View Full Version : Best current "Character Actor"

Who do you think is the best "character actor" of current films
You can't choose any character actor that has since become a lead actor (like Philip Seymour Hoffman). A "character actor" is an actor who always has a bit part (never the lead) and is always solid
To me, the best current character actor has to be J.K. Simmons
http://images.zap2it.com/20040625/j.k.simmons_spiderman2pr_240.jpg
i saw "Burn After Reading" but the projector failed before his scenes. I saw the rest of it today and he just rules. Everything he does he is better than the material. In "Juno" he was definitely the best thing. No one can say that any movie isn't made better when J.K. Simmons shows up

"Burn After Reading" is great! I went to see it opening weekend and the projector fucked up right after the important scene where Brad Pitt was in the closet (yeah pretty important scene). I saw the rest today. I loved the first half even more the second time i saw it (and the rest of the movie couldnt have delivered more)
To me, the funniest thing in the world is to make a CIA/Paranoia genre film about a couple of zeroes. thats genius. Before the film began their was the trailer for that Ridley Scott movie "Body of Lies"...Burn After Reading totally FACEs all of those types of films. Every actor is perfect (John Malkovich, brad pitt, clooney, Frances McDormand.great performances all around) and its going to be a movie to watch over and over again

Coen brothers always use character actors better than anyone else. I think John Turturro and Steve Buscemi have elevated to lead actor status thanks to their work with them

Yeah, pretty much. Miller's Crossing is one of the ultimate character actor flicks. Here's other guys they used to great effect who always knocks it out:
Dan Hedaya & M. Emmet Walsh:

Tom Wilkinson and Ian McShane (although he is entirely underappreciated and underutilized) would have to be up there. James Earl Jones has had some impressive turns as a character actor. In keeping with the Coen Bros. discussion, Frances McDormand would have to be mentioned.

Frances McDormand is almost always a lead actress or a supporting actress..i really don't see much "character actress" from her. Tom Wilkinson is great too, but i think hes a supporting actor (and i've seen him lead) more than a character actor

Even pulling the Harry Potter movies out of the mix, Alan Rickman has been in 17 movies in the last 10 years alone; add in Hitchhiker's Guide (where he does a voice) and it's 18; with the Potter movies include it is 23.
That's a lot of current work.

Shame on all of us forgetting Wallace Shawn.
http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2007/08/03/wallace-shawn-beanstalk.jpg
Wallace Shawn on ‘Gossip Girl’? It’s Not Inconceivable (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/17/arts/television/17shaw.html?_r=1)
That protean quality has served Mr. Shawn well in a 30-year career that is rampant with contradiction. To some audiences he is best known as the author of acerbic, polarizing plays like “Marie and Bruce” and “Aunt Dan and Lemon,” or as a screenwriter and star of the Louis Malle film “My Dinner With Andre,” a feature-length conversation between Mr. Shawn and his longtime collaborator, the director Andre Gregory.
Other viewers recognize him from the pop side of the cultural spectrum, for the supporting parts he has played in the high school comedy “Clueless” or the adventure movie “The Princess Bride.” (Because of his character in that film, an arrogant kidnapper named Vizzini, some fans forever associate him with the catchphrase “Inconceivable!”)

I found with The Departed that I liked some of the minor characters much more than the major ones. I liked Ray Winstone as Frenchy much better than Jack Nicholson's completely unhinged Costello, for example.
And let's not get into the abortion that was Matt Damon's character (I couldn't figure out how no one saw this guy is a bullshit artist within 10 seconds), or Mark Wahlberg's (yes, i know cops are supposed to be "tough", but this douche would be bounced off any force immediately)...and we will not speak of Martin Sheen's incredibly fake BAHHHHHSTUN accent ("You're not a CAAAAAAAAAAAWP")
Maybe Scorsese's worst movie, overall.
I've seen enough of Michael Cera to know that he's going to be a character actor for the rest of his career.
That said, his schtick is pretty good.

Jack Nicholson was the weakest part of the movie. Shame on you for the rest of your post.

I had to do a little searching for this guy. My friends and I just call him "HookFace" usually.

Great in Sin City, Gladiator, Smokin' Aces, and it looks like the new season of 24. He always nails his roles.

I got a few:
Adam Scott-He's had small roles in Knocked Up, The Great Buck Howard, Step Brothers, and in the final episode of Eastbound and Down. I think he's great.

Dean Winters-A ton of TV like Oz, Rescue Me, 30 Rock. I wish he had more substantial movie roles.

Stephen Graham-One of my favorite actors. Snatch, Band of Brothers, Gangs of New York, This Is England. He'll be in Public Enemies later this year.

Kevin Corrigan-I don't know how much I like this guy but he's got an incredible career. He was in Goodfellas, True Romance and the Departed. That's just sick. Also Superbad, Pineapple Express and a role on Damages.

I don't have Starz, but it looks like the whole shows are posted on youtube (albeit censored). Have to check it out.
As far as women go, you gotta love Lin Shaye

She's primarily Queen of Farrelly Bros. movies.
That shit with her in Kingpin, when Woody Harrelson had to fuck her, will sketched in my brain forever. She was brilliant as Magda in Something About Mary, also.
I've seen her play mean teachers and shit in other movies, and you can't forget the religous mom in Detroit Rock City.
