‘Partridge Family’ gets a TV remake
What’s with all the remakes of old shows like 90210, Knight Rider and Bionic Woman? Are viewers naturally nostalgic for shows of the past, or is Hollywood just running out of ideas?
Variety reports that the latest TV artefact to get a revamp is The Partridge Family, the singingest family sitcom to come out of the ‘70s.
Geffen Records and Reveille are working with Sony Pictures TV, which owns the format rights to the original show, to create a new version of the series.
Although details of the remake are scanty, insiders say it will be a modern tongue-in-cheek approach.
“We’re not going to be caught up in nostalgia,” Geffen chairman Ron Fair told Variety. “The original was a great touchstone — our goal is to use it and spring forward from it.”
The idea for a Partridge Family update came from a desire to create a family show rooted in the music business. Although with several musical family shows already featured on the air – including tween series Hannah Montana and reality shows Gene Simmons Family Jewels and Run’s House – the project will have to carve out a distinct niche.
The Partridge Family aired from 1970-74 on ABC and starred Shirley Jones as a widowed mother who started a band with her five children. The series launched the careers of David Cassidy, Danny Bonaduce and Susan Dey.
Two other Partridge projects have hit TV – ABC’s Saturday morning cartoon The Partridge Family 2200 AD (1974) and VH1’s reality show In Search of the Partridge Family (2004).
The latter show was used to cast a pilot of The New Partridge Family, but networks never pursued a series.
