Indoctrination techniques you remember from when you were a kid

R&F talked about how weird the pledge of allegiance is on the show today, and how it is some weird form of 'getting them while they're young.'


It made me think back to this time when I was a Freshman in High School and we went to this anti-Alcohol assembly and how some creep in a bowtie would show pie charts of the amount of money spent by people on alcohol per year, and how if you never started drinking, and instead took the money you would spend on alcohol, and invest it properly, you could be a millionaire by the time you were 40.

(this was promptly followed by a nice slide-show of cars wrapped around telephone polls from drunk driving).


Needless to say, it didn't take...I'm typing this as I take a pull off a bottle of vodka right now.

Sunday School/Catholic school = guilt-ridden for life.

It wasn't until much later in life that I realized that on the playground in Catholic School in the Chicago Suburbs - Hello St. Mary's - we used to run around in our navy blue pants and powder blue shirts and ties playing "smear the queer".

And you know what we called it when one guy had the ball on the ground and we all jumped on top of him: yep, a nigger pile.

It's crazy, because we truly had no idea what we were talking about.

My 8th grade homeroom teacher, a Vietnam vet and thinly-veiled anarchist used to transition wildly from normal material into buddhist techniques for meditation, arguments for the existence of Native-American spirits in our forests, and jaw-clenching diatribes about "those fucking republicans". This is normal in Northern California public schools.
