The problem is, he's got a thick british accent and he's not enunciating at all, while talking very fast. That shit works for British audiences, but you can't work it like that when dealing with an American audience.

so i was watching MTV yesterday, they have that show "True Life" and they did an episode "True Life: Im Deaf"

In this documentary, a 16 year old boy who never heard a thing in his life, got an operation so he can hear. He never heard a thing in his life and now he can hear. The thing is, even though he can hear, it will still take him years to understand language. The sounds that make up words don't make any sense to him, and he has to practice for a long long time before he can make sense of it all.


My point is, I feel like that deaf kid watching this VMAs. I hear all these sounds that i recognize as language, but whether these are words or just strung together random sounds, i can not tell for the life of me

I'll tell you how. This show isn't a real awards show, and has always been financed by the record industry. Britney is recording an album that they want out by Christmas, and those idiots firmly believe that it can save the record industry. By giving her good publicity tonight for an album that bombed beyond belief when it was released last year, the dumb People Magazine-reading/TMZ-viewing public will go back to liking her.

The worst thing that ever happened was the telecom bill of '96 (or was it '98), coupled with the various mergers that turned the six major labels into three. Now the majority of radio stations are owned by a couple of companies, and instead of music people the record companies now have marketing people that dictate to MTV and radio what self-created "artists" they're going to push.

Does anybody believe Katy Perry is talented? Despite the airplay, her album has stiffed. The same with the majority of the morons on this show. It's not downloading that's killing the industry; it's the continued emphasis on over-produced, fashion-first phoney stars that we're supposed to accept. There's as much good music and bands out there as always; they just don't get a chance anymore.

What's funny is that my kids download a lot of the songs from guitar hero and think they are just awesome. I have to laugh because if I had tried to get them to listen to some of those bands they would have flipped and called me a dinosaur. but also, if you really think about it, there didn't seem to be much Rap either. There was that one black guy, but if you think of other VMAs where it was all Eminem and 50 Cent and whoever....there wasn't much rappers. There were a lot of black people, but they didn't seem to be rapping. They were doing, like, I guess R&B and club type shit. Even Kanye West's song didn't seem to be a rap song, that guy was actually singing a song

So, I'm thinking, at the place where MTV is these days, they only can deal with "Pop" in the most extreme example of Pop. Nothing outside of the "Pop" genre at all seems represented whatsover

Unless you consider Staind or Coldplay 'Rock' , MTV left that genre by the wayside with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie around 7 or 8 years ago. It's all about mixing ACDC, Zep, and The Police riffs with generic flavor of the month rapper with well known producer since then.

Eh... it depends on where you look. I'm sorry, but I'd much rather listen to many bands from today than hear the "grunge sound" again. I'm just bored with it, I loved it, but now when it comes on the radio, I just turn the dial. The Mars Volta, Protest The Hero, Coheed and Cambria, and more like them are so much better than hearing "Spoonman" again. Don't get me wrong though, GnR is still good to hear, along with a few STP songs, and MAYBE a couple of Pearl Jam, but that effected deep voice they sing with is just comical at this point.

I do like The Raconteurs and Choheed and Cambria. I agree with your point on the grunge sound and Spoonman but it seems like if I am in my car that doesn't have XM then I really only have a choice of pop and hip hop and country which I will take over the hip hop and pop. Hootie and the Blowfish were horrible...sorry to all you hootie lovers out there. I think STP, Pearl Jam, and GNR are bands that you still remember 15 years later but some of the new groups sound so much alike that it makes you wonder if any of these groups will be memorable 15 years from now, not that there weren't bands in the 90's that didn't all sound alike. Maybe I am out of touch but I don't know where the newer sound is...you know when you hear a group and you are like holy crap I have never heard anything like that before. I hate to say it but nothing new has grabbed me the way the hearing Pearl Jam and Nirvana for the first time did, holy shit I am stuck in the early 90's. It's hard to explain, I used to be very open with my musical tastes but it takes a lot for me to want to download anyone's entire "album" these days. :blink:

wow casey, thanks for the memories. i saw that show in toronto, exhibition stadium, summer august 8 1993. pearl jam, sound garden, blues traveler and neil young. fucking insane and the encore was the same as the video except i was 4 rows deep from the stage and it sounded so much better. long live neil (and chris cornell.):thumbup:
