Here's mine:

80 Rufus Wainwright - Want One
74 Michael Jackson - Off the Wall
68 Nirvana - Nevermind
62 Jeff Buckley - Grace
58 Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
50 Rufus Wainwright - Poses
43 Prince - Purple Rain
8 Madonna, The Immaculate Collection, 1990

And I do have to say that owning all three volumes of Queen's Greatest Hits is gayer than having any of the Queen albums on the list, so that hurts me more.

what?!

i have a problem with a couple of these

i clicked on the link to see if they had an explanation for Nevermind. They don't, but the list is albums that gay people love...not necessarily "you are gay if you listen to this"

Perhaps they would twist it as "Kurt Cobain's lyrics speak of isolation and lonliness that alot of gay americans feel blah blah blah". Im sure theres a twist

CofyCrakCocaine

What the fuck is gay about Nevermind? Explain yourself, you assholes! Oh, I suppose that was ironic.

I own 3 of these albums though I'll confess right now that one of them is the Tori Amos album, so I think that should up my gay ratio at least 11%.

Where's Real McCoy in this list? They deserve to be in the top 30.

So was Tall James joking or is the only reason Nirvana's album is on this list is because of a floating naked male baby on the front?

Because if that's so, that's the makers of this list seeing sexual material in that album cover, not the rest of us.

yeah, this seems to be a list written by respectable homosexuals who are just like "This is good music we like", not written by frat boys doing a "ha ha youre a fag if you listen to this! Faggot!"

I know this is just how these lists go, and its really just redundant to even say this, but did the person who wrote this list actually listen to some of these albums or just say 'hey, what do the queers like? bikini kill right? Those chicks are dykes, right? That liz phair sings about fucking dudes alot, you know who else fucks dudes? queers! so put that one on there. And I read in rolling stone that the magnetic fields guy fucked the husker du guy, so lets get some of those albums on theres... I don't know which ones just search amazon."

I'm amazed that someone got paid for coming up with that list. You're right. He/she/they based most of the choices on stuff had had nothing to do with the music like who Bob Mould had sex with in Magnetic Fields, Robert Mapplethorpe taking the shots for Horses, and the naked boy baby on the cover of Nevermind. Speaking of, they might as well include Led Zeppelin for the naked kids on Houses for the Holy. I'm pretty sure one or two of those naked kids are boys. If they wanted to go for gay music - fill up the list with show tunes and disco. If it was based on actual gay people in bands, where is Judas Priest, Buzzcocks, etc? Then they would have to take out the straight bands like Nirvana, even though they put a naked baby on the cover.

All you do is fuck me every day and night

I am lookin' good and I'm feeling nice
Baby you're the best magazine advice

Everything is fresher when the day is sweet
In the morning light when you're already on the phone

Face it, one of these days
Without you I'm just another Dorian Gray
It's the fountain of youth
It's the meaning of life
So hot, so sweet, so wet my appetite

From the article:

"To create our list of the 100 Greatest, Gayest Albums of All Time, we polled more than 100 actors, comedians, musicians, writers, critics, performance artists, label reps, and DJs, asking each to list the 10 albums that left the most indelible impressions on their lives. After receiving responses from Boy George, Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, the Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray, Candis Cayne, Perez Hilton, Nate Berkus, Jake Shears, John Cameron Mitchell, Wilson Cruz, Justin Bond, Darren Hayes, Junior Vasquez, Bruce Vilanch, Janis Ian, the Cliks, Ari Gold, Holly Johnson, and a slew of others, we tallied the results to determine our top-100 list."

74. Michael Jackson, Off the Wall, 1979

I gots 55, but I can't hear them cuz there's dicks in my ears.

But, fer-realz, this looks like a list made by straight hipster record collectors. The fact that this is a poll only proves Ron's point that polls are useless. Poles, however... Where's the Priest? Where's Divine? Why the distinct lack of disco records? And I second that emotion: Village People (duh)? How about Pansy Division? Oh yodel-ay-hee-hoo, where are you Sound Of Music soundtrack? MORE BOWIE!!!

And the Donna Summers should be way more up front. Same with the Cher. Where be Pete Townshend's "Broken Glass?" Hell, Laibach and Rammstein iz gayer than some of the shite on that lst. And what about Antony And The Johnson's FIRST record? Uh, New York Dolls, thank you very much. Wayne/Jayne County and the Electric Chairs. Dexy's Midnight Runners. Bob Mould solos. Fischer-Spooner. Michael Feinstein. Et-thetra, et-thetera.

This list is gay, but not in a rainbow way.

Seems like pretty much everyone agrees this is a stupid list. But to just beat the point to death, here is an experiment. Go to gayest bar on Christopher street and play these albums that were on the gay list:

Zen Arcade
Nevermind
Magnetic Fields

Now play these songs/artists that weren't:

That disco tunes like "It's Raining Men", "I Will Survive", or anything by Donna Summer
Any Barbara Streisand or Bette Midler
Pretty much any showtune fromn a major Broadway show

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Hair - Original Broadway Cast (on cassette AND vinyl)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack
Rent - Original Broadway Cast
Nirvana - Nevermind
Various - Hedwig And The Angry Inch Soundtrack (film only)

However, I am a big fan of R.E.M. and Tori Amos (thank you Justin!) I attended a Tori Amos concert about 3 years ago. By myself. It was awesome. She's an amazing musician. So what if the queer community loves her???

Without Madonna's association with fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, and my (oh-so-flamingly queer) friend Austin's love of both Madonna and JPG, I would not know who Jean-Paul Gaultier is ... and I wouldn't see runway and coutoure fashion as a fun thing. (Thank you, Austin. You rock.)

I love ABBA. I love Cyndi Lauper. I've heard the Indigo Girls and Liz Phair. I like them, too.

David Bowie takes some getting used to, but he's a great influence.

And my friend Sara probably has more of the albums on this list than I do, mostly because she actually BUYS albums (and she always did) rather than someone like me, who BORROWS albums.

I'm actually finding this list to be a lot more interesting after reading the selection criteria ... I already knew that Lou Reed, David Bowie and a lot of "Glam Rock" influenced the music for Hedwig. (C'mon; if you can't tell those were the roots, you're more oblivious than I am.) On the film soundtrack, there's a track that guests some punk band (I forget which one) ... it's a fun song to listen to at full volume when you're cruising through the ShopRite parking lot.
