Printers of both the laser and inkjet variety are notorious not just for requiring expensive replacement cartridges but for trying to get you to replace them well before you need to. It's epidemic in the industry, to the point where class action lawsuits have filed against Epson and Hewlett-Packard over the trickery. i have a HP Design Jet 4500. Each ink cartridge runs around a hundred bucks or more. It does that all the time. I find that if i just take the "empty" cartridge out and put it back in I can get up to another couple weeks use out of it. Son of bitches.

with newer ink jets they are incorporating chips in the cartridges, so the printer will recognize cartridges that run to depletion in them, preventing you from using refill kits.

This is exactly why you'll find a Gregorian Monk in my storm cellar transcribing every single key stroke I make..
Their chants can be a little louder then your standard home printer but they fit well in a small space and the only maintenance they need is a fresh bathrobe and some wine.. :D
