Anna Paquin is almost reason enough for me to NOT watch it. (her and Kirsten Dunst will keep me from seeing a movie)
But.... anything that deals with modern day vampires is worth a shot.
Isn't Jay Mohr in this thing too?
How's the tone... is it a comedy? God I hope not.

Decent show so far. First ep obviously had to set up the characters, plotlines, the world, etc., but it was ok. I'm willing to watch it and see what happens next week.
Watched it last night with my chick - I thought it was ok at best, she loved it. They're definitely trying to tap the Vamp/Romance which has taken over the book stores the last few years. The movie 'Twilight' which hits in a few weeks (trailer ran with the Dark Night) is one of those series which sold some insane millions of books worldwide which they are going to try and sequel out.

i just finished reading twilight which i thought was good, but dragged on a bit, but i can understand because the author wants you to familiarize yourself with the characters since its a series. Im reading the second one New Moon right now....we shall see where this leads.
I dvr'd True Blood last night but caught the ending of some chick getting kicked in the face which looked pretty sweet. i'm going to watch it tonight..cant wait!

You know, on those "Twilight" books -- it amuses me that the author is a hardcore Mormon who insists that the main characters not have sex before they marry.
Yet, one of them is a vampire.
So sucking blood is A-OK, but fucking before marriage is a sin.
OK then.

OK, I could by the ham-fisted parallels of the vampires being an "oppressed minority" if they weren't fucking superpowered as all get-out. But isn't part of why a minority is opressed the feeling of the majority that they could be *superior*? That is, we don't keep them down, they'll take over. (Or they'll take your women, at least.). So it does work in that regard.

Yeah, but in real life, it's a majority keeping down a minority with overwhelming force because the majority controls everything and the minority can't do much becase they have so fewer numbers and negligible resources compared to the majority. That goes out the window when the minority has fucking superpowers up the whazoo and each could probably slaughter hundreds of the majority before being put down.

Yeah, especially since it's apparently well known that it can be used as a drug. I'd be hard pressed to m believe that if it's out on the market somewhere (regardless of the fact that it's illegal), someone would have tried to analyze it

im confused as to what some of the powers of a vampire are - this is what i have come up with:
-longevity
-healing abilities
-ability to change forms (some)
-blood acts like viagra
-can move quietly
-can move really fast
-superior strength
anything i miss? i didnt know that vampires had some much strength and ability to move like the flash, did anyone else?

I have the same feeling when i watch her in movies. I have narrowed this feeling down to starting when i saw the firs X-Men movie (I had seen her in others but she was never a major major role).
In X-Men she has this dumb as shit expression on her face for 96% of the movie, i guess she was supposed to be scared of magneto and herself but it literally came across as if she was half retarded. I think because of her teeth-they seem a little buck-toothed as well as gapped.

Ok, isn't it a little odd that you are discussing the imaginary abilities of imaginary beings from a TV show based on a fiction book?
Vampires can do whatever a writer decides they can do, they have weaknesses that a writer decides they have. There is no general canon about vampires. Everything we imagine as "facts" about vampires - garlic, silver, daylight, longevity, etc. were at one point imagined by a writer.

I'm not calling them out for writing fiction...I'm calling them out for writing fiction where the "oppressed people" have a wealth of ridiculous superpowers that give them massive advantages over the people supposedly "keeping them down." It would be one thing if this was in a major urban setting, and there was potentially a very large and powerful police force keeping things in check (though even that is a stretch with these people having super strength, super speed, the ability to change shape and Lord knows what else, probably flight and hypnotism, as per usual), but this series is set in Podunkville (just to hammer you over the head with the "THIS IS JUST LIKE RACISM IN OUR HISTORY BOOKS!!!" point) where the local authorities apparently have the law enforcement capabilities of Barnie Fife.

I wish we could have BOTH John from Cincinnati and True Blood, but rotating through the TV season (John from Cincy--summer season, True Blood fall/winter season). I loved that show too and was mad, albeit not surprised, it got cancelled.

My problem with the show is that Alan Ball doesn't so much make a point as beat the hell out of you with his point. I mean, down to having Sookie's redneck brother complain about "special rights" for vampires, the show strays dangerously close to crossing the line from using the story as a metaphor to outright advocacy of a political position. We'll see if this continues, or gets reigned in somewhat.

Love the show. Anna is super hot (love how they are dressing her!)
So I don't understand something, isn't drinking vampire blood the thing that turns a human into a vampire? I know things vary between vampire movies/tv shows/books but I thought that was pretty standard? If people are using it as a drug (It's called "V Juice"?) they aren't turning into vampires. They how did Bill become one at 30, in 1865?
And yes, how the hell would the public not already know about the healing power of Vampire Blood? Or that Silver hurts them?

yeah nowadays anything about vampires they just make their own rules up. Then whenever someone says something like "i thought you didn't like garlic" they say "thats just a silly human myth"
But I don't think they explained yet how one becomes a vampire. I'm confused about it.

I thought so too, but it looks like that is not the case on this show.
One thing that bugged me about the first episode is the interview with Bill Maher. He talks about the sorted history of feeding off people before Tru Blood came out. The American Vampire League spokeswoman says there is no proof of this, but wouldn't that fact that there was no synthetic blood for vampire to live off prove that they had to get blood from somewhere?

Yeah, I can't stand her either, but that town seems so backwoods, I have to wonder if there is a second bar to go to.

well he played with that other dog that was with Sookie when she got attacked
but i have another question
Alot of the vampires have very modern tattoos. It seems weird to me that these beings would be around for 100+ years and decide to get tattoos within the last 10. Seems silly to me at that point

I thought so too, but it looks like that is not the case on this show.
One thing that bugged me about the first episode is the interview with Bill Maher. He talks about the sorted history of feeding off people before Tru Blood came out. The American Vampire League spokeswoman says there is no proof of this, but wouldn't that fact that there was no synthetic blood for vampire to live off prove that they had to get blood from somewhere?
wasn't it mentioned by one of the vampires on the first episode that they can live off the blood of animals, they just didn't like it as much
or am i confusing this with some other vampire story

Now I go back to my question of how does a vampire turn a human into another vampire. It looks like Bill was turned by drinking Vampire Blood when he was close to death. Isn't that what happened to Sookie?
And are they really going to kill off Gran? That's just wrong.

Yeah, I'm a little confused on that one too. But some in vampire lore, it has to be a feed to feed connection to make one a vampire. I'm under the presumption that's the case here.
Yep, Gran's dead. Which is surprising because she seems to be a Voice of Reason/Conscience in the show and I'm not sure where that's going to come from now. But if they're following the books, which I haven't read, then I guess there's a bigger purpose to it.

The usual vampire mythology (must have started with Bram Stoker) was that a vamp has to bite you first then the you have to drink the vamp's blood. Something abut the mixing of bloods.

It could be Sam, but I also think that it could be the Detective Andy Bellefleur. Anyone notice that after Bill said a vampire wouldn't resist a fresh corpse, the next corpse (Gran) is all bloodied up, rather than strangled? Just a theory, could be wrong.

I absolutely noticed that. Either Sam is a wolf-like creature or the show is doing everything in its power to make us think he is a werewolf. You're right though, the murderer could be Bellefleur instead. Bill had a reaction when he heard that name and my radio psychic would be that Bellefleur may be the descendant of that lady Vampire who created Bill. I dont think they gave her name.

This show had damn near lost me about 2/3 of the way in. It seemed to be way too much soap opera going on: The Bold and the Beautiful with bloodsuckers. And, yeah, Tara's character is becoming unbearable. And I thought it was ridiculous that after Lafayette's been shown to be, basically, a drug dealing scumbag in the past few episodes, he gets to deliver the rah-rah, you-go-girl denunciation of some homophobic rednecks. Yeah, quite the role model there. And I'm getting sick of Jason fucking everything.
But the end drew me back in, and the preview of next week looks good. It's like the show has been almost avoiding the vampire storylines in a lot of ways, but they're coming now.

If I recall, both of Sam's parents are shapeshifters. Shapeshifters have one shapeshifting child (always the firstborn of a couple), and any subsequent offspring are "normal" people, often with enhanced athletic skills. There are many different shapeshifters throughout the series, which will be significant during the next couple seasons (should the show last that long).

it definitely had to do with his enhanced sense of smell, he wasn't just rolling around. he was totally sniffing the sheets. and don't forget the fact that he barks in his sleep. definitely sounds like a warewolf or something like it.
It could be Sam, but I also think that it could be the Detective Andy Bellefleur. Anyone notice that after Bill said a vampire wouldn't resist a fresh corpse, the next corpse (Gran) is all bloodied up, rather than strangled?i think he's sketchy, but having blood all over the place the way it was really doesn't add up to me. bill had said that a vampire wouldn't have been able to resist draining the blood. that body wasn't drained, it was just a bloodied mess.

actually they could always be hurt by silver. In the 1850's They used to sell a vampire-hunting kit that included a gun with silver bullets. Silver weapons are useful against almost all evil creatures. And the older mirrors were polished silver, those were the ones they didn't cast a reflection from.

It's not the police so much as Andy Bellfleur who seems to be desperate to find a lead in the case for two reasons. One being the obvious: to solve the case. The second reason is that he wants to gain respect in his hometown and solving the case might finally get it done for him. Think about it. Since the first episode he's been disrespected by Officer Larry-Darryl-Darryl, Sookie, Grannie Stackhouse, Tara, and even been thrown up against his truck by Jason. It makes sense that he'd hunt down every lead just on the small chance that it would gain him hero status in the community.

i just assumed, like everyone else, that he is more of a local than an authoritative figure. what case is he being investigated for? i thought they were more interested in wondering why he was running naked in the woods, no? the case for the girls that have been murdered throughout the show, for Gran, or for that vamp. house?

Interesting, but I can't see that making much sense.
I mean, how would a vampire even have the virus in their blood if they aren't susceptible to human diseases? Would they actually carry it, but not be affected, or would them being a vampire automatically kill the virus?

I'm thinking they would carry it, and it would spread to living humans. And possibly be mutated in some way.

I mean the murders of the four(?) women that have recently happened. This includes Grandma Stackhouse. It seems like he's trying to make every lead work, whether it's Jason's connections to the murdered women or Sam exhibiting suspicious behavior by running naked through the woods. So you're right, he was interested in Sam being out there, but in my view it's because he's trying to pin down some murder suspects.

my only problem with that is Sam, as far as we know, wasn't really connected with any of the murders, as far as we know. if Andy (the detective) is trying to connect Sam to murders, without any information or evidence, he deserves to be treated like the ham and egger of the town like he is now. the only thing that we can conceive that would be a connection, though Andy never saw it, was when Sam was sniffing the sheets of where the waitress died.

I completely forgot about him having scenes with the dog.
Now I'm right back at "what the flying fuck is with the dog????"!!!!!!!!
So i've got to go with the theory that there is more than one shapeshifter in Bon Temps. I don't think it is a werewolf, because that would just convolute the story.Plus, wouldn't vampires know that werewolves exist???? I'm thinking that the murders were committed by a human, to show that we can be every bit as evil and dangerous as any vampire.

A little late to respond here but of course he's connected. One of the women worked for him and he was her landlord with unfettered acceess to her apartment. Not to mention that another of the victims' granddaughter works for him, and that granddaughter's brother was a prime suspect. He has more than a few connections. Add to that the suspicious behavior and his murky background and it's easy to see why he'd be questioned.

i guess i should have been more clear - i love to ramble. i should say that there was no real motive that would connect Sam to the murders, or, at least a credible one. he really doesn't have that murky a background, he just lied about where he and his parents are from - people lie about their family all the time.

Two things. I agree that there's no motive to tie Sam to the murders, but I think that a guy like Bellfleur who is out of ideas and leads will take any chance he can get. Also, you're not looking at this in the context of the story. We have seen through Sookie's telepathy that the residents of Bon Temps are some serious gossipy motherfuckers. To them a guy like Sam does have a murky background. Even Sookie doesn't know anything about him, so you can reasonably assume that the rest of the town with their proclivity to find out ever sordid detail of the life that goes on around them, would wonder about him from time to time. And I have to keep stressing this here, Andy Bellfleur is under pressure to bring some resolution to the murders, so even if there's a missing motive or evidence, he is going to pursue a lead anyway. Why would he have called the nudist colony to check on Sam's story otherwise?

I feel that Andy wants respect from his town more than being a good cop. i have to say that because people dont know a background of someone, like Sam, doesnt mean its a murky one, they just dont know anything about him. but sure, people would want to know about anyone else's past in a small town like that. with that thinking, he would be finding out his background because he is a fuckin' ham and egger, not that he was being a good cop. I find Andy to be funny, and i can certainly relate to him, but he just isnt that good a cop, as far as we know, and as far as he has shown us.

Apparently, according to an interview with Alan Ball, they are adding elements of Book 2 for the last 2 episodes so it will be an easier tie-in when they start Season 2 (which will be based off of the 2nd book).
