Could this film be remade? Why hasn't anyone tried?

It was remade. The Wiz. There was also an animated version, I believe. We just watched Return to Oz last night, really creepy and weird.

they made a sequel, return to oz staring Fairuza Balk.
but a true remake? i don't think it could be pulled off. it would either be too corny, or too twisted, like that tin man reimaging they did last year on sci fi.

it could never be done, because they would add in to much CGI and just make it annoying. they did make a black version called The Wiz with Michael Jackson in it.

Why not remake Gone With the Wind or The Godfather?
Some movies should be left alone. Remember when they did a scene by scene remake of Psycho?

Wicked is supposed to be made into a movie eventually, once the box office dies down a bit on broadway.

Wicked the BOOK was phenomenal... and I hope if they do make it into a movie they stay tight with that outline.
The show was pretty close to the book... and the music was great.... but the book itself would be a better home base to write a screenplay against. Though they would probably clean it up as they did to The Color Purple...
luckily Wicked really is so much different from The Wizard of Oz that it couldn't really be considered a remake or spin-off.

WICKED is the greatest prequel I've ever seen.
I hate musicals with a passion but, I reluctantly saw WICKED and it totally knocked my dick in the dirt. The way they dealt with the backstory AND kinda made a sequel all at once is just brilliant.
If they ever bring Oz to the big screen again, I hope it's not a remake. I hope it's WICKED. Big time.

I read somewhere that my little chick-a-dee from Pushing Daisies was the original Glenda. That would have been nice to see.

Yep. Kristin Chenewidth (sp?) was Glinda when I saw the show. I was also lucky enough to see Idina Menel (sp??) play Elphaba in that same cast. Taye Diggs was there too.
I loved it.

But imagine all the merchandising they could do. Cute little flying monkeys, crying cowardly lion dolls, Tin Man ash trays, helium balloons to help the kiddies sound like real Munchkins, Professor Marvel Meth Lab, the possibilities are endless.

No more silly than an Ark, Shankra Stones or a wooden cup.
BUT, I would like to see George Lucas violently rape a flying monkey. Watching him do that to a stormtrooper was hilarious.

YES! this is what i wonder about. the book was different from the movie. and there is a whole series to turn to film. gregory maguire did a great job making the story into a novel, he left the original story but changed the background details to create a story that was relevant and more adult styled and interesting. why cant a screenwriter take that story and make another great film? the story, filming and sets of the 30's version can only be improved. it was a great movie but it DOES have flaws.
