Is this a Philly thing? I never heard it before. Am I just not one of the cool kids? What do it mean?

Thirteen-eighty is the street number for Ron's childhood home. He's saying he feels like a giddy schoolboy.

its so weird that you brought this up, about two hours ago i was thinking about ronnie saying this and i cant wrap my head around it. does he mean $1.380? a dollar and thirty-eight cents and just making sure theres no fractions of pennies thrown in? im also confused.

i actually gave it alot of thought recently. I wanted to start a thread "what can you buy for a buck three eighty" to see how bad it really is, but then i realized i'm not sure what " a buck three eighty" is. in my head i saw it as $1.38, like you're saying $1.38y. OR it could be like "how much money do you have?" "i got a buck and $3.80 worth of change' which means that you have $4.80. OR a buck could be representative of $1,000bucks and you feel like $1,380 which isn't bad, but nowhere like feeling like a million bucks

i don't know..so many possiblities

I'd say that probably very few people here know what it means and I'd venture to guess that no one on the show has much of a clue either, which makes it all the more amazing that no one has ever questioned him on it. The Emporer truely has no clothes, my friends.

Everytime Ron uses the expression, it reminds me of this song. Haven't heard it since summer camp in 1980, but the buck three eighty line has stayed with me:

Blackout, heatwave, .44 caliber homicide
The bums drop dead and dogs go mad
In packs on the West Side
Young girl standing on a ledge looks like another suicide
She wants to hit those bricks
'Cause the news at six gotta stick to a deadline
While the millionaires hide in Beekman Place
The bag ladies throw their bones in my face
I get attacked by a kid with stereo sound
I don't want to hear it but he won't turn it down
Life is tough but it's just enough
To hold back the tears until it's closing time
I survived, I'm still alive
But I'm getting close to the borderline
Close to the borderline

A buck three eighty
Won't buy you much lately on the street these days
And when you can get gas
You know you can't drive fast anymore on the parkways
Rich man, poor man, either way American
Shoved into the lost and found
The no nuke yell we're gonna all go to hell
With the next big meltdown
I got remote control and a color T.V.
I don't change channels so they must change me
I got real close friends that will get me high
They don't know how to talk and they ain't gonna try
I shouldn't bitch, I shouldn't cry
I'd start a revolution but I don't have time
I don't know why I'm still a nice guy
But I'm getting close to the borderline
Close to the borderline

I thought I'd sacrifice so many things
I thought I'd throw them all away
I didn't think I needed anything
But you can't afford to squander what you're not prepared to pay

I need a doctor for my pressure pills
I need a lawyer for my medical bills
I need a banker to finance my home
I need security to back my loan
It isn't new what I'm going through
But everybody knows you got to break sometime
Another night I fought the good fight
But I'm getting closer to the borderline
Closer to the borderline.

A buck three eighty is a term used to express how you are so broke you can't even purchase busfare.

I got the gist of the meaning from the way Ron uses it. But that still does not explain to me what "a buck three eighty" refers to.

I don't want to get in the middle of it.
But if you google 'a buck three eighty' you get the idea of what it means... and that it actually means nothing.

Goddammit, it's driving me crazy! I did Google it and there doesn't seem to be any agreement on what it means. But it HAS to come from somewhere. There has to be some meaning behind it, however stupid.

PapaBear
10-01-2008, 09:22 PM
To be honest, in the past, he had used different amounts. I think he said a buck 380 once, and he just liked the way it sounded. No meaning at all.

I'm with DonInNC here; Ron's always quoting songs from my past, so I just attributed it to that Billy Joel song.
It's the only other time Ive ever heard anyone say it.

No - but it IS a saying. It's not something Ron just pulled out of his ass. There are several references to it if you Google it. But no one seems to agree on what it actually means or comes from. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

yup, and the last time I checked, the origin of the phrase "Ham & Egger" was pretty obscure even though everyone can agree on the meaning of it. (The origin that made the most sense had to do with amateur boxing matches somewhere in north eastern PA, the winner got prize money, the loser got some ham & eggs)

PapaBear
10-01-2008, 09:33 PM
I didn't realize that. I just googled it, too. Most of the responses lean towards it being nonsensical. Since Ron is often frustrated with what's going on with the show (nonsense), maybe he's expressing his frustration with the phrase.

My dad has always used it as a "mind your own business" thing for money. Until Ron used it, I had never heard anyone else say it.

I never knew my dad was so cool.

I like this answer the best...

No, a buck three eighty is NOT three dollars and eighty cents. It's a humorous, non-sensical amount. A buck is a dollar. A buck eighty is a dollar and eighty cents. Three eighty is three dollars and eighty cents. A buck three eighty is an intentional splice error which isn't a particular amount but a jumbling of different, mutually exclusive amounts. It's supposed to be a joke. It's often used to mean a trivial amount, like:

"here's my buck three eighty's worth..." instead of "... two cents worth...",

or "I guess I could flip burgers for a buck three eighty an hour",

or maybe "I really earned my buck three eighty today" meaning "I worked eally hard and definitely earned my measly, insufficient paycheck".

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the origin of the expression is .

This is what I'll go with...

Maybe it's a PA thing - they're weird with numbers. When I was in Scranton - there was a guy we'd make fun of ordering hot dogs - used to say "gimme a couple - two/tree dogs, one with kraut one with not"

Haha. That's funny in my head b/c I remember saying it with the accent at parties. When I was young and life was worth it.

Shit.

I always associated it with "Close To The Borderline" from Billy Joel's GLASS HOUSES too.
I assumed Ron was making a reference to that song.... as he is always making references to songs, yet not always mentioning the origin of the reference.

Like when he was discussing books about killing, Ron said "... reading murder books and tryin' to stay hip"

Ron may have heard rock /pop music on this AM station when he grew up.It reached his area in Chester PA on a good day most likely.People he knew then might have listened to 1380 AM before FM in Wilmington. The seventies changed all that with FM radio and FIDELITY.:smoke:

Recyclerz

I think the Billy Joel reference probably makes the most sense but another alternative, since Ron was a white working-class suburban juvenile deliquent back in the 1970's, could be this blast from the past

A buck three eighty is a nonsensical amount that's used to describe the price of something or the amount of something, that's relatively inexpensive or worth little.. People usually use the phrase when they either don't know or don't want to disclose the actual dollar amount..

There's quite a few people on this board I'd like play Trivial Pursuit with pinks..
