She did mention that his thoughts are "different" than other people. She probably just couldn't put together what that really meant because she had no idea what Sam really is and really couldn't make that connection to something she didn't even know existed.

I'm currently 5 episodes in OnDemand so I breezed through this thread in order to not see anything that would ruin the future of the show. I still can't tell if I like this show or I don't. The whole vampires living openly society is weird to me. I don't get how vampires can bite you and you won't turn into a vampire. I don't like how vampires that live together are mean but vampires that live alone are trying to "mainstream" and be friendly. I hate that they call vampire blood "V", like its a horrible drug or something. But I like Anna Paquin cause shes hot, Bill the vampire intrigues me, the opening song kicks ass and theres always at least one hot girl getting naked each episode. So I'm still on the fence with all these factors pulling me in both directions between love and hate. Now I gotta see how this season turns out.

I was very satisfied with the season finale. I was worried that they were going to leave too much up in the air like some finales do, just because of the trend to end each episode on some sort of cliffhanger. But they wrapped up the 1st season nicely and gave us just enough of a cliffhanger to go into the 2nd season. I'm probably the most interested in the Maryann character and what her deal is.

I avoided spoilers like the plague for the finale. I really just wanted to see it play out onscreen instead of finding out things beforehand. So, I saw what I thought was an innocuous interview with the actor that plays Lafayette on a comics site I go to. I decide to read it because he's my favorite character on the show. Lo and behold, in her last comment this dingbat interviewer writes:

Thinking of getting the books for my wife- are they worth the read?

Yes, the books are definitely worth the read. Since all but the last 3 came out in paperback first, they are pretty cheap too ... get 'em at Target or Walmart to pay $5 rather than $8 each. The one that's out in hardcover now (Dead and Gone) is the 9th book and the author, Charlaine Harris, has been contracted to do at least 10, possibly more. She does "know" how the series ends and insists Sookie won't go vamp on us, but that's about all she's letting us in on over at her fansite.

In October, Ms. Harris and her publisher are releasing an anthology of Sookie short stories, which should also be read if your wife gets into the books - the anthology is titled Touch of Dead and is available for pre-order on Amazon.

However, if your wife is one of those people who needs film or TV adaptations to be exactly like the books, tell her to pick one or the other because the differences may drive her up the wall.

Personally, I find the differences to be very interesting and am curious to see how Alan Ball plays with the "Sookieverse" in future seasons. If nothing else, I'm looking forward to seeing more of Alexander Sarsgard, the actor who plays Eric Northman, and Sam Trammell (who plays Sam Merlotte on the show) in Season 2, which starts on 6/14.

Here's the thing about that: Sookie's telepathy only works on people's current thoughts. In order for her to have "heard" what Sam is, prior to his revelation to her, Sam would have had to have been thinking about being a shifter at the specific time when Sookie listened in to his thoughts. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't have that on my mind all the time if I were trying to hide it!

Add to the fact that shifters' brain patterns are tougher to read (in the books, they're described as "tangled") and there's a VERY low probability that Sookie would've heard Sam's secret beforehand.

Lastly, say what you like about Sookie, but she believes it's imprudent to listen to your boss's thoughts, having lost jobs before by doing that exact thing. Her shielding may be imperfect, but she's strong enough to keep herself from reading Sam's thoughts on a whim.

Of course, they could always go the Queen of the Damned route and have a bar named for one of the vampire bars mentioned in the prologue - Dr. Caligari or Dracula's Daughter or something like that ...

i just finished watching the entire first season (took 3 days!). i hate this show, i like this show. it definitely got less campy as the first season went on. the first few episodes were smacking you in the face with ridiculousness. (aside from the whole vampires exist thing of course cause that's not ridiculous at all). i'm in for the new season but since i still don't have hbo i will only be able to watch when i head back to the city some weekends just like how i watched eastbound & down.

Well they did some major changes with Lafayette and with Tara. And with all the characters that are in the books it would be very hard to keep track. One character I like in both the show and the books is Eric. Really liked the way he sticks it to Pam about her muddy pumps.

From what my wife tells me in the books Sookie is sort of a slut. If they start to introduce the fairy godmother stuff in the show I think I am going to be out.

In the books, instead of the women who does the exorcism on Tara and her mom found dead in the car with her heart ripped out, it is lafayette. So they did a big change from the book, and I think for the better.

I'm pretty sure there is a referance to the queen in the first season, although it's not explicit. When Bill is talking to the creepy gay vampire in his house about the desire for the vampire nest to feed on Sookie, Bill threatens to appeal to authorities to stop them. The gay dude says he's not afraid of Eric, Bill says something like he'll go above Eric and the gay dude says 'I'm not afraid of her either.'

Hopefully they'll pull the queen in, she's a pretty good character.

That scene was a real fucking tearjerker. After the absurdity of seeing Eric's head on Bellfleur's body, Lafayette's reaction and Terry's attempt to comfort him brought it right back down to earth. Amazingly well done.

I liked last night’s episode. Finally we get to see the manyard..or whatever actually does something. Loved when Sam just hauled off and punched Daphne...should have punched her for not showing any tit. The episode started off slow but had a great finish. And next episode looks good. I enjoy the show very much, but they are killing me with Maryanne.... alright already we get it she wants the power.. The cutting of the heart scene was nasty... and what the f**k, isn't this a show about vamps, aren't vamps violent... That was the saddest excuse of a "war". They really needed to get a fight going there. It seems like the episodes are good only every other week... In the books, Maryanne's charachter who isn't even named Maryanne she is just a Maenad never gets involved with the vamps. She attacks Sookie, the vamps heal Sookie and then she shows up at an orgy with about 6 or 8 people. She ends up killing them and then she moves on. other than attacking Sookie I thougt the Maenad was pretty insignificant in the books as well. The Maenad story line is nothing like what is going on in the show.Also in the books, while the Maenad is hanging in the woods in Bon Temps, Sam is actually frolicking with her as the collie.

I agree 100%. Personaly I just don't care about her as a charecter. That story line does nothing for me. The vampire stuff moves at a nice pace and focuses on the characters and how they interact. The maryanne thing is just too big and effects too many people in one big swoop. instead of a show about what the world is like where vampires are real, we have the spawn of Satan taking over and entire town. It feels too much like TNT or SyFy made for TV movie.

Well those using V only would hit small amounts like acid so I think that once you go all the way and get alot more in your system (during times that she had to drink alot of the blood to heal herself) you probably lose the effect that a drop provides to people without massive blood exposure.

"It's no wonder the humans fear us and are repulsed by our existence" (or something to that effect). goddric was, most likely, one of the most powerful vampires in existance. He really could have effected change inside the community. But he chose to die instead of stick around to help his cause just because he seemed bored??? Now those people who wanted him to be dead will move against the humans.

You're absolutely right. I really cannot fathom why he he did what he did when he could have been an asset to Vamp/Human co-existence. Him killing himself will be so detrimental to that cause, you would think he would've realized that and stick around longer just because of that.

As for how it will affect Eric, it's definitely already shown a softer side of him to Sookie and us viewers, even through his shennanigans. Sookie will keep reminding him of how Goddric's feelings were toward humans in the end to bring him around to humans as well as his profound interest in her.

And yes, she does indeed look good in this show, though I wasn't impressed with her performance as Rogue. :wink:

I like the way Godrick decided to say enough, I'm tired and just want to die...thought it was very cool. Also liked that they showed another side to Eric, I say still keep him a scumbag, it is a better character. Also liked when Bill punched Eric and he was bleeding and as he turned back to look at Bill he was already healed.

He could have just turned into a fly and gotten out of there right away from the begining. Is there a limit to the amount of people Mary Anne can influence at once? What's stopping her from having cities upon cities of people at her command? In the past she must have had more people under her control only to lose them somehow.

While I'm not saying this ^ is false, I think it might just be because when he's running or scared he's in panic mode and not thinking clearly enough to know what to change into. When he was running away and saw the owl, it probably just gave him the idea to change into one...I might be wrong as well...:unsure:

For all those that are wondering about Sookie and her "new" power, I'm guessing you guys don't recall the very first episode.

Remember when Bill was being attacked by those two people that wanted to harvest his blood? When Sookie came out, she grabbed the guy and threw him through the air with some sort of supernatural strength. It's obvious she has some underlying powers that she is unaware of so I doubt this flash of light is anything new picked up from Maryanne's attack.

Wow. What a shit episode. Evan Rachel Wood is like the fucking high school play version of a vampire queen. Really badly acted.

Highlights were every scene with Eric, Sookie entering the house with sink-man and floor-creep, and Carl getting capped. On the other hand, Lafayette getting turned, Tara getting re-turned, and Lettie Mae turning on Sookie and Lafayette were so telegraphed it was painful to watch. I'm strongly looking forward to a fresh start next season. As it is I'll be watching the finale only out of a need to see the story play out instead of actual enjoyment.

It seems like there are no mediocre episodes. Only the really good and shit the bed bad.
