Except for the Dead, I agree with all of those.

I'd have to add the Replacements appearance in '85 (big surprise), and also Neil Young's raucous '89 performance.

I have squillions of fave musical moments from that show but one really stands out for me.

BLIND MELON performing "No Rain".
I don't care much for the song... or the band but, they really nailed it. It didn't feel like broadcast TV to me. It felt like a concert. The band was on fire and the crowd was totally into it. The applause at the end didn't feel "polite" but rather... hard earned.

<div><embed src="http://www.livevideo.com/flvplayer/embed/40477102289D4393BA597DA5D709E718" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" quality="high" WIDTH="445" HEIGHT="369" wmode="transparent"></embed><br/><a href="http://www.livevideo.com/video/embedLink/40477102289D4393BA597DA5D709E718/323017/blind-melon-no-rain-live-on.aspx">Blind Melon - No rain (Live on SNL)</a></div>

The other is ELVIS COSTELLO performing "Veronica" with his band AND members of the SNL houseband. He fuckin' nailed it. Everybody was so into it. I think it's the most energetic musical performance the show had ever seen.
Good luck finding it online though. (it's on the SNL-music box set, however)

I'm pretty sure this happened on SNL, although I haven't seen it since it aired, but it was LL Cool J performing and his DJ was on a very tall set that was shaped like a ghetto blaster.

I need to look that up cause it's a favorite memory of mine seeing that performance.

The Band doing Life is a Carnival on the same night that Belushi cut Buck Henry's forehead with a samurai sword. It used to be on YouTube, but it's gone now. I'm glad I downloaded it when I did!

You guys are missing the most famous musical guest ever...Sinead O'Connor. She taught us all to "fight the real enemy." It was the Pope I guess? Other than that I loved when Robbie Robertson did The Weight with Hornsby and some Indian Chief (1992). I cant find a clip but it was awesome.

The first time I ever heard Fishbone, they were in studio at a listener supported radio station in Charlottesville, Va. They tied up the radio host and demanded that only lesbians with big boobs call in.

I'd have to add the Replacements appearance in '85 (big surprise)

I had seen them in a crappy club in my crappy little town a couple of weeks before that.

I was in my dorm room alone, watching them on my little b+w TV.

I found it.

In 1976, Cocker performed this on Saturday Night Live. John Belushi joined him on stage doing his famous impersonation of Cocker's spastic stage movements. Cocker didn't know Belushi was going to come on stage, but wondered what was going on when John asked him before the show what he would be wearing on stage.

After watching this again, it seems planned. Nevertheless still a great bit.

Of the muscial guests who have appeared in the last 10 or so years that have been incredible, U2's performance has to be the tops.

Remember when they were on some awful show called The World Music Awards playing Talent Show? I had taped it, and probably watched it 15 times in the following week. One day I came home, and discovered my mother had taped a soap opera over it! I was furious (obviously), especially when she said she thought I was done with it. Ugh!

I couldn't find a clip of it on youtube, but I remember seeing Captain Beefheart on SNL sometime in the early 80s (probably aroundd the time of Dock At The Radar Station?) & being really weirded out by it. Not the best era of the Captain, but it left an impression.

My favorite SNL music memory was back in 1998 when Puff Daddy (at the time) performed "Come With Me".

I was 18.... I had sex with my girlfriend for the first time that night.

Good times. Good times.

I've fucked so many times through so many bad SNL's its not even funny.

It's one of those shows that you get bored with and just start making out.

Good times indeed.

It's not exactly a true SNL moment but, as you know... my love for this show knows no bounds.
On the SNL retrospective special that aired in 1998(?), Al Green closed the show with "Let's Stay Together".
His voice was in fine form and he performed in the middle of the studio. Not the usual area on the stageright ("Grand Central Station") corner. The entire audience was made up of various alumni and currents but, none of them were too cool to clap along & sing. It just felt good.
It ended with Dan Aykroyd inviting ALL members of the cast & crew to come up, cram together and pose for one huge "class picture".
Click.
History.

Loved it.

I think that was the 25th anniversary special in 1999.
