY, Hooters, etc.
By far, just like Casey said, Planet Hollywood is the newest and nicest of the bunch.

The north part (Sahara, Riviera, Circus Circus) of the strip is much older and the rooms aren't as nice. They do offer cheap rates and cheap food compared to the rest of the strip to get people to show up. Weekdays are MUCH cheaper than weekends, anywhere you stay.

The south part is the newer trendier part of the strip and it's also the most expensive.

Like someone said, the Palms (and Rio and Hard Rock) are off the strip, so you'll need to pay for a taxi to get back and forth. I don't really like them either.

Also, like BOBO said... MGM bought the Luxor a few years back (as they did alot of others.. they also own NY-NY, Mirage, Treasure Island, Mandalay Bay, Excalibur and a few others.) Anyway, during the 90's the thing to do was to create a theme to each hotel, hence the Egypt theme at Luxor, Knights of the Round Table at Excalibur, the Emerald City of Oz at MGM etc... The trend right now is to de-theme the hotels, making them look all alike with a "chic upscale" kinda deal that I'm not so sure I like. It's kinda bland for me.

As far as the Luxor goes, from what I was told the last time I stayed there was that they are "scaling back" the Egypt theme, not completely removing it. They are kinda stuck with it as long as the building remains a pyramid. The bars and restaurants have all had their Egyptian names taken away and given bland one word hipster names. The carpets have been redone to soothing blues and greens. The feeling the employees had was that it would lean heavily on a "water theme" based on those blues and greens and the Nile River.

Boy, thats a wordy was of saying... go to the Planet Hollywood :)

If you have tons of money though, Wynn Las Vegas is the nicest place in Vegas, in my opinion.

I have been to quite a few of the newer joints in Vegas and I would say the best I have stayed in were the Palazzo, Bellagio, Venetian and the Four Seasons Vegas. Of those I would say that the Palazzo was my personal favorite, with the Four Seasons as a close second.

I am doing The Palazzo in two weeks so I can report back on that one in November. Going fancy and getting a concierge level suite.

I have stayed at The Bellagio, which was very fancy and and great beds and an really nice pool area (huge) and also The Excalibur, which was cheap but it did the job. Pool was tiny.

What are you looking for? Fancy but affordable, fancy where money is no object, cheap, or midrange?

I guess I am looking for fancy/affordable. I stayed at Mandalay Bay the one time I was there years ago and it was pretty good but at the end of the strip. We walked quite a bit, which is fine. The pool seemed great, but I don't have much to compare to.

Hotel Le Dad ... i am going there on 11/23

seriously ... Mandalay Bay is beautiful and they recently re-did a lot of their rooms. Beautiful.
and the Wynn is also top notch. If you want to go off-strip, the Palms is the best for a younger crowd.... and if you want classier go for the Red Rocks Resort in Summerlin.

We made the mistake of walking down the strip for a while on the street. I've never seen so much garbage on the sidewalk in my life, it was fucking gross. We stayed at the NY NY, it was a nice fake feeling.

Then like others have said, Wynn, Bellagio, or Palazzo. The Four Seasons maybe you should skip since it's the top couple of Mandalay Bay and you have already stayed there.

Bellagio is oldest but most well known, Palazzo has the biggest rooms with every one being at least a two room suite, and from what I have read Wynn is the fanciest of the three but with smaller rooms and highest cost.

Check out http://www.smartervegas.com for all the deals for the hotels.

I went there once but didn't stay at any fancy hotels.. how do you think my parents were able to afford me a car.
Ditto to whoever said Ceasars and the Venetian are both gorgeous.. also the Bellagio. The family I use to nanny for would stay there.

I was there recently. Planet Hollywood seems like it's in a good spot which I mean it's walking distance to the other casinos on the Central strip and there's like a mall plaza near it too.

The tram is free (Mandelay to the Excalibur casino) and the Mirage-Treasure Island one.

The Monorail one trip ticket is $5.00

Bottle Soda cost about $2.50 and water about $2.00

I think they just got the Obama wax figure at Madame Tussad's.

The Luxor cafe in the Venetian serves good food.

And you have to learn how to walk the gauntlet. The people that hand out the escort cards promoting adult services. They're everywhere on the sidewalk.

If you sign up for a Binions rewards card you can get your picture with a pill of a million dollars.

There's just so much to do there. Good luck.

You mean the millions of prostitute flyers, or the people handing them out?

As for Vegas hotels, if you're taking the wife, stay at the Paris or the Bellagio. The Paris has a French boulevard inside with shops, cafes, restaurants, etc., and the Bellagio has a gigantic garden you can walk through with her. You'll be her hero.

I just got back from Vegas last night. They had temps last week in the 60's. On day was a record high of 70. We stayed off the strip at the Silverton. It's a small casino with a bass pro shop inside the casino. You have to go see the Neon museum. It's this lot with all the old Vegas signs.
Another off the strip casino is Green Valley Ranch. We went there for pancakes. They have this Pancake house there. That seemed to be a nice casino as well.

I have never been to Vegas and I don't really have an overwhelming desire to go. I find gambling to be immensely boring and I'm not one for Wayne Newtonesque entertainment or magic shows.

yay! the Silverton is our favorite "locals" casino. we take a couple hundred and stretch it on the $5 blackjack tables and bowl at the Hootie bar. i also love sitting in the fishbowl lounge and watching the underwater shows. good times and less expensive and touristy than the places on the strip.

the palms may be the most ghetto place i've ever been. i don't think i could ever stay there. i do not see the appeal. i just felt so gross the moment i walked into the casino.

the first time i went i stayed at the hard rock & loved it. it's not on the strip, so thats a major drawback, but its really nice, the pool was great. & you never know who you're going to see there.

second time i went with my family & we stayed at paris. it was a nice place but a totally different atmosphere than the hard rock.

i'm going back in september & i'll be staying at the hotel at mandalay bay. it's been completely renovated & i heard it's pretty awesome.

i always did want to stay at the luxor, but if that's true about mgm redecorating that just sucks. wrecks the whole charm of the place. it was pretty cool to walk around before.

I've been there 4 times. If money isn't that big of a deal, do yourself a favor and stay at the Bellagio, Wynn or Venetian. They are the most upscale on the strip and don't have some annoying theme. All class.

My favorite place to stay overall is the Mirage for alot of the reasons Hippos said. It's a tad less expensive and just as gorgeous. The buffet is great and if you can get tickets to Love, absolutely do it, its outstanding. I also recommend 'O' if you can swing it at the Bellagio. Mirage has the best sports book in the area and a dynamite poker room.

Another good place is Harrah's. It's a little cheaper and a little lesser scale than the other, but it is in the perfect location, right at the heart of the strip. You can dine, gamble and hang out at the properties nearby and crash at Harrah's when you are done.

I don't recommend Luxor or Excalibur and if you stay at NY, NY I'll shoot you. They are a bit on the far end of the strip and the themes are just hideous. If you do stay down there, Mandalay Bay or MGM are alright.

Definitely take a night to go down to old Vegas: Golden Nugget, Binions, etc. Very hokie but very enjoyable to take in. Shit like the laser light show and deep fried oreos might not be the classiest way to see Vegas, but are enjoyable non the less.

I want to go now so bad its ridiculous.

I stayed @ Green Valley Ranch for a convention. Very nice off strip resort.
