View Full Version : Lump in my upper eye lid

I did see my general MD today and he said I need to see an Opthimologist(sp) to have it removed.
He called it a chalazion and gave me cephalexin that he said would help shrink it but not get rid of it completely. It looks like I have a BB under my eye lid.
I'm wondering about the procedure and healing time. As a farmer I will soon be working in an extremely dusty environment that will cause irritation. Is there any harm in putting this off for a couple months?
Thanks in advance.

Dave:
A chalazion is simply an area of inflammation that occurs when one of these stupid modified sweat glands under the eyelid ruptures and sets up inflammation. The body reacts by sending in white blood cells that are kinda like bulls in the proverbial china shop...they make a big mess that ends up with you having a nodule in your eyelid.

I get the damned things every once in awhile, and for me, they distort the shape of my eyeball just enough to throw my vision off. So I have to have them removed. Here's how it's done:
1) The doctor will EVERT (turn inside out) your eyelid and grab it with a clamp
http://www.visualdxhealth.com/images/dx/webAdult/hordeolumandChalazionStye_52849_lg.jpg
2) then he/she will STICK A NEEDLE IN YOUR EYELID to numb it. If they're humane, they'll use numbing drops first so it doesn't hurt so bad. If yours is a sadist like mine, this part is a real white knuckle affair.
3) once it's numb, they'll make a little slit in the underside of the eyelid and scoop out the inflammatory mass. No stitches are necessary...it'll just heal up over the next week or so. Your ophtho will give you ointment to put in your eye to prevent infection.
You can put it off; there's no real downside to waiting unless the thing is distorting your vision (that I know of). If the redness grows, however, or if your vision changes, or if there's PAIN, see someone right away.
Hope this helps!
your friend,
steve

That looks much like mine. I could have done with out the detail of the procedure. I'm a down right pussy when it comes to going to the doctor if I know darn well he's going to use a knife. I don't so much mine pain or discomfort once it has been inflicted but the anticipation sucks.
I think it may be distorting my vision a bit so I should probably have it take care of sooner than later.
Thanks for the service you provide here.

I have some thing like that but it's the color of a vein. I figure it's just a blood vessel.

Every couple of years I will get one of those for about a week and it goes away. I've always heard it called a "sty" and they just come and go quickly.
Annoying.

My daughter has had one of these for 6 months. It's shrunk a little and come back but never totally gone away. I'm afraid we're going to finally have to schedule a surgery for her but I hate to since she's only 2.

Nah you just missed your mouth, it was simply a krimpet under your eyelid.
