I know there used to be a thread on here somewhere about this topic but I can't find it so I need help. Recently my computer died so I had to buy a new one, thus losing all of my music. Now I'm sitting here with a full iPod but an empty iTunes library. My question is this, how do I take the music from my iPod and upload it to my new iTunes? Please remember that I'm a computer dummy so I need very simple instructions on how to do this. This has happened to me twice in the past and both times I've clicked the wrong button when I plugged my iPod in to my new computer and lost everything. Please help, I can't live without my music.

if i were you i'd plug it in, don't update it to itunes, in fact don't even open itunes. Use one of the programs listed above, move music from ipod to computer. Then disconnect the ipod and reimport it to itunes.

SenutI works great on a Mac. There is something called TouchCopy for the PC, you "have" to pay for it though. Don't know about the free programs out there for it. I'm sure there are a bunch that do this sort of thing on the PC side.

how did your PC die ...? is it still possible to access your HDD, if so you can copy the folders to your new PC

you (or a more inclined friend) could connect the old HDD to your new PC, or your you can get the folders/files by using a HDD reader (http://usb.brando.com.hk/prod_detail.php?prod_id=00466) (cheaper model (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812264002))

I was wondering aboot this too. I was lucky enough to know beforehand that my computer was dying, so I backed up my music to cds. Problem is, one of the cds has some sort of error and can't be read, so I couldn't put that one onto my new computer. So, I have those songs from the bad cd on my ipod, but I don't know how to get them to my computer.

When I plug my ipod in, ITunes automatically opens and asks if you want to "sync" it with the new computer. Just say no, or cancel, or whatever, and you can charge it without losing any songs. But you can't put any new songs on either. I have a love/hate relationship with technology.

I used to use a program called YamiPod, but there are a bunch of free programs out there that download you iPod's music into a separate library. Once that is done, you simply add it to your iTunes library. It will probably tell you that you have to completely reformat your iPod still, but at least the library has the exact same songs.

It's tedious and time consuming, but its worth it.

Thanks! Isn't everything that worth something tedious and time consuming?

There are a bunch of programs out there go to download.com and search for iPod to computer transfer and a bunch of programs should come up. Some of them might be free or some you might have to pay for, but if you find one you have to pay for usually they offer a free trial so if you are only going to do it once things should work out for you.
