You must set the ad_network_ads.txt file to be writable (check file name as well).

Is there any way to block all the crap on the sides of blogs, such as the links, useless descriptions of the people writing them, and other non-adblock-able stuff?

You can add stuff to addblock by right clicking the image. I also recommend the NoScript add-on to block crap.

You can block just about anything on a web page with Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper.
