Or is just in my head?

Hi Dr. Steve!!!

Long story short: constant bleeding for 3 years. FINALLY got insurance. Went to gyno. She took tests. Endometrial biopsy: normal. Blood work (thyroid and iron levels): normal. Trans-vaginal sonogram found A SINGULAR fibroid, which she said is normal and nothing to worry about. She said my problem was hormonal.

She had put me on 10mg of progesterone and it made me bitchIER, achy and tired, so I did less, slept more, ate more and gained SIX pounds in one month (since my last visit). Granted, six pounds on me is like adding a deck chair to the Queen Mary, but that's a lot, even for me!! I was miserable. I was crampy and got these stabbing pains in my right ovary.

I've been off the progesterone since 8/27 (about a week and a half). She put me on birth control pills (Mircette) on Tuesday, 9/2 and WOW!!!! SUDDENLY I want to FUCK. The nerdy Puerto Rican guy at work is now a swarthy latino THAT I MUST HAVE. He's growing a goatee and GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

I read up on Mircette and it's a low dosage of... err, various hormones. I KNOW I was MISERABLE on progesterone, but within 8 hours of taking the first Mircette pill, I wanted to hump everything.

Dr. Steve, is this just in my head? I'm thinking not so much since I was SO miserable on the progesterone. AND, I think most of the weight I gained was fluid retention since I'm now peeing like a race horse and my clothes and body feel better. What sort of hormonal imbalance could I have? I remember a doctor telling me I wasn't ovulating, but I was too lazy to look it up in my handy-dandy home-edition of the Merck Manual (which doesn't tell you very much. I have the REAL manual, but it makes my head hurt).

Thank you for your answer.

PS-- I feel like a lost cause since I just want to stay home and watch my DVD of Police videos. I do manage to get to work, but, man oh man, am I thinking about that video for Don't Stand So Close to Me!!!!

Petrina:

I know you didn't want to try "hormones", but as we discussed previously, oral contraceptives (which are simply hormones) have come a LONG way since you took them last.

The "pill" is a trick that your doctor uses to make your body think it's pregnant, basically. It's a combination of a provera-like hormone and an estrogen-like hormone. You don't ovulate, so none of the fun stuff that comes with ovulation happens.

Some people report a loss of libido (sex drive) with Mircette, and some report an increase in libido. Depending on your outlook, you're one of the lucky ones :-)

The "provera"-like drug in Mircette is desogestrel...the "estrogen-like" part is ethinyl estradiol, which is commonly used in oral contraceptives. Balancing a progesterone and estrogen together produce the desired effect (in your case, hopefully, a cessation of blood flow, and improvement in symptoms).

If you're on the pill, don't smoke! Smoking and oral contraceptives increase the risk of blood clots and strokes and stuff. Bad! If you're over 35 and smoke, you can't take oral contraceptives at all.

If this works, you can probably avoid having your uterus removed surgically, which is definitely a plus.

Hope this helps.

your pal,

steve
