One of my clients came in and wanted a completely new look, think short like Rhianna. Well this is what I cut off her hair... over 12 inches.

So I just packaged it up and sent it off to Locks of Love. (http://www.locksoflove.org/mission.html) They use hair to make wigs and hairpieces for kids who suffer any type of hair loss.

Good for you!
I recently read an article that Locks of Love would rather have a check than the ponytail (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/fashion/06locks.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=locks%20of%20love&st=cse&oref=slogin) because people send them so much hair!
Anyway, if you need other organizations to donate hair to, here's a list (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/fashion/06lockside.html?ref=fashion):
* Pantene Beautiful Lengths (http://www.beautifullengths.com) (8" minimum, goes towards making wigs for adult women undergoing cancer treatment; hair must be clean and dry, may be color-treated or permed but not damaged or fragile, no gray hair-it behaves differently)
* Wigs for Kids (http://www.wigsforkids.org) (12" minimum, goes towards making wigs for kids 18 and under undergoing cancer treatment; no dyes, chemical processing or gray)
As a note, all the organizations named above (Locks of Love, Beautiful Lengths and Wigs for Kids) do NOT accept hair that's dirty or dredded. So, if you're cutting your dreds, just toss 'em.

The reason I picked Locks of Love was because the hair was previously chemically treated, although it is in better shape then some heads of virgin hair.
I would have liked to have sent it somewhere more local to me but all the places listed specified no chemical processing at all. Hopefully they will be able to do something with it. I noticed on their website that they said they may sell hair if they can not use it, so that's fine with me too since the money will be going to a good cause.

My wife (bless her little heart) is farming her hair for this. She should look like a lesbian real soon - which we're all REALLY excited about.

im so glad to hear people do this....i should probably participate in it myself but im selfish and obsessed with my hair.....
as a side note....
i gotta know where i can get one of those wigs for cheap because i use synthetic hair extensions sometimes for fun and you cant curl them or do anything with them its a real hassel....but the real hair is just to expensive....
i really do not want to have to get cancer to afford a nice hair piece

Did she cry when you cut off her hair? My friends all donate their's to Locks of Love, but they always cry when they get it all cut off.

Which is why women shouldn't cut their hair.
Those kids can get plently of jobs in sci-fi movies.

I can't agree with the not cutting hair thing. We'd all look like we belonged to that cult in Utah. I guess if we didn't wear the long prairie dresses...nope, it just wouldn't work.

Nope, not at all. She said she likes to do the radical change thing every couple of years and she has had problems in the past getting hairdressers to cut it all off, probably for that exact reason since some people tend to freak out about it.
I figure if you want that much cut off then you have thought about it for a while and didn't just make some stupid "my boyfriend dumped me and I need a change" decision. In that case I'd probably try and talk them down...

Nice. So responsible. A few of the people I've been to are a little "scissor happy" and want to cut off way more than I want. A stylist with morals...I like that.

My friend owns a hair salon that I use to work at. One of the hairdressers clients were Asian. It was a grandmother, a mom and a daughter about 9 years old. The little girl purposely grew her hair for Locks Of Love. When she wanted it done it wasn't long enough. She came in with her mom about 6 months later. The length was perfect. The poor little girl cried as it was being cut. The stylist showed how much hair she cut off. The little girl smiled. Her short little haircut looked adorable. She's looking foward to doing it again. Nice job hunnerbun!

When I cut off my long hair (some of you old school members remember it) the hari place I went to sent it away. Made me feel good to help other people out, even as i was selling out to the man.
I really have never gotten over cutting my hair. I think I might grow it back.

My good deed for the day:
I didn't kill anyone or anything. There was temptation, but I conquered my paranoid schizophrenic delusions and decided to just bite two cats and one squirrel. I feel the compromise saved lives today.
You know, now that I think about it, it's these small acts of heroic kindness that are the foundation of civilized society. It makes me feel good inside. I think I'll go bite something now.

Ew, recycled dreads... gag.
Read the article I linked.
Pro football player R.W. McQuarters, who had dreds, had his dreds cut and donated them to Locks of Love. (Ew, by the way.) He didn't know beforehand that they couldn't use dreds.
They also do not accept hair that is wet.
Yeah, good point.
The hair must be clean AND dry, free from chemicals and styling products.
If it is wet, it may get moldy by the time it arrives at the charity's warehouse.
(Again, Ew.)
