Two self-anointed "grammar vigilantes" who toured the nation removing typos from public signs have been banned from national parks after vandalizing a historic marker at the Grand Canyon. (http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2008/08/22/20080822grammarcops0822.html)

According to court records, Deck and Herson toured the United States from March to May, wiping out errors on government and private signs. On March 28, while at Desert View Watchtower on the South Rim, they used a white-out product and a permanent marker to deface a sign painted more than 60 years ago by artist Mary Colter. The sign, a National Historic Landmark, was considered unique and irreplaceable, according to Sandy Raynor, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix.

I understand where these guys are coming from... but they're dicks. First of all, if it's an old, old sign, the grammar and spelling would be different from what we use today, right? Unfortunately the article doesn't go into great detail about the sign.

 I fight the urge to do this myself. My favorite is the improper use of quotation marks...

The best "pizza" in New Jersey! :wallbash:

But yeah, they did go too far.

You want to really punish these guys? Make them read official government e-mails and documents. I'm amazed some of these people graduated from elementary school.

I've always wanted to do this to the shitty Spanish translations you find on bilingual signs at theme parks and stuff. Just awful.

The improper use of quotation marks is annoying, but the one that gets my knickers in a twist is the improper use of the apostrophe.

I must admit, I've been tempted to correct that on more than one occasion. Although I am a great deal more laid back than these folks.

(I have done this at work; someone labeled the drawer for official company stationery as "stationary" ... I crossed it out and wrote the correct word. I was tempted to write "yes, we know it doesn't move, but is it writing paper?")

Wouldn't that constitute cruel and unusual punishment?

(If we're all for torture, however, visit my sister's MySpace page. Somewhere between the spelling and the grammar mistakes lie the word-usage errors ... "where" for "were" ... "were" for "we're" ... "your" for "you're" ... etc. :wallbash:)

Not really. It's also to show that even the stupid can't get fired. Like the one woman I worked with who sent a Directorate-wide e-mail (including to the Admiral) that was full of grammatical and spelling errors and was actually signed "Peace Out".

I am NOT making that up.

What also irritates me are the people at work sending professional emails in Comic Sans, size 18, purple font.

Comic Sans is one of the only fonts where you can't mistake an "l" for a "1."

I don't mind Comic Sans half so much as I mind someone who uses backgrounds or "stationery" for their e-mails. Fonts don't slow the system down; "stationery" does.

I read an article on this and it said they got rid of an apostrophe and added a comma.

It also called them "Two Kerouacs armed with sharpies and righteous indignation" or some shit like that. What an insult to Kerouac.

The infer vs. imply thing really gets my blood a-boilin'.

I think I even started a thread about it. Earl is the worst and still hasn't learned the correct usage.

How about people who misuse the word "ironic" or "ironically" ?

I've heard so many people say "ironically" when they meant "conicidentally." (I blame Alanis.)

I get memos and faxes at work that constantly have misspellings and grammatical errors. It drives me crazy when I think these people are my supervisors. For god's sake use the damn spellcheck!

Even then, they'd probably benefit from a once-over with a pencil ... spellcheck doesn't check usage errors.
