Recent studies have shown that we can not get enough nutrition, and the optimal amounts of vitamin's and mineral's through regular eating and diet alone.
Who here takes supplements, and how do they work for you?

Most people don't eat a varied diet containing lots of fresh fruits and veggies, so I would agree, most of us aren't getting the nutrients we need. I take TONS of supplements (having worked in the health food industry for 11 years) but at the very least think it's really smart to take a *good* multi... high potency. You don't have to go nuts with a 6-a-day all in one multi that costs $60 a month. There are really good one-a-days that don't cost much but are still of really good quality. There's tons of evidence that shows that taking more than the recommended daily allowance of certain nutrients has positive effects.
Oh, and after years of trying tons of different multis I take Kal's Enhanced Energy because it was the first one that I noticed when I started taking it that I genuinely felt great. I take tons of antioxidants from fruit and vegetable sources, take complexes for my vision, I take MSM to keep my skin purdy and glowing and it gives me energy without jitters, and I take greens powders for energy and detoxification.

What studies?
Those put out by GNC and Nature Made?
Very few of us need to take any vitamins/supplements/minerals, unless advised to by a physician and by that a mean a MD and perhaps a DO.
Oh when you take these supplements, most of which are made from petroleum and are made in China, like 90% you just piss away - your body doesn't absorb the stuff.
Just eat a healthy diet that includes a lot of grains (which includes high quality beer,) beans, colorful vegetables & fruits, fish, nuts and seeds, minimize red meat and nightshades and you'll be more than fine.

What studies?
Those put out by GNC and Nature Made? Hell no, I don't believe I've ever seen either of those two companies publish studies in medical journals... And those happen to be two brands more interested in giving the customer a great price than putting time, money, and energy into creating a good quality product.
Very few of us need to take any vitamins/supplements/minerals, unless advised to by a physician and by that a mean a MD and perhaps a DO. I'm not sure how you can take this when you live in a country where heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and other diseases run so rampant... Even the FDA recommends that everyone take a multi-vitamin.
Oh when you take these supplements, most of which are made from petroleum and are made in China, like 90% you just piss away - your body doesn't absorb the stuff. I look at a statement like this as an opportunity to tell people that if they are truly concerned about the quality of a product, all they have to do is a little bit of research. If you're shopping for your vitamins in a Walmart, you're going to get crap quality vits. I happened to work for a manufacturer for a while who was based in Utah... I toured their plant, I researched their ingredients (petroleum never being one of them... and by law companies are to list every ingredient, something not ALL companies do, but some of the more responsible ones will), and know for a fact that not all vitamin companies are created equal.
Just eat a healthy diet that includes a lot of grains (which includes high quality beer,) beans, colorful vegetables & fruits, fish, nuts and seeds, minimize red meat and nightshades and you'll be more than fine. Great advice... and if you want extra protection for your body, extra energy, and an extra immune boost, ask your local health food store clerk for an excellent quality, high potency multi.

laboob, what multi(s) would you specifically recommend?

Since I know for a fact that these two companies are of outstanding quality (having worked for them in the past, I'm not shilling, and they laid me off, so I don't sell for them anymore) Solaray has a great One Daily that's pretty high potency and very affordable. Kal has a VM 75 multi that is similarly one-daily and priced reasonably (~15?). If your health food stores don't have it, I like some other brands, Nature's Plus, Nature's Life, Thompson is really affordable and made with the same exact ingredients as Solaray or Kal (owned by the same company, just a value-line). Garden of Life, Lifetime, Natural Sources... there are tons of good companies that make good multis.
My advice really is that you get what you pay for... if you're paying next to nothing for a multi or any kind of supplement, be wary of what is inside... (unless it's a single nutrient supplement like vitamin D which is relatively cheap). There is tons of regulation within reputable companies. In fact, the FDA is regulating so much the supplement industry is in danger of being regulated to DEATH... but that's a conversation for another day.
If you eat a balanced diet, you don't have to worry about this stuff. Of course, my diet consists of steak quesadillas and hamburgers (salsa and tomatoes count as a vegetable).
Anecdotally, I've heard that vitamins don't do much for you at all as they're not really absorbed into your body.

I personally take 'the essentials" from Usana Health Sciences, who manufactures pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplements, which mean's that what you see on the bottle is in the bottle. The products were ranked #1 by an independent group of doctors and nutritional experts in the nutrisearch guide to nutritional supplements, and has been used by many top olympains.
The supplement industry is considered part of the food industry, and the standards for the processing, and creation of the tablet are very low. There are times in which what you see on the bottle, is not really in the bottle, or there might be other ingredients in the vitamin which are not stated.
Another issue that needs to be addressed when taking a supplement is its bio availability, and the time it takes for your body to break down the tablet, if it does not break down within 45 minutes of taking it, it is probably just going to go in one end and out the other. A certain brand has been known to be called "bedpan bullets" by nurses.
For more information on choosing a supplement, I highly suggest checking out http://www.drraystrand.com/cellular-nutrition.asp, which talks about what the body to get in order to obtain optimal health, and give your cells the best amount of cellular nutrition, to prevent degenerative diseases.

Glucosamine Chondroitin does work, but it may affect your digestion. (My mother takes it for her arthritis and it works OK for her, but it was bothering her stomach for a while.)

My new multi just came and I am pretty shocked at how many pills I will be taking every morning for the next month or so.

Animal Pak (http://www.animalpak.com/html/sections.cfm?ID=6)
I knew there were a lot of them to take a day before I ordered them but it's pretty crazy once I finally had to start. Some of these things are like horse pills, monsters.
Today is my fourth day on them. I doubt I will buy them again, it takes too much effort to take these things every day.

If anything I will go back to NOW Adam once the pak is done. Ever since i moved off of Centrum and onto a specialized vitamin I have felt much better in life and haven't been sick in a long time.
I guess Centrum works for most people but all the nonsense that I read says that weightlifters need to take something a little more specialized than your standard stuff, so that's what I have been doing.
Flax I do 2x a day. Trader Joe's liquid caps.

I take about 1000mg of powdered vitamin C everyday, along with vitamin D, selenium, and vitamin E. I used to really overdue it with the vitamin C, but I read a few studies saying that it wasn't necessary to take such a high dosage.

Hi Dave, in 2002 the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that Vitamins and Minerals are an essential tool for giving your body the best chance to prevent cancer.
Recent evidence has shown that cancer is formed when the cells in the body get oxidized, the same way that metal begins to rust after oxidation occurs. We need antioxidants to help prevent against the oxidation, and keep our cells healthy. While a healthy diet is imperative to be healthy, and vibrant it is not completely possible to get the optimal amount of nutrition by food alone.
The food which we eat right now is lacking in nutrients and vitamins compared to 30 and 40 years ago. This is because we are picking the food too soon, pesticides and other chemicals that are used to treat the foods, and how the food is kept and stored.
To get the optimal amount of vitamin E which is 400IU, you would have to eat 4.5 pounds of wheat germ, 2.3 pounds of almonds, or 28.8 pounds of spinach.
It is very true that many supplements are produced and manufactured overseas where god only knows what the manufacturing conditions are like, and many of the store bought over the counter supplements are.
