What's add-ons do you use ? I currently have 20 with no noticeable slow down. I won't list all of them , but here are 5 I couldn't do without .
Adblock Plus - I use the EasyElement + EasyList filter
Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper - Blocks things on a website that take up screen space. See the RonFez.net banner at the top of this page ? I don't .
All-in-One Gestures - Customizable mouse gestures. I can never remember keyboard shortcuts . It's easier for me to use the mouse.
Sage-Too - A simple RSS reader. I just like the way it looks and how simple it is to use.
Tab Mix Plus - All things tab related. It also has a better session manager than the default Firefox one .

I should have said this in my first post, but you should always back up your profile before trying a new add on. Some add ons don't work well with others , and sometimes uninstalling them won't fix the problem. Get the FEBE extension and back up the full profile before trying something new .

I have several add ons, but the best and most crucial so far are:
Foxmarks - anyone who has logged on firefox and suddenly found that ALL their bookmarks have dissapeared can relate to how important this is. It backs up your bookmarks and makes them available to any computer you use firefox on
Fire-FTP - i use FTP a lot and this is the simplest free client out there.
Woot Watcher - If you share my Woot OCD...GET THIS!!! It is great for the occasional Woot-Off
Logmein - not officially a firefox add on, but to me it is crucial. Its one of those free remote desktop apps. I use it to remotely control my home PC. Great for moving files around and setting up downloads from the house. Using this along with my FTP server and Fire FTP gives me complete access to my home files anywhere.

The problem with Stumble Upon is that you never know what site it will take you to. It may have changed since I last used it, but it seems like a security risk to me .

I don't know much about how you can get hacked, but can't you get viruses or spyware from just visiting a site ? I'm a little paranoid about it because I don't really understand how it works.

I use fire gestures a ton, and it's by far my favorite application to use. ONce you get to use it, I've found that it really steamlines your web surfing and it makes a ton of stuff.

Are you using Firefox 3 ? Try starting it in safe mode and disable all ad-ons . It may be a conflict with one of them.
