Dear Dr Steve,

Last night i was relaxing on the recliner and in a small area, just below my right shoulder, my skin/flesh began to twitch. It almost feels like there are gas bubbles underneath the skin. This went on intermittently for approx 30 minutes.

I've experienced this in the past in various parts of my body, legs, neck, etc...

Like i've stated it seems like gas bubbles under the skin but just in that immediate area that's twitching. You can see the skin elevate/de-elevate(not sure if that's a word) in a rapid repetition for brief moments(couple seconds)

Thanks,

Funk

Funk:

what you're experiencing are "fasciculations", which are weird feelings in the skin caused by erratic firing of the nerves to the muscles in that part of the body. This causes the muscles to twitch involuntarily and you'll indeed see the skin move around above them. People often complain about twitchy eyelids and stuff (the most common complaint of fasciculations, in my experience), but they can occur anywhere. They generally occur at random and go away on their own. They're not a sign of anything more serious unless they:

1) don't go away
2) just keep getting worse
3) are accompanied by other symptoms, like weakness

anytime you have a weird feeling that takes more than 3-4 words to describe, it's almost always due to a misfiring nerve. Think about it, if you put your hand on a hot stove, the pain is "hot". If you have appendicitis, the pain is "sharp". But if you have a misfiring nerve, people will describe it as "something weird under the skin" or "my skin feels like it's burning except not exactly". Although it's not a perfect rule of thumb, neuropathic symptoms are almost always hard to describe, or described as odd.

There is this thing called "Benign Fasciculation Syndrome" that is basically a more irritating version of the fasciculations I described above. Basically, if you have a fasciculation every once in awhile and never report it to your doctor, you're fine, but if the symptoms get bad enough that you have to seek professional help, they'll label you with BFS.

Here's a wiki article on this annoying-as-crap syndrome:
