Looks like the Google (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080902/ap_on_hi_te/google_browser_8) is releasing their own web browser tomorrow. I wonder if it will be better than Firefox?

google was firefox's biggest pusher, now they're going with some closed-source alternative. Just push FF harder.

and the first line here (http://www.slate.com/id/2199080/) says it's open-source.

I'm sure you've already heard of it but IE Tab for firefox allows you to browse those sites in IE within your firefox browser. At anytime you can just click the firefox tab to toggle between FF and IE.

it doesn't work for a few places, still crashes. so i use ff to open in external application. one is a live scoring for a fantasy baseball league (sporting news). i think target is the other, which is weird.

It's not Target.

Target's site runs fine in FireFox.

I read the little Google comic book announcing it. The memory management and multiprocessing alone make me excited.

And it's being released today for Windows, but it won't be windows only.

Did you guys see the piece about Google on CBS Sunday Morning?

Their employees get picked up everyday for work, and brought home, at whatever times they choose--for free. Get gourmet breakfast, lunch and dinner spreads--for free. Are encouraged to play games, swim, basketball, tennis, etc, and sleep at work! Have full service babycare (not free, but still reasonable rates). This is for ALL employees.

I think Ive found my retirement job.

They admitted that all the perks were really just a bribe to make people hang out at work longer, interact with eachother more, and discuss business... but I think it makes good biz sense and the employees (they showed) seemed gratified.

Yes yes, chrome is potentially another great open source app from google, but the thing that has me waiting is Android. I have a version of it (the 0.9 sdk) working on my windows mobile phone (htc Touch). From what I have seen so far it is going to be the best thing to happen to the phone since color screens. Google Maps will have street view on the phone. There will be an app store similar to Apple's, and with the source code readily available (and a app development contest that just finished) there are plenty of apps now.

The HTC Dream is going to be the first fully operational google phone and its going to be released on T-mobile next month. As long as you can get a linux kernel on your phone (you can on win mobile) you will be able to port android.

And yes, i would bet that Chrome Mobile will kick the shit out of IE mobile.

I just learned that this site has ads. I'm not sure I can post here anymore.

I'm not really liking it. The bookmarks suck, and the minimalist stuff seems too minimalist, and for some reason the task bar at the bottom (which I have set to auto-hide) doesn't show up over the Chrome window, which sucks because I juggle windows.

It is really fast, but I'm going to need some good add ons like Ad Block before I totally switch from Firefox. Plus I'm having trouble figuring out the task bar. I don't even see how to add an icon to take me to "home".

Edit: And I can't push the wheel on my mouse to move up and down a page quickly.

The more I try it, the more I'm disappointed. I love how fast it is and how clean it looks, but I had almost forgotten that the internet had so many ads. I just tried clearing the history, and it left a few windows up there. That's annoying, because one of them is a Firefox add ons page, which is useless to me when using Chrome.

I figured out the "Home" option, but it's not opening windows in new tabs. And I have it set to ask me if I want to save passwords, and it's not. GRRRR!!!

they designed it to be efficient in javascript and apparently it is:

i don't like the fact that you have no choice where you want to install the application. i like to keep all of my apps neat and tidy in my Program Files folder, not hidden layers down in C:\Documents and Settings\...\Google\Chrome\Application\.

Yeah, I'm using it right now, and even with my Gmail account, it's slower then IE. I usually attach messages like my timecard to an email, send it to my supervisor, and hit send and forget about it.

I did it with this Chrome browser and it didn't hang up, but it did give me a "still working" sign above the webpage. Usually I just hit send after attaching the file, and it's on its way.

But this is the first time I'm using it, overall, it's okay. I'll beat it apart over the weekend.

I made it crash once by starting 2 videos playing simultaneously. It also had issues loading a few pics on various websites and I could not find why although they loaded when I hit reload.

I have used FF since 0.8 and I too have forgot how many ads are on the net, damn!

Seems like a good beta version. I tried firefox for a day and ditched it for IE, which I've always used since the 90's. I'm just used to it, that's all. Chrome is working well so far, and although I haven't used it yet, the incognito window feature is pretty cool. When in incognito mode, you can go to a porn site, for example, and your tracks don't show up in browser history, cookies, etc. that you may forget to clear before your wife finds them....

All 3 times I installed it on their computers it opens to 2 tabs when you open the browser. The first tab says sign in and then the next tab is the actual home page. I have never had this on chrome on my computers. Even if im not logged into a google account I have never had this before. Is there a way to turn it off? I have looked through the settings and nothing shows up that says "only open homepage or 1 tab" etc.

Also, does anyone know how to create a default email? When I click on an icon to send an email I want my email (webmail) to open so I dont have to copy the outgoing email address and then past it. One of the only things I liked about IE was that I could download my email providers toolbar and this would do all that for me. With chrome you cant get toolbars except the bookmark that comes with chrome!

open email links in gmail through chrome (http://www.pcworld.com/article/250877/chrome_now_able_to_open_email_links_in_gmail.html)

the two home screens usually just start when you first start the browser. If you set an actual home page, it should go away.

Thats what I thought but every time I X the chrome out and click to re-open it still opens 2 tabs. I will try it myself later on 1 of my computers and then re-install it and see if it still happens.

I will also try that email link you posted. Thanks!!!

ok, so the unanswered question is, which is better, firefox or chrome?

I have them both on my toolbar, and whichever one I happen to click on, I use it until something about it pisses me off. Chrome pisses me in many small ways, Firefox pisses me off massively but infrequently.

I use both as well. Some sites work better on one than the other. Most are very similar. I never go to rf.net in Firefox, for instance.

Fuck you Chrome, I don't want you to autoplay that MP3. Give me options. You cunt.

You need the fastest browser you can to keep up with the torrent of posts that come in to this site.

In almost every category Chrome, but Firefox is re-catching up... hopefully fast enough for them that they don't become the next Netscape, well I guess so they don't become the next THEM really. (Mozilla was the codename for Netscape and Firefox was in fact built by Netscape as the replacement for Netscape Navigator).
