A New York man donated a winning lottery ticket, worth $3 million, to a church (http://www.wsmv.com/money/17315671/detail.html?rss=nash&psp=news#-).

I consider myself a good person, but I know that I could never do anything close to this.

Anyone out there feeling generous ?

Fuck no. Unless he was was rich and didn't need the money anyway, but why is he playing lotto in the first place.

I could see donating some money (tax break and all) but 3 million? That's life-changing money.

That's the first thing I thought, but the uber-rich usually aren't playing the numbers.

Maybe we're just cynical fucks, Matty.

A church? Ew. How about a good charity?

ChrisTheCop
08-29-2008, 04:57 PM
And the church says they will now give some of the money to other charities.

What a waste.

Also--if this guy truly wanted to be "anonymous" he couldve just left it in the collection plate.

Not only am I sure he would according to her, but I would also love nothing more than to hear her explanation of why.

You'd be surprised. People who are comfortable financially can and do play the lottery. I've worked in jobs where I got megamillions tickets for people who made low-to-mid six figure salaries. But that's only when the jackpot got really really big.

A long time ago, a McDonald's Monopoly piece for 1 million was anonymously donated to a kid's hospital in boston. The rumor was that it was a famous entertainer with ties to Boston. I know who - who it is, but that's a story for another day.

I wouldn't give won dough to a church, but I would to something like Farm Sanctuary or the local animal shelter. Actually my husband and I have had arguments about this, where I said if I won a bunch of money I'd give at least half of it away and he thought I was ridiculous. To avoid a big fat fight I just don't play the lottery.

This may seem new-agey, but a nation of people being good in consistent, small ways far outweighs one person donating a big wad.

Another thing this story makes me think of is the actual effect of someone winning such a huge chunk of money, because of what Matty said about "life-changing" money. I honestly don't think that ridiculous amounts of money can bring happiness. Sure, breaking free of financial bondage is a huge, positive change. But being filthy rich to me seems miserable. It's similar to the flawed concept of heaven. With no reference or scale, life loses meaning and value rapidly. Maybe I'm just a masochist, but you have to feel pain to understand pleasure.

Fuck the church.
If I didn't need the money, I'd donate it to my savings.

I'd keep 2 million and dole 1 million to

The Cancer Society
The National Arbor Day Foundation
The ASPCA

And a whole lot of homeless shelters in the tri-state area.

I'd invest the 2 mil then live off the interest and give annually.

Would I still work? Only because I like where I'm working right now. The people are fun and the work is easy.

I'd give it to young women working their way through school or trying to support their kids.

Hahaha! Now that's funny..

Personally, I don't need anymore money, $3 million wouldn't change one single thing in my life but I certainly wouldn't give it to the richest business in the universe..

I think I would split it between my 6 neediest friends..I have some people in my lfe that are just barely eeking by and I KNOW it would make a difference in their lives..

AJ, thanks for the pic.
Jony, thanks for reposting it, so once I finished staring at AJ's I could stare at yours.

But JonyRotn, if by the richest business in the universe, you didnt mean hookers or hoofers,
but "the church", it is my interpretation that this is not a catholic church, but a small community, protestant church. Theyre not the evil empire. I think it's a nice gesture.

I wouldnt do it. But then, I'm not that nice.

Because you'll hurt the little babies.
You can't do that.

Would absolutely not give it to a church, but im down with giving some of it up to an organization that actually needs it and safely investing most of the rest.

Also id love to blow 30k in one nite on something ridiculously stupid.

Yeah..I just had this image of like, the Pope standing in line at the credit union and then asking to borrow a pen so he could endorse the back of this check and then wispering to the teller,"Could you please deposit this into my 401K account.."..Then like, folding up the reciept and tucking it into the inside pocket of his long red rope as he walks out of the bank mumbling something in German..
Sorry, I may have rushed to judgment..:innocent:
