Jesus...it's been 18 years? I saw one of his last shows before his death. He opened up for Jeff Beck at the old Capital Centre. After he played a stellar set of his own, he joined Beck for a blistering encore of "I'm Going Down" that must have lasted 10 minutes. That was one of the greatest guitar duels I ever heard.

You lucky Bastard.
I wish I could implant that memory into my own brain.

I got to see Stevie at Merriweather with the Thunderirds opening up the show. It was amazing. For encore Jimmy and Stevie played a double neck together very cool.

I saw him twice with my dad. I was certainly a fan, but as young as I was I couldn't possibly appreciate the significance of the moment. R.I.P.

I too was fortunate to see him 2 times very close together just before he died. His guitar work mesmerized me. To this day I love watching anyone play guitar with their head thrown back and eyes closed. its like the music is flowing directly through them.

And he was freshly clean and sober and making his best music when he died. If he was still alive today, he would've changed music forever.

Hard to believe that it has been 18 years. I still remember the early news reports on MTV (when the channel was still relevant); they initially thought that Eric Clapton might be dead because they didn't know who was in the helicopter.

Talk about a roller coaster of emotion when they said Clapton was alive but a few moments later revealed that Stevie Ray Vaughn was dead. A seriously WTF moment.

Gone too soon:

Rest in peace, rest in peace.

I've been listening to Texas Flood a lot lately.

I swore 2 weeks ago that I'd write a screenplay that included some idle chit chat with a bartender cleaning up at 2:15 am that ended in her apartment bedroom - "Lenny" in the background smoothing out a rough night for everyone.

I got into SRV pretty late, mostly driving around in my car when I first got my license ('91) & there was nothing in the world better than a long drive & some loud music. I played the shit out of the cassette tape of the "In the Beginning" Live set when it came out in '92 or '93.

Very sad day. R.I.P., SRV.

Razorboy has my favorite SRV tune in his post, but since there's so much to choose from here's a little something from that 1980 Live show in Austin...

It's probably true. I saw him in his partying days and I saw him in his sober days. The music just flowed out of him, he was always good--great, and the best at what he did--there was, is, no one better.

One of my best memories of SRV besides seeing him in the flesh, was seeing his Live at El Mocambo video. He played the shit out of Third Stone From the Sun; he had his strat on the ground, was stepping on it with his whole body, grabbed the whammy bar, and started hopping around, getting crazy feedback. Awesome

Just happened to find the El Mocambo footage:

When that tour played Madison Square Garden, I was at the Benson & Hedges Blues Festival held at the Beacon Theatre that very same night. What a lineup - John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Buddy Guy and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. After SRV finished his set at the Garden he came down and encored several songs with the T-Birds.

It was amazing.

I still remember how I heard about him dying just before I was about to go on a week's vacation. Such brilliant music, and such a huge loss.
