View Full Version : So... We just bought a house.

I know I've been mentioning here and there over the past few months that Liz and I bought a house, but I never started a true thread about it because it didn't feel real to me.
We closed earlier this month, but we didn't move in yet because of the Avon Breast Cancer walk and then the shit hit the fan at work.
Well, today was the day we dedicated to moving in. Liz and I along with a team of help moved about 90 percent out of our apartment into our new house.
I'm currently posting this in my newly painted bedroom, relaxing on my bed and watching the NASCAR race.
We'll be living out of boxes for the next week or so while we figure out what goes where... but holy crap. We have a house.
It's awesome. And for as shitty as the past month has been because of work issues, I feel so relaxed and so good.
And we'll actually be able to sleep with the windows OPEN, something we haven't been able to do since our honeymoon. (Our previous place was a first floor apartment, so I never wanted to sleep with the windows open due to issues of people in the neighborhood.)

How exciting!!! Congrats!
My boyfriend and I are closing on a townhouse next Friday. We plan to rip down as much wallpaper as possible and repaint everything starting that Friday and hope to be moved in the weekend after that. It hasn't quite hit yet. I'm sure it will when we start destroying that wallpaper.
We have already starting making Home Depot and Lowes trips a frequent occurrence. (Mostly because we have 5 rooms to paint, and I'm constantly checking their stock of mistints. I've already gotten a $30 gallon of paint for $5!)
Anyhow, it's all super exciting. Anyone who is even thinking of buying a house should look now!

It's funny. I don't have a big lawn, but I used to HATE cutting the lawn when I was younger. We had this Honda push-mower that was the bane of my existence.
The lawn mower I'm using for this house? The same Honda push-mower that's close to 20 years old, and I can't wait to use it.
As for Snowblower - we'll see.

Go and get your own fire extinguisher. In fact, get two. Do not trust the one that is there. Better to be safe. Also, how new are the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors? A good smoke detector is $10 and acarbon monoxide detector is $20. Again, don't depend on the previous owner for these safety items that are cheaply replaced.

the fixing and decorating never ends. I am buying laminate flooring today at ikea of all places (I know I know) because it is such a bargain..(they have a sale for 0.49/sqft while it normally is 1.20) . wont install it until next year spring though... the carpet is 5 years old and still looks good and will be warmer over the winter.
I am starting to think about new paints, cause well, the last time I painted was about 5 years ago as well... just redid my window treatments and am looking to get a new couch in the next 2 years.
it really never ends.

Are your payments 25% or less of your take home income?
If not Dave Ramsey frowns.
Not like that is really possible in many civilized places in America, but that's what he says.

My frugality isn't that bad, but yes, I ran a lot of numbers before we bought the house.
I didn't get a GREAT DEAL on the house like I'm known for when I bought Liz's car and bought my digital camera. Buying a house is a more intimate thing, because it's not like if Best Buy doesn't have the house you want at the price you want, you can't walk away to circuit city for a price match.
But we loved the house, and paid what we thought it was worth. The number I had in my head was the number we ended up paying.
And besides, with the current stringent lending deals, if the bank didn't think we were low risk, they wouldn't have given us the money. I gave them a lot of docs but most of them were voluntarily; the only thing they wanted after the first underwriting review was another copy of the contract because it didn't fax right.

We'll be subject to the same sorts of unsolicited advice as every other parent on the planet. I figure I'll learn to smile and nod ... and come up with those witty comebacks that make an unsolicted advice-giver kick themselves later on when they realize I've insulted them.

Ohhh congrats Aggie. Trust me, the pros of owning the house will FAR outweigh the cons. I get up every morning look out the living room window at the lake and thank the powers that be that I live where I do and not in a cramped apartment.
We moved in here a year ago and I would not move back into town if someone gave me a house for free.
Its also amazing how much stuff you can do/fix yourself when you put your mind to it.

Thanks hunnerbun! A lake view sounds beautiful and I wouldn't want to move either! We're in the suburbs but there is a nice pretty big yard with lots of mature trees and landscaping. That's what I'm going to have to read up on because I've really never done any in my life. I really want an herb garden and maybe some vegetables as well. I think I will really enjoy that once I'm not intimidated by it.

Only thing is you have to keep the house as owner occupied for three years and you have to pay it back if you dont. Also the check said it will take 8-14 weeks to go through but I doubt it will take that long.

I will be poor, thanks Staten Island and their ridiculous prices for a town house
