View Full Version : What is your dream SNL cast?

So, SNL sucks balls these days...this is the first election season in my lifetime I can think of where they have completely dropped the ball and have ZERO heat going with their political humor. None. Nobody gives a shit about their election sketches or characters outside of Fey playing Palin, who is basically an SNL character herself. In the spirit of these sad times, I got into a discussion with some friends over who we would pick as our perfect SNL casts. Here are the rules:
You can pick up to 8 cast members.
They have to have been regular cast members. No hosts or repeat "special guests."
You need to include at least one woman.
Here are mine:
Phil Hartman - the dude is the Glue. He can do anything: broad, precise, impressions, political, satire...he's the rock you can build any sketch around.
Will Ferrell - say what you will about his post-SNL work, the man killed consistently on the show for years in sketch after sketch. Basically a more absurdist Phil Hartman, he could also play aperfect straight man to any insanity around him.
Eddie Murphy - it's sad that the old SNL episodes aren't shown on TV that much, if at all, these days, because I think we all need to be reminded of how amazingly funny Eddie was before he went insane with douchebggery. He also singlehandedly saved the show from being cancelled. Beylond that, he "controled" the show like no other...when he was on stage, he basically had total commad of the audience. Maybe the best all-star the show ever had.
Bill Murray - so very drrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy one second and then so nuts the next. Young Bill or old, it doesn't matter.
Rachel Dratch - the comedy sexist in me can't stand almost all the women in SNL's history, but I think Dratch is hysterical.
Chris Farley - I debated between having him or Belushi on as the funny fat guy, but I think Farley ultimately fits the format of the skecth show much better. Belushi struck me as a better comedic actor as opposed to a sketch comedy performer...he did much more with his silent asides in films in terms of making me laugh than anything he did on SNL. Farley, on the other hand, was just a force of nature. He was going to make you laugh if it was the last thing he'd do, and he put every inch and ounce of himself into it. He was made for insane skecth comedy.
Gilda Radner - love Gilda. There's something so enjoyable about watching her...it's hard to describe what it is. It just seems right.
Jon Lovitz - Loviz fuckin slays me. He's abrilliant smartass, but it's better that he's a shlubby, gross smartass. It's much more fun that way. He can do deadpan absurdity better than almost anyone.
I kinda look at my ground as a weird family...Gilda and Phil are the parents, Will, Bill and Jon are the wacky uncles, Rachel and Chris are the goofy kids and Eddie is the sassy friend from around the neighborhood.
Who would you all pick for your casts?

Love Norm...the only reason I left him off is because he aways talked about how he fucking hated the sketches and really only wanted to do the news. Too bad, too, because you look at the few impressions he did...Letterman, Tarantino, Dole, Burt Reynolds...and they all fucking slayed without fail. In the end, however, I had to leave him off because he ultimately didn't want to do anything but Update. My dream cast WANTS to do the sketches, goddammit.

now if a castmember portrayed potential after they left the show that they didn't portray on the show, can we add them to our dream cast being that the funniness we know they have would now benefit the show better?
For example, Chris Rock and Jay Mohr weren't SNL superstars when they were on. But since they left, they have proved themselves to be Comic Genius and if they were to return it would be amazing. Are we judging Post-SNL Rock/Mohr or SNL-era Rock/Mohr?

Personally, I wouldn't pick either. Rock is amazing, but he's a pretty shitty actor. I don't think his comedy really elnds itself to skteches. Same with Mohr, though he is a good actor. Funny comedian, bt just doesn't seem suited to sketch comedy outside of the impressions.

McKean did suck on SNL. I totally did not expect him, Chris Elloiot and Janeane Garofalo (fuck you all, at the time she had killed on The Ben Stiller Show and Larry Sanders) to all be so miserable and horrile that year they were on.

if Mohr's impressions where tended to correctly..he could be a great skit actor. And Rock is such a stand up genius in his post-SNL career that i can't imagine him not being on a whole other level if he was on SNL today (and he has given interviews where he admitted he wasn't working at his full potential during his SNL time)

True, but he just can't act. At all. Outside of sketches like Nat X where it was just him doing almost all of the talking, he stunk. Unless he did nothing but monologues, I don't see Rock knocking it out as a sketch actor.
Mohr just strikes me as "too" Jay Mohr...I like him as an actor, but he's always "playing" Jay Mohr. Even when he does impressions, he's still Jay Mohr. The guy's got an ego...not a slam on him, but it doesn't seem like he's willing to "lose himself" to any degree in a role.

Yeah, read the book, too. That year was a mess for the show, but she didn't make it any easier on herself or anyone else by constantly crying to the hosts and the press about how much it sucked while she was still on it. By her own admission she didn't want to be there after the first week, and she essentially just gave up and made things as difficult as possible.
I was surprised to find out what a prick Chris Elliot was during that year, too. Given his amazing run with Letterman, I figured he would have been into the writing part of SNL, but he had zero desire to do that when he was made part of the cast. He was fully expecting to just come in and do the jokes someone else wrote and that's it.

I do not get the Kristen Wiig hype at all. Everything I've seen from her, including the much vaunted and God-awful "Surprise Party" seems straight out of MadTV. I was actually convinced that she had been on MadTV, but it turns out that was a different tall, unfunny brunette named Mo Collins doing the same wacky voice, bug-eyes schtick a few years ago.
My eight:
1. Eddie Murphy. SNL needs a star and Eddie definitely fills that role. When he was on SNL the man was a giant.
2. John Belushi. I need a funny big man and as much I find Farley to be likable, I've always thought that Belushi was the best. His face had the ability to tell a story.
3. Phil Hartman. Not only was Phil a comedic genius, he also was a great utility player. Best glue guy ever.
4. Tina Fey. I need a strong female that can do sketches and the news. I've always thought that snark from the desk is best done by a female and Fey did that. Although Jane Curtin was good there too.
5. Mike Myers. Every great cast needs a "lovable player" and Mike definitely filled that role. Ohh, he was damned funny too.
6. Dana Carvey. A very versatile player that was not only damned funny but could do the impressions that topical skits need.
7. Jan Hooks. I need some more balance in terms of gender than just 1 female and this pick was actually pretty hard. Gilda, Amy Poehler, Victoria Jackson and Nora Dunn would have been great too for different reasons...but Hooks was a really great member of the cast and could play a strong or weak character well.
8. Bill Murray. I must admit that Bill always cracks me up and could actually play a variety of roles...including the slimier characters well.

It probably makes sense to pick them as they were when they were on SNL, so no post-Austin Powers Mike Meyers or anything like that. This is based on how good they were on SNL.
My big what-if is Robert Downey, jr.: not terribly good the year he was a cast member...but then again, he's RDJ.

DRATCH: She's quirky, funny, fearless and... most importantly, she's prepared. She very rarely stares at the cue cards.
FERRELL: He's funny as hell but also reeeally strong as the "straight man". He was perfect for that show.
FARLEY: I miss that fat fuck. He was dependbly funny and also kinda vulnerable.
MURPHY: Funny is funny. And he's funny.
MYERS: Great at characters and also the physical stuff.
SAMBERG: I love his stuff. I love what he writes and I love what he brings to the sketches that others have written. And, the digital shorts are brilliant. "I Ran" is the greatest pre-produced thing that SNL has ever done. Easily.
SANDLER: He really did his own thang on that show. Great energy.
WIIG: My absolute favorite female cast member in this history of the show. I think she's the closest thing we'll ever have to a female Hartman.
----
HONORABLE MENTION:
SUDEKIS: I think he's the best ACTOR the show has ever had. Of all the comics that have ever been on SNL, I truly think he's the only one that could be a truly respected movie star. In the future, he'll be on that Tom Hanks level of success & respect. He's not quite "slummin' it" on SNL but... he's definitely above it. He should be acting. I think he's a true talent.

I grew up watching alot of SNL in the 80's and early 90's so that cast is the one I identify with the most. I've watched all the stuff before that and realize that that cast was the strongest. I weighed including Belushi, but in the end I thought he was a much better comedic actor than sketch performer. If the show was nothing but those short films starring him, great, but for the most part his work on the live show is mostly a scattershot mess. Sure, he's got his great moments that stand out, but for me, to take his run as a whole, there's a LOT more clunkers weighing it all down.

In your opinion, am i still too, "Jay Mohr"?

You said this about me. You weren't lost, you were just surprised at my tenacity. face.

Anthony Michael Hall All-Stars:

Jim Belushi (sad, but the dude has worked)
Lovitz

Stiller (honorable mention - dude became a bigtime movie star without Lorne's help)

I was debating them being in there or not. I think all four of them should be on there, but the Anthony Michael Hall all-stars for for more TV success than movie success. They "work", but they aren't A++++ list like Farrell, Mike Myers, etc. (compartively speaking to the rest of the SNL cast)
Downey shouldn't be on there, Quaid should, Wayans should - Cusack only gets work when her brother does.

Garrett Morris - Chico Escuela - President of the New York School for the Hard of Hearing
Janeane - wasn't on long enough to count
Victoria - with the exception of her SNL appearances, was never great but she was always good enough for Toonces to drive over a cliff.
Chris Kattan - so very annoying, but still had some really strong moments where you'd laugh despite yourself
Ellen Cleghorne - she's no Danitra Vance, but I love Ellen
Jay Mohr - who?

with great hindsight, MY ultimate cast:
Jay Mohr
Colin Quinn
Tracy Morgan
Tina Fey
Amy Poehler
Norm MacDonald
Jon Belushi
Gilda Radner
Joe Piscopo
Jon Lovitz
Phil Hartman
Chris Farley
Michael McKean
Maya Rudolph
Andy Samberg
Jason Sudeikis
Jan Hooks
Jim Breuer
that's it, it's long and i don't care damn it. it's my cast.
worst cast:
jane curtain
al franken
billy crystal
denny dillion (specifically because i have never seen her in one sketch, but is always on E! or VH1 for talking about the greatest moments in SNL history; she is in NONE of them)
nora dunn
mike myers
Tim Meadows
Janeane Garofalo
Jimmy Fallon
most of the cast from 2001 on
Can you all please stop kissing Jay's ass merely because he posts here?

NICE!
Darryl Hammond. Not funny. Impressions are weak, diluted, and inconsistent. F that guy.
Jeanenenen Garararafololo. Bad fit.
Jeff Richards. "Drunk Girl". Big deal. Come up with some new material, college boy.
Colin Quinn. Brought NOTHING to the table. And he does far far too many "savers" after his crappy jokes during WU die on the vine. Which is every f'ing joke BTW.
Ya know what? This is too much work.

On paper, that's arguably one of the best casts. Whoops....
Melanie Hutsell is my personal least favorite. Everything she did involved her doing some variation of a really bad Valley Girl character and flashin her gigantic teeth and rolling her eyes.
I'm a admitted comedy sexist, so along those lines most of the women who have been on the show drive me bonkers with their unfunniness. I'm baffled by the love for the obnoxious, braying, one-note Kirstin Wiig. Out of the original cast, I think Lorraine Newman and Jane Curtain are all but useless.

I admit that Wiig (and to a lesser extent, Oteri) are one trick ponies BUT... that trick has a value.
I usually rant about how Jack Nicholson is a horrrible actor because he is always always always that same calm, playboy, psychopath with a hint of a sense of humor. Always.
And then somebody pointed out to me "you're right but, when ya need one of those kinda characters... Jack's the man for the job". And, he was right.
Wiig is the same nervous, talky, quirky, hyperactive chick in 90 percent of her skits but, that's what those skits are about. They call for that... and she delivers. It's not like she's shoehorning that nervous character energy into other skits (like, say.... Jimmy Fallon would). She's writing skits -perhaps too many- that are actually about these highstrung characters.

That cliche about Nicholson is applicable to most of his films over the last 25 years, but the guy definitely bucked that in a lot of roles over the years.
