Hot Nighttime Activities

The central air conditioner in my house just froze up. It's hot in here now. It won't be thawed until the morning--I can't sleep when I'm hot. What the hell am I going to do until PSE&G comes tomorrow to fix it?

I have the worry-free service contract, so they should repair it, or at least recharge the freon in it so it won't freeze again. How far will they go to find the freon leak on a free service call, though?

There's a leak somewhere. It was low three or four years ago when I had it charged and I meant to have it looked at this spring, but since the coolant lines would consistently sweat all the way back to the compressor, I figured it was doing all it could do. Over the last couple of weeks I have been suspect of it's cooling prowess.

The coil in the basement froze solid and the fan (which is below the coil) couldn't pass any air through it. The fan motor was damn hot when I finally figured out something was amiss. Also, the line to the compressor has a good coating of ice on it. I hope it thaws before the service guy comes tomorrow.

If its freezing, it should have enough coolant. Mine froze over the summer, and all it was was dirty filters. I removed them and ran the fan for an hour or two and it was back to normal. A friend of mine is a worry free tech, and explained that they usually freeze up when there isn't enough air moving through the unit.

Not so much hot, but humid. That, and drinking brings up the body temp. It all worked out fine as for sleep but there is no repair yet.
