View Full Version : Why are dumb "fashionable" clothes so expensive?

Here’s something that has been giving me some sand in the asscrack for a while now. Why are clothes so expensive now? And why are they so expensive when they are mostly crap anyway? Also, what constitutes what is fashionable and what isn’t?
One thing that people ask me recently is my affection with Affliction. In droves, people come up to me and go “you handsome finely dressed sexy beast, how come you don’t try other fashions if you are into Affliction”. Well these self-important fashion whores can go fuck themselves because I don’t buy clothes for the fashion; I buy them for the comfort and my own liking. Let me address the reasons why I enjoy Affliction clothing so much.
Affliction shirts are really comfortable, soft, and fit. I'm 5'9 and 130. The problem with most shirts (I could wear small, but it chocks the neck) is that they are so wide in the back you can fit two people in them. I could put the shirt over my knees if I'm sitting down. Whenever I wear a long sleeve button up, I have to get a slim fit cause the back is huge. I'm glad that a clothing company finally made something that helps out skinny guys. Sure, it’s a little expensive (I only spend $45 on them and always haggle) but the comfort makes up for it. Also, they happen to look really cool, and I’m a UFC fan.
Even with my jeans, I’ve only spent about $60 to buy a nice pair, and those aren’t even my favorite pair. My favorite pair is jeans is from Kohls; a nice Buffalo pair that is 2% spandex. So they are loose around the waist, tight on the legs, but give me the most comfort and I can still give me high kick.
But what is the point of clothes being anything more then that? I’ll show you what I mean. I went to the Diesel shop today to look for some new threads and see what constitutes a “fashionable male”. Personally, I believe that Diesel makes the best shoes/sneakers ever, so I decided to try their clothing. After talking to a very gay guy about what’s the latest look and to let me try it on, this was the result:
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/8659/0902081540bi8.jpg
Jacket : $100
Shirt: $80
Jeans: $190
So how or why does this constitute a fashionable male? It’s ugly and expensive. I could buy almost the exact same outfit at Steve and Barrys for $50 and look just as ridiculous. Shirts I almost understand why they are so expensive because it’s the first thing you generally notice a person wearing, but why are jeans so expensive? Do people really look and judge you on what brand you’re wearing? Like I said, I wear for comfort and these $190 better have dispensed milk and cookies and before I would buy them.
tl;dr – why are stupid clothes so much money?

They are that expensive to price ham & eggers like you out of the market. Sorry to be the one to tell you.

Congratulations.

I generally buy nicer clothes, and its not foolish. Certain brands fit better, last longer and drape better. Every brand does not fit every person the same way, however. I have a pair of Seven for all Mankind jeans that were $180. I've had them for 4 years and they look exactly the same as when I bought them. The CK Jeans and Express Jeans I bought last year are already stretched out, ripping and faded. I've stopped buying other brands because they'll just look shittier on me and I'll have to replace them sooner.
BCBG happens to fit me very well, so I buy shitloads of dresses and shirts from them on sale. They're expensive but their stuff, again, lasts and drapes well.
The idiots are the ones who buy simply for the name and not the other reasons. Diesel is horrific quality. I find Rock Republics to be shitty quality. Armani Exchange is shitty.

Well for me, Diesel makes awesome sneakers. A pair lasts me 3 years. Buffalo is my choice of jeans. Just looks and feels the best. Affliction makes the best shirts for a skinny guy. Very soft. A lot of brands fade or feel like sandpaper after a few washes, Affliction holds up.

this reeks of a re-posted thread.
BTW nothing you mentioned in the post was expensive. the shirt, jacket and jeans were all normal priced. there are things cheaper and more expensive, but i would say all those prices are about average

None yet. I wanted to try and have a real convo on here before bringing it to other boards and having the usual "go pee on your feet lulz" comments that normally ensue. I could post it on the wrestling/VG game boards but I don't think many of the members weigh under 300 pounds.

I will say that I've never paid $190 for a pair of jeans, but that just could be because I'm old.

Am I crazy then for thinking $190 is ridiculous for a pair of black jeans? I can go to any Kohls or Macys and get a slim fit, boot cut pair for $40.
Who seriously buys this stuff? Maybe it's Manhattan?
I don't get it.

the jeans were on the expensive side, but most department stores jeans are around 120 or so. i was at bloomingdales a couple of months ago and 2 pair of jeans i picked up were over 250 bucks

I also think that Ed Hardy clothes REALLY suck. Maybe there's one or two that look good but in general, I think it's ugly looking. A chick from my college was walking around with Ed Hardy flip flops, they cost her (well her boyfriend) $50. Wtf? I bought a pair of Pink Floyd ones for $10 four summers ago and they are still awesome.

People paying too much for clothes are the reason why idiots like Diddy are millionaires. My wardrobe consists entirely of jeans I probably bought at Wal-Mart and metal T-shirts. The only thing I spent a ton of money on are my boots because I have awful caveman feet and would blow my brains out if I had to work all day in cheap shoes. But then again, this is probably one of the reasons (on a VERY long list) of why I will always be alone.

good point. I guess I am just impressed that we can hit new levels of gayness. Bring on the Project Runway threads!
I always thought i was gay, because my wife buys my clothes, and dresses me "nice". But i think it would be much gayer to actually take the time to go and shop for all this stuff. I dress like like a fag because my wife picks my clothes out. I even have a perriwinkle shirt. the alternative would be to actually care

Bingo. 99% of us shouldn't give a shit. Real rich people don't buy expensive brands, they have clothes custom made. So when you own $200 jeans, you're only impressing fellow upper middle class bad consumers.
Looking nice is nothing to be ashamed of. Living beyond your means to do so with gawdy labels is completely shameful

wow...i would never spend anywhere close to that amount of money on clothes. but i'm a slob. i work in a business casual place and if someone doesn't buy me something for my b-day or x-mas, its the same clothes for the following year. $180 for jeans is crazy. i haven't owned a pair of jeans in 10 years. I'm to cheap to out and get any and no one has bought me any. its all kakhis(needed for work), shorts or windpants. and usually a t-shirt or polo. i'd say the average piece of clothes i own is somewhere around $20-$25.
and i've had the same pair of shoes for 2 years plus...4 years the pair before this one.

I honestly don't know how it became popular with the gweedz because where i live i see a lot of jacked up white boys wearing the t-shirts.

I have never heard that before.
Randy creates and designs Xtreme Couture clothing (his gym) and affliction helps with the t-shirts, but I do not believe Randy designs affliction stuff.
Affliction is crap clothing btw.
and jeans for $180 is not bad at all. I am with Missy on this, 7 for all Mankind are some of the best things I own. Very comfortable and almost feel like I am naked, well worth the money. Even if you want to go cheaper, Lucky jeans aren't bad.

There are jeans that are even more pricey and I find them shittier than 7famk. Citizens and True Religions feel like cardboard to me compared to sevens. Rock Republics (which can be like $300) fit as well but fall apart really fast.

True Religions I never felt were okay for a guy to wear, the stitching on the back is so weird.
Citizens not a fan of.
7famk fit the best and last forever.

I have a pair of FUBU jeans I bought about a decade ago and I still wear them regularly. The right front pocket JUST ripped a few months ago, and not even to the point that I can't use it, awsome quality. I think they cost me something like 60 bucks
