iPod Touch Second Generation Rocks Our Socks Off
The new iPod touch is out. It has a new design: chrome rim, with a tapered back similar to the iPhone, but thinner. It now includes external volume controls as well. It also has Nike+ integrated, with no transmitter needed, as well as on-the-fly genius playlist creation, all included in the new iPhone 2.1 software. It also comes with new prices, available today: $229 for the 8GB, $299 for the 16GB, and $399 for the 32GB. That's $100 cheaper than before. why do you need larger than 32 gb?
just wondering
feel a need to have every single song you own? even the ones you just skip through?
my itunes library is approaching 100gb, on my ipod i've barely passed 20 gb, simply cause i dont bring songs over i dont want to hear..
i recently shopped around to see other alternatives, and a lot of "touch" type players only have 8gb of storage...put things into perspective.

I got the previous 32g iTouch. Other than the new price, it doesn't look like anything really new.

Nice, I was thinking of getting a 32GB touch but thought it was a bit pricy. Now it's even better and cheaper.
I was also considering a nano since it was really small, but 8GB is not enough space for me and it looked gay. Still looks gay but not as much and 16GB is better. I do like the black wheel on the silver.
I might just go with the touch. I'd like an iPhone but I keep hearing the phone parts sucks and the GPS is a joke, so the touch is all the cool stuff (except the 3G data outside of wifi areas which is the only thing I would be missing)
So the classic has a smaller HD than before?

without a doubt, i need infinite space ... i just got 160 gb, and can't wait to fill it up
if i'm going through everything and digitalizing my collection, i want it all on me at all times ... i don't have the time to go through tens of thousands of songs to fill out a smaller ipod
i tried really hard to find an ipod alternative that fit my needs, and i eventually had to give in ... i sucked it up, put everything in itunes (and had to tweak almost everyone of them to keep it accurate) and my ipod is actually fun to use
ideally, i want a slimmer 250 gb iphone so i can have everything ... but, i'm in no rush

How does it put things into perspective?
There could be a number of reasons why a lot of touch player only have 8gb. Those companies may not have worked out a reliable touch player for greater than 8gb.
Or it could be that most people don't need more than 8gb because they don't have massive song/video collections, and/or don't buy albums (choosing only to buy singles).
But there are people, myself included that like having albums as much or more than having singles. And if you have enough full albums, then 32 gb may not be enough.
I like the ability to take my entire song library with me, and listen to whatever album I want at any time, without the need to go to my iTunes and make sure that album is uploaded. And I don't think my collection is very extensive compared to many others on this board.
Add podcasts, videos, movies, and videos, plus photos of the kids, and 32 gb goes by pretty quick.

it put it into the perspective that most of the touch screen players don't even have a 32gb option, so while we were complaining about 32gb, i realized most max out at 8.
good for you?
i put my ipod in the car on shuffle, and i dont want to have to bother with songs i dont want to hear....thats why i don't have every song in my library on it.

But that's you. You do know that not all consumers have the same preferences, and some want options that others don't, right?
As for the perspective, I didn't see anyone complaining about the 32 gb or that Apples stinks because they don't have a larger model. mikey and others were just stating that they needed a bigger version and were going to wait for that version. So the fact that other companies don't have anything greater than a 8gb model, doesn't put anything into perspective, because their comments were based on what they were looking for in a player, not an evaluation of what Apple was or was not offering.
You'd be right if people were actually stating that the Touch sucks because it only goes up to 32gb, because no touch player goes up that high. But I didn't read anyone as saying that.

I don't have my whole library on my Ipod either. I have just the stuff I like. If I hit shuffle, unless there's a song I'm just not in the mood for, I don't find myself skipping to the next song all that often. I have a larger than average music collection though. I see no reason to switch to a smaller touch when the music portion on my current player alone is already too big for the biggest touch player.

I think it's just too hard of a thing for a program to figure out.
For instance, my favorite Foo Fighter's songs are Long Way To Ruin, M.I.A. and Learn to Fly. If I had those songs to a Genius playlist, will it select all other Foo Fighters songs on it, the albums featuring this songs, or actually pick Foo Fighters songs (and other songs) that makes a great playlist with those songs.
Then there's the question of what makes a great playlist. That varies as well.

I don't think Donnie wants to hear my Ipod story.
I'm bummed about two things - one is the same complaint as you. I was hoping for a bigger Ipod Touch. 32g's would be my smallest one. I could find use for it, but it really wouldn't make sense for me to get it.
But I'm also pissed that instead of making a bigger Ipod classic, they've eliminated the 160g and the 120g is now their biggest. If they made one at 200+, I'd consider purchasing it and getting rid of my other ones.

So I think the Genius playlist option works better than I thought it would (though I haven't tried it enough yet to give it a thumbs up or down).
I selected Foo Fighters Long Road to Ruin, and it spat out a playlist that looked a lot like a playlist that I put together which has this song on it.
I also did one with The Replacements "I Will Dare" and it selected songs by Blood and Roses, Joy Division, Violent Femmes, Pretendrs, Pixies, REM, Squeeze, Liz Phair, and the Talking Heads. Not all of their songs, but a pretty good selection (which would be even better if I had more music by REM, Squeeze, etc).

They are, but on the "I Will Dare" playlist, there are several types of genres, such as alternative, rock, soundtrack, and alternative rock. So it's not solely a genre based system.

I have the same issues with the 32 gb Touch. I took off all of the audiobooks, the Smodcasts that I have listened to, as well as my Best Week Ever podcasts, half of my music videos and most of the tv shows I've bought.
I have to keep my photos since that's the main way I show people pics of my kids.

I only store unviewed/listened to podcasts on the iPod (and delete all except Tiki Bar TV after listening/viewing), but half of them are video and there are some that are daily, so it all adds up. So unless I upgrade to 32gb, I won't be carrying pics of your kids.

I'm holding off on a new iPod for a while.
I have a 5th gen 80gig iPod and a 1gig iPod shuffle that I snap into a set of headphones when I work out.
I keep the iPod in the car - the audio system has a connection for the iPod and controls the iPod, so I have the iPod mounted out of sight.
I'll get an iPhone when I can use a carrier other than AT&T - where I live AT&T just isn't an option.
So far I really like iTunes 8 and the Genius feature works really well - just don't even bother to try it on an AC/DC song.

From what I understand and I could be wrong AT&T is going to be the provider for the Iphone for a long time. The reason the phones are so cheap is because you pay a a little fee to make up the price difference on you ATT phone plan. Your only other option would be to jail break it.

Yeah, AT&T is actually paying Apple a subsidy of around $200 (I think) for each iPhone they sell, which is why it's cheaper. If you buy it without a contract, you pay the old price, $399 for 8 gigs, and $499 for 16.
I know Apple extended their agreement with AT&T for at least another year when they did this, and it runs through 2011, I think. We'll see what happens then.

You mean beyond the 120 GB Black and Silver that are on sale for this Holiday Season? Steve said most people are currently buying the thin classic (80GB) as opposed to the thick one (160GB) so they are discontinuing the thick one and upping the thin one to 120GB at the same price ($249)
I know there are people who want as much music/video as they can carry so I can't imagine sales are really poor on the 160GB. They should have kept the "thick one" and made it 240 GB.

I did with a similar problem. My iPod's warranty was over but there was a couple of issues. They told me they could fix it for $250, or I could recycle the model in for a refund ($50 or $75) and then buy the the 60 gb model (which was new at the time) which was going for $300.

I was the first one to trash the new iPod nano and yet I am the first one to buy one. My sister wanted one for her birthday so I picked one up today. Here are some pics. I obviously can't take it out of the packaging so all pics are in packaging. It looks much better in person.

So I just threw the 2.1 update onto my iPhone, and I just took the new Genius playlist out for a ride. I'm sure it works the same way as it does on the Touch. Anyway, you go to the Playlists, and select the Genius playlist. Then you are shown the list of all your songs, and you pick the one you want to base it on. Wait a few seconds, and there's your list of 25 songs, just like in iTunes.
I do think you need an Internet connection, Wi-Fi or otherwise, to use it. I'm not quite sure of that.
A small thing that's been added I like: if you look at the list of songs, it puts the name of the artist and album below the name of the song. This is handy if you have more than one version of the same song: now, I can tell just looking which "Sweet Jane" on my iPhone is the original VU version, and which is the later live Lou Reed cut, without actually selecting either. Quite nice.

It sounds like the abilty to add Genius lists directly on your iPod is coming with the firmware update.
Right click on the "Genius" playlist, select "Export Song List"... File/Library/Import Playlist...
Kind of ass backwards, but it gets the job done, I'm really digging the Genius feature.

Again, this is useless for me since I manually update my Ipods, but I could see some use for it if does become a firmware update for the players.

It is, at least in the Touch and iPhone.

...and it looks like itunes already adds the playlist to my ipod classic, making that bit i wrote earlier create a totally redundant playlist. it'd rule so much if they add genius to the firmware. i'm sleepy/retarded.

Why?
Apple really does not care if you've copied CDs to iTunes or downloaded music from other sources - they want to know what music you have, so they can make suggestions to you, that you might buy from Apple, based on what's on your iTunes library.

If you do a google search, there are a number of different resources for doing this.
Here's one guide. (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/the-complete-guide-to-converting-dvds-to-ipod-format-mac)

Yes, but it's tricky. Use a program like DVD Decrypter to rip the files, then use a coverter to put them in the format the iPod uses.
I'll research later when I can cut and paste again.

That is the way I've been doing it on my Macs for years. Don't forget about MacTheRipper either.
For the PC, I would try think place (http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/14/how-to-convert-a-dvd-for-your-ipod-with-video-in-windows/) or maybe this place (http://www.dvd-tool.com/dvd-itunes.html) or maybe this place (http://www.iskysoft.com/dvd-ripper-windows.html). I don't know about the PC side too much so I have no idea which programs actually work or are free.

Yeah, I love iTunes. Some people don't like to use it even if they have an iPod, but I have been using it forever, before I got a portable music player for it. Watching movies on it is not as nice as other players, but for music and podcasts I haven't found anything I like more.
I've started to put some movies and shows on iTunes for when I get the touch. My current iPod does not play video.

I'm really digging this "Genius" play list creator. So far I picked one track out of the 17,000+ .mp3's in my iTunes library and it gave me a very cool play list with 25 different songs from different artists. Apparently you can choose how many songs you want in the play list anywhere between 25 and 100 and then either listen to it one time or save it for later.

I am really liking the Genius app a lot more than I thought I would. I have about 15 genius playlists saved on my Ipod for different moods. There are usually a couple of tracks that don't seem to fit (possibly because the artists are linked rather than genre or tone) but that's easy to take care of. The songs chosen by Genius are many times not the obvious ones, but they do choose some good ones.
The one thing that is strange is that there do seem to be a couple of songs that come up a lot when you generate playlists. For instance, despite the variety of songs I've used to generate playlists, it seems like about a third to a half of them include Camper Van Beethoven's "Take the Skinheads Bowling".

And that's a problem? :)
I wish I could try genius, but those who manually update can't use this feature. I understand why this is the case with the classic models, but shouldn't it be pretty easy to use a wi-fi connection to set it up on an Itouch.

Anyone hear rumors that Apple will soon announce some new models/versions of the iPod Touch or that they will drop prices on them?
On my current Touch, the wireless antenna isn't working anymore and there is now a quarter inch gray "spot" on the near the top that obscures video etc. The warranty, etc. is up on it, and I can't imagine a repair will be cheap. If I bought a new model at current prices, it would cost me about $400.

Well, the big rumor is that Apple is going to put out a big-ass iPod Touch, which would be closer to a tablet computer. That'll probably be more than $400.
My guess is that when new models of the iPhone are announced on Monday, there'll be some new models of the iPod Touch announced too. My guess would be faster processors and more RAM, like the iPhone will have. Maybe a 64GB model too, which would be nice.
By the way, the big reason for this new iTunes update was to support version 3.0 of the iPhone/iPod Touch firmware. That's probably right around the corner.

So some new iPhones are scheduled to come out on monday. I'll keep my fingers crossed for new Touches.

You can't.
Not yet. That will be added in the 3.0 software upgrade, which should be any day now.
Apple, in its infinite wisdom, might charge iPod Touch users for it. I think it'll be $9.95. It's going to add so much that I think it's worth it, but it's kind of cheesy, even if I see why they do it (us iPhone owners kick a bit of cake back to them every month, you deadbeat iPod Touch users don't.)

Why would they make something that didn't have that basic ability to begin with?
Also, if this update does come out, will it be likely an update that iTunes will alert me to and give me the option to get that ability?

Anybody have this problem before - iTunes is only playing the most recently downloaded songs in the library. It skips right past all the other songs (shuffle mode or otherwise) and only plays the recently downloaded ones.
Its pretty fucking annoying. Any help?

This is un-usable. Either I got a lemon.. or.. the iPhone is not a usable phone. I got rid of a two year old Samsung Alias that was easily 2x as loud as this thing.
