View Full Version : What should I do in Boston?

So what's there to do?
My chick and I were talking about how we didn't get a few days off at all this past summer and we're going a little stir crazy with the routine right now. She has a few days early November so I just put in for a few days and presto! we're on our way to Boston the weekend of 11/8.
Two things:
I don't drink.
I have a 7 month old that doesn't qualify for doggie daycare. Those sticklers. (so he's coming too)
Anyone have suggestions on what to do? :help:
( I know - don't say "I've got a hat on"... haha love that one.)

Dude, you've got to go and check out the bar from Cheers. Make sure you allot about 5-6 hours so you can take it all in. It's one of those once in a lifetime things that you can't ever pass up.
This was the advice that I got from a friend so I'm paying it forward.

Two bad you're not going the next weekend. You coulda saw Lil Jimmy perform but, you could see Carlos Mencia instead.

Take the duck tour (http://www.bostonducktours.com/about_main.html) (both land and water, SAME vehicle!) It's a pretty good way to see the city, AND theyre partners with my second suggestion:
Eat at Fire and Ice (http://www.fire-ice.com/locations/boston.html) !
It's a cool, relaxed, family friendly restaurant where you grab a bowl, put anything you choose from their selection of meat, veggies, fruit and sauces into it, and give it to them to grill up before your eyes! It's really a very cool place.

I'm going to put your suggestion on the tail end of the trip. That's one thing we won't have to argue about.
Anyone know anything about parking in the city? It looks like we're staying 20 minutes or so out of town. Can you take a baby on a subway? (I guess that last one's not a Boston question ...)

Naw, really I can't do that to you. I'm not sure if you're serious or not about going, but in case you are - don't waste your time. While the exterior looks just like the show the inside is a tiny, tiny little dive and a tourist trap where you'll feel compelled to buy a t-shirt or beer mug.

Parking sucks in Boston BIG TIME. If you pay you'll find a spot. Babies are free on the subway.

don't go on a saturday night!!!! that place is a zoo on the weekends.
eat lunch at cappy's or cappy's II if you go to the mfa (museum of fine arts). please eat a chicken cutlet sandwich then come back & tell me all about it so i can live vicariously through you.
people love the duck tours. i've never gone on one but i'd suggest it since you don't have anyone else there to take you around.
take a walk through boston common & faneiul hall & try to get some italian food in the north end.

Don't know how much you're going to spend but I've stayed here and enjoyed it. (http://www.ninezero.com/index.html)
It's within 50 yards of a classic Boston Irish pub, the birthplace of the Boston Cream Pie (http://www.omnihotels.com/findahotel/bostonparkerhouse/dining.aspx) and a historical graveyard where Sam Adams, Mother Goose, Crispus Attucks, John Hancock, Paul Revere (among others) are buried (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granary_Burying_Ground).

Here's a question.
Which would be a better place to visit for a couple of nights? Plymouth or Salem?
I've been to Plymouth but i was like 9 and i had fun but i am now 23 and this is a proposed trip for a 2 year anniversary.

Plymouth sucks. I grew up there and never understood why anyone would want to come there. There's like a rock and Plymouth Plantation. That's it.
As for hotels, I second the Nine Zero recommendation. Plus, they have a fucking phenomenal steak house (KO Prime) in the hotel.
15 is right around the corner from there, and it also a really nice hotel. They also have a great steakhouse there (Mooo).
What is your pricerange for a hotel?

I'd recommend Salem too... though I went in Oct. for the Halloween stuff. Nice town though - and I was wondering if they continued the witch hunt stuff into Nov... not sure. This is pretty much how that goes though. Overall the town was a lot of fun.

Oh - also ... Tall_James fancy hotel is pretty fancy but you'd get a better deal off expedia or somesuch site rather than booking off the hotel site... which, I guess, is probably common knowledge but I'm someone who doesn't go anywhere. Speaking of which...
Here's another thing I learned - priceline really let's you get a pretty good discount (if you're lucky) I've been telling everyone I can about how I was looking around where Fallon had suggested (not that I mention Fallon or .net or anything crazy like that ... they'd think I was nuts )- and I was going to go for some $200/night 2 star hotel but wound up on priceline and checked the median price in that area and halved it (b/c they say you can only do half off or something - I guess so you don't bid $5 ?) Anyway 1. they should say "name your own half price" first off 2. I didn't get the room in that area so they set you back up asking you to pick other options... and I'm careful at this point b/c you get charged instantly - no refund - if they find you something that matches your bid criteria... so I upped my price $5 and asked for something (3 whole stars) in Cambridge - presto! I saved $70 per night off a hotel right next to MIT (where I'm attending a seminar... martial arts - not academics) ... sweeetness! yay me. (and Will Shatner)

ok - so I made it up to Boston with the family. And I'm posting to let you know. And also that travelling with a 9 month old sucks.
My itinerary has officially gone in the shitter.
We saw Minuteman Historical Park - that was fun. I stood behind a rock.
Also we found a parking spot in Cambridge and ate at a "famous" burger joint with a bitchy cashier (who I entreated to "cheer up sweetie" in NJ fashion - fuck her)
And then now I'm stuck at my hotel posting from a public computer on the second floor like a mutt b/c I'm lame with my tech choices.
Tomorrow I meet my cousin. He lives here. He wants to go to a famous burger place in town. I'll wind up with poop burgers. We'll have to find something else.
I'll let you know how the rest of the weekend goes. (We're actually having a laht of fun!!)

That's what WE did!
That's probably the best thing to do there. NJ is pretty good with that sort of thing but it seems everything is spread out. You can see a bunch of same-era stuff but would have to go from Trenton to Princeton to New Brunswick and up toward north Jersey I suspect.
Boston had so much cool stuff with all your favorites from elementary school textbooks. Great town. Really great. The nice parts of town reminded me of nicer parts of Philly but nicer. With more stuff.
So here's a few of Bear acting as my garden gnome and me crouching next to him near Minute Man Park. Oh and another of me in the park behind a rock (apparently said rock served as cover for a colonial sniper Josiah something) because I'm a retard.
