My iBook G4 is getting pretty old and I want to back up my data if this thing should crash some day. Can anyone recommend a good external hard drive that is Mac compatible?

This should work fine for you (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11313868&search=hard%20drive%20mac&Mo=3&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Sp=S&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=hard%20drive%20mac&Ntt=hard%20drive%20mac&No=3&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1)

or if you want to keep it entirely mac products try this (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB276LL/A)

Pretty much everything is Mac compatible. If you really want a good, quality drive and quality controller, go with a G-Tech. I have one for video editing and with the amount of use it gets, it has never failed me. I used 5 of them set-up as a raid when I was doing professional video editing. Also, the LaCie drives have served me well.

If you are looking for a cheap drive, check out Tiger Direct (http://www.tigerdirect.com) or Buy.com (http://www.buy.com). Also, MacMall (http://www.macmall.com) is a great place to buy anything Mac related, including hard drives.

And on a note from the above poster, don't buy the Time Capsule unless you need a wireless base station as well.

I use LaCie drives as well and they're great, EXCEPT the porche drive. I don't know why I even bothered with them - I think I got a deal - and what I learned is that you get what you pay for, especially with hard drives.

do you have a desktop mac?
you can boot your powermac in firewire target disc mode, and the desktop will recognize its hd as a normal external hd so you can copy files.

have an ipod?
reformat it and temporarily use it to house your files.

if neither of those is an option, does your g4 have usb2? if not stick with fire wire hard drives. the cheapest route would be to get a nice maxtor 500gb drive (usually around 70 bucks) and a firewire hard drive case.

if you want to buy a prepackaged unit the maxtors are very inexpensive, i got an external 500gb for 90 bucks, its mac compatible out of the box.
