Ford Motor Co is adding a standard technology on 2010 models MyKey a feature that limits a teen driver to 80mph,top stereo volume, require seatbelts on to start the car and other safe driving habits. Have we gone a little too far here?
Big Brother is one step closer to taking over.

the cars will soon turn off if you do not take the exact route given to you by your GPS.

why 80 mph? why not 65 or 70? still seems kinda dangerous.

It apparently starts with audible tones at the speed limits and caps out at 80mph

Best part is their will be some kid who will know how to trip out the setting and will post it on YOUTUBE.

How does it know that a teen is driving? I assume that this is a feature that parents turn on and off or have the option of disabling. Yeah, it seems to be somewhat overboard, but I don't have that much of an issue with it if it really comes down to parental choice.

haven't looked into it too much but I think that the early driving years kind of ingrain standard habits and are important to safe driving. They say it takes 7 solid years of driving to become a safe driver... Not sure how it recognizes that the driver is a teen, but the overall concept is not a bad one... it's the teen years that we overestimate our skills and "have to" show off to our buddies...

some states have higher speed limits and they could kinda become a road block in fast flowing traffic if it was limited to that.

and if someone was to tell you that if you didn't turn the option on, you are a bad parent or if your kid kills someone while driving because you didn't use this safety feature what then?
I am just playing devils advocate here.

I am wondering if it is anything like it is with buses and trucks where it records the DL or something...

You would give your kids a different set of car keys. The keys have computer chips in them. They insert the key and the car connects to the chip and that is how the car will know the setting.

I find it odious for the fact that in reinforces the notion of the "nanny state". In this country we continually act/treat other people/think like children...is it any surprise that we end up with the leaders we do, and why nothing ever changes? There is this continual reinforcement of child like behaviour where we just are not able to act like adults for God knows what reason...
We are not children...adults make mistakes....bad things happen and "good things" are not always guaranteed. Live with it people.

Then you deal with snippy parents. People already feel entitled to butt in and give their two cents on other's parenting. When my older daughter was 3, I took her out for pizza and she was drinking out of a glass Snapple bottle. This woman came over and lectured me that I shouldn't let my daughter drink out of a glass bottle because she could drop it and make a big mess. Accidents do happen sometimes, but the kid was handling the bottle just fine. Meanwhile, her poorly-behaved kids were running around the restaurant causing havoc. Having someone telling you something you should be doing as a parent rather than minding their own business is sometimes a fact of life about being a parent.

Unfortunately, we (society) have done this to ourselves. On Long Island, there is at least one fatal accident a week involving a teenager driving at excessive speeds. Personally, I place a large part of blame on the parents. Many of these teenagers think aggressive driving is okay, because they have spent years riding in a car with a parent that speeds, cuts in and out of lanes, runs lights, etc. I think many parents also don't want to feel that they are limiting their teenager's freedoms in any way, so they don't set ground rules regarding the privilege of driving. Reckless driving is an issue regardless of age, but the teens are usually the ones that are highlighted as being the problem. I wish parents would go back to the days of buying their children POS cars that barely make it above 60, that way they can learn how to really drive (driver's ed cannot give a person all the experience they truly need) before they move on to another car.

Its a specific key that comes with the car. You let the kid use that key the main key does not use the setting I assume. It would be a good way to start kids out driving then let them use dads key when they show responsible habits I suppose.

i totally agree with you but this would be like you getting a ticket for not wearing your seat belt. if you let the kid drive without the safety feature on, you would be putting others and the kid at risk.
again, i think it is bullshit but i am just seeing it from the "asshats" POV. things like that get passed "for our own good".

well, google is my friend http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/007890.html
it seems it really is a key that is programmable by the parent and they can even adjust certain settings to warn the kid when it exceeds a certain speed....
the seat belt thing says that it only disables music in the car all together... so no seat belt = no music... not a bad learning tool... who drives a car without music these days ;)

I think we've turned into a ridiculous nanny state (then again, I always try to get my nephew to do supervised danger and while his parents don't mind, my parents freak), but I'm actually for this. It would be actual parenting involved in setting this up and taking some interest in what your child is doing.

AHHHH BULLSHIT....
my first car was a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS with a replica of our racecar engine in it. Pumped about 450HP and would scoot. I never had any problems with driving cause of how I was raised.
this is just stupid, its another way the man is keeping tabs on the American public. Its the parents responsibility to keep the kids driving safe....put a conscience in them and they will not go out and drive stupidly. The thought of me being caught for driving dumb terrified me so much that I would not hot dog around with my friends.....just when I was by myself.

how is it the man keeping tabs? it does involve parenting indeed, and as a parent you cannot always be there in the car with them for their first 3 years of driving. The best, most well behaved kid does stupid things when not being supervised by their parents... and frankly these stupid things happen mostly in their teens. That doesn't mean all stupid things happen in a car, but driving one is not an easy skill and probably one that can put others (and themselves) in danger faster and with a bigger magnitude.
