Okay, I know what year it is, but we don't have Tivo or DVR here yet, so my sister recently gave me her old VCR so I can tape shows when I'm at work. I programed what time and channel and all that, so I think my question is when I leave today should I leave the cable on, the VCR off, or should I put the VCR on cause it won't turn itself on. Thanks buddays.

You should definitely have the cable on. As for the VCR, it may vary by model. I remember when I used to program our old VCR, the VCR had to be off or it wouldn't start recording at the scheduled time. If I were you, I would see if there is a manual online for your model.

Turn the vcr on, program it and then don't touch it. Leave the cable box on the channel you want to record and the cable box itself on.

As I recall, I had to leave the cable on, as well as have it tuned to the channel I wanted it to record. The vcr will turn itself on, I think.

Cable on, TV off, VCR timer record. My VCR has to be Off for the timer to work.

you prbably need to have the vcr on channel 3 since the cable box is controlling the channel signals

With my cable box, I can tell it to set a VCR timer for whatever show it is I want to record. I can then turn the box off. When the show comes on, the box comes on tuned into the channel that I want to record. I can set it up to have timers for multiple channels at different time. For instance, if there is a show on NBC at 8, on on ABC at 9, and one on CBS at 10, I set timers for all 3, then set the VCR to record from 8-11.

In addition to allowing me to record several different channels it's better than leaving the box on, in case of a brief power outage. If the power flickers, without the timers set, the box will be off when the power comes back on. But if the timers are set, the box will turn itself back on.
