There are plenty, you just have to work a little harder to find them sometimes.

The well known cats:

Talib Kweli
Common
MF Doom
The Roots

Some that have gotten some pub:

Lupe Fiasco
Dilated Peoples
Pharoah Monch (his newest album was great)

Some of my lesser known favorites:

Little Brother
Murs
Jedi Mind Tricks
J-Live

Defunct:

Jurassic 5

I can post a bunch more when I get home and have access to itunes.

And as much as I didnt want to like him, i am starting to dig Lil Wayne. I have no explination for it.

Hip Hop is dead because of all of the ring tone rappers out there that cater to the rich white kids to get their stuff on the air

Call me a fuddy duddy but hip hop/rap now sucks because of this there are a few people out there that are ok.

And Hip-Hop died when Master P became popular in about 1999 since then very few things have been put out that i will listen to

But i love my old school from between 92 and 99 - Redman, Keith Murray, Outkast, Wu, Biggie, Pac, Lost Boyz, pharoah monch, fugees, jeru, gangstarr, brand Nubian

I want to punch T-Pain in his neck

Oh aggie im sure here is one that i know you love (and you are my favorite btw)

Cam'ron and this song:

Hey ma, what's up, lets slide, all right, all right
And we get it on tonight
You smoke, I smoke, I drink, me too, well good
Cause we gon get high tonight
Got drops, got Coups, got Trucks, got jeeps, all right
Cause we gon take a ride tonight
So ma, what's up, let's slide, all right, all right
And we gon get it on tonight

[Juelz Santana]
Yo, Now I was downtown clubbin', ladies night
Seen shorty she was crazy right
And I approach baby like
Ma, What's your age and type?
She looked at me and said use a baby right
I told her, I'm 18 and live a crazy life
Plus I'll tell you what the 80's like
And I know what ladies like
Need a man that's polite, listens and takes advice
I could be all three, plus I can lay the pipe
Come with me come stay the night
She looked at me laughin', like boy your game is tight
I'm laughin' back like show you right
Get in the Car
And don't touch nothing Sit in the car
Let discuss Somethin'
Either we lovin' or I'll see you tommorow
Now we speeding up the Westside
Hand creepin' up her left side, I'm ready to do it
Ready to bone, ready for dome
55th exit, damn, damn, already we home
Now let's get it on

And i also forgot - Boot camp click (fab five, ogc, black moon, smif-n-wessun and the rest), Tribe, Busta Rhymes, Cypress Hill, black Rob, Getto Boys, camp lo

this tread pops up every 6 months, the reason people keep asking it is because people think that pop music is rap, when a vj calls something rap or hiphop it doesn't mean it is.

I have seen Brand Nubian, Big Daddy Kane, Special Ed and Kool G Rap all perform with the Roots. Saying all the old school rappers HATE everything from today is a total exaggeration.

If 10 years is old school, I must be really old. Lets go back to at least 88-92 to consider anything old school.

As I said earlier, there's plenty of good rap. Just because it's not on the radio or tv doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Your ringtone obsession is fascinating. I don't think Brother Ali has ever had a ringtone.

I have heard interviews with Redman, Method Man, Big Boi and many others who hate what the rap game has become and how diluted it is

I guess for every individual that thinks its ok, there are those on the other side who hate what it is now

Its like they said in the Wire: "The Game done changed"

and 10 years isnt old school, but 10 years ago is when i think it all started going downhill with like i said the release of the Master P and all his group of morons those clowns put out a new CD every week it seemed and diluted everything.

And i know there are groups that put out good stuff like the Roots (who i saw before they got big in Philly in 94) and outkast.

And most underground stuff is that way for a reason its because most of those guys suck and couldnt put out more then a song or two thats why guys like DJ Green Lantern, Clinton Sparks and the rest put out the mixtapes on teh underground because they only need one song from each person

Dude's been on a fierce slide since "NaS is Like." That single was amazing and then the album sucked and it's all been downhill from there.

More DJ Premier production, please.

I think the last album was his best since the first. Keeping in mind his first album is a classis is everyone's mind, probably top 5 or 10 is rap history.

I know you're a hard man to please, Mojo. I think I hold Nas in higher regard than most because I feel lyrics and flow are more important than the beats (not that there important).

I don't know if Mobb Deep was mentioned but there you go.

I heard a Little Wayne song yesterday on my ride home from work, he'll always be one of the Hot Boys to me but the song was OK.

For me it all depends on my mood. If i want real rap i listen to Big Daddy Kane, E.B. & Rakim, KRS One. Aggressive rap Wu, Pac, Biggie, old school mainstream, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, If i want soulful i go for Nas, ATCQ, Pharcyde.

I don't like ringtone rap, i don't even consider it to actually be rap, just glorified showmanship but sometimes i want to listen to something that's just all around foolish.

I also like T.I. so ftw.

I am patiently waiting for the return of Chubb Rock.

I just saw him in a concert in Brooklyn with Special Ed. It was very exciting!!

A rapper named David Banner just got on my Radar because his new Album was political and was pretty good, but I have to say Hip hasnt been the same in a good 5 years for me.

His first was good then he just followed what everyone else was doing

the 2nd album sucked, then he abandoned his east coast roots to try and sound west coasty when that was big, then he was big on the Kristal and rolex's

He just seems so fake, i mean Oochie-Wallie it was big because it was ringtone rap that the masses ate up

Nas might be one of the most overrated out there and has skated by far to long on the success of his first album

However, he has had some good hits here and there, i mean anyone would when you have been around as long as he has

I disagree all rap is not hip hop

all hip hop would maybe be considered Rap

Like 50 Cent is rap not hip hop

Content does not differentiate between the two.

If 50 Cent and Mos Def both had songs over the same sample, why would one be rap and the other Hip Hop?

Bulletproof Wallets is definitely the weakest, but even that is like half awesome.

I'm pissed his cameo in Iron Man got cut.

The fact that he did some of his best work while working full time as a teacher is amazing to me. He puts on a really good live show as well.

So rap = hip-hop unless it's yuppie-catered "ringtone rap." Got that...

Hip-hop, on the other hand, is held in higher esteem and, while including rap, is not defined just by rap. Got that, too...

So, can I listen to a song and distinguish between a rap song or a hip-hop song, or is it a matter of context and the artist in question?

another cannibal ox album probably isn't happening, unfortunately. it's a real shame because the cold vein is probably my favorite hip hop album of all time. vast and vordul both put out solo albums recently, though.

el-p is working on new material. his last album, i'll sleep when you're dead, was great.

i haven't heard anything in awhile about the de la rocha stuff.

ZDLR must be a pain in the ass to work with. He had those guys, Trent Reznor AND DJ Shadow produce tracks for him in the years when Rage was defunct and only one song ever got released, "March of Death" produced by DJ Shadow, back in 2003.

I will take this as a good spot to again bring up the Techno Animal album The Brotherhood of the Bomb. You mix Techno Animal with the likes of Rubberroom, Vast Aire, Anti-pop, and all the others and it's guaranteed "Hip Hop" genius. That Ice album was also good.

I consider him a recording artist not a performing artist. I've seen him twice and the first time I blamed it on the levels but the next time he was outa breath and way off point.

He's here practically twice a year and I just won't bother seeing him anymore. If you're sayin that he must of improved since, I owe him another shot. The best part and all of the above are some of my favorite albums.

Like 50 Cent is rap not hip hop

I just call it rap. In the 90's when the Rick Dees and Casey Kasems of the world started calling R&B rap, rappers started insisting on calling it hip hop, then the Ryan Seacrests came along, heard that and started calling R&B hip-hop and they still do.

So to me when I hear rap I think rap. Fuck Hip-Hop, I don't care if it was the original name for it, saying it always sounded goofy to me. Hip-Hop in the beginning meant breakdancing and everything that goes with it. Whereas Rap was just beats and rhymes.

He is a chubby man, so maybe when you saw him he was out of shape or something. When I saw him at an Okayplayer winter festival type deal, he was definitely on point. Then he DJed and rapped at the same time and was better than the DJ he had backing him the rest of the set. I think it was for Braggin' Writes.

Dizzee is great. His 2nd album was a bit of a letdown, but his latest bounced right back. He's just so gonzo and has so much energy and the production is really creative. Roots is much more laid back, as I'm sure you know, but any of his other albums are worth seeking out. He's got a great flow and a cool dub-vibe.

Yeah, I really don't get the love for the Streets. His rhyming style is AWFUL. So childish and as basi as possible with paper-thin produciton that makes ringtone rap sound epic by comparison. I can only he guess he got the push because he's white and British. MIA gets a similar pass due to her being "exotic" but not terribly good. She's much better than the Streets, but I think she's MASSIVELY overrated.
