i'm relatively new to comics, but has marvel always gone from event to event like this?

and how come it seems that since the success of the dark knight that everybody seems to think the key to success is to "go dark"

There’s a war on the cosmic horizon

I hate the cosmic story arcs.

In the '80's it did, but then it died out for awhile. It's back now, and it's not just Marvel. DC is doing it too.

I don't think Dark Knight's success it leading Marvel to go "Dark." When you think of it, the Civil War storyline was pretty dark. Indeed, comics have been a lot darker ever since The Dark Knight Returns and the Watchmen. The mid to late '90s saw a little bit of a recession of that trend, but not completely. DC's been dark as well for awhile too.

Plus, if they are announcing this storyline now for next year, they've probably had the storyline in place since before Dark Knight was released. Bendis has had Secret Invasion planned for years now.

Now, they may have thrown the word "Dark" in the title to capitalize on the Dark Knight success, but I think that's the extent of it.
