View Full Version : Shot my first gun.

Mossberg 535 12 gauge shotgun.
Shot about 25 turkey shot rounds at 25 yards and 5 slugs at 65 yards with a rifled barrel.
My shoulder is in a bit of pain right now, the slugs had quite the kickback for someone who has never shot anything bigger than a bb gun. With one round I punched myself in my face as the kickback threw my hand on the gun into my nose. Teared up a little bit, outdoorsman uncle laughed at me. Used iron sights and a scope.
Pretty decent stuff. Looking forward to going out again next week and learning how to do this a little better and to hopefully stop flinching a half a second before I pull the trigger each time.
Only a few months until deer season, I need to get my practice in.

If you liked it that much...you might want to try this place in Ringwood, NJ: http://thundermt.com/Index2.html
They have rentals, instruction and trap shooting. It's a lot more fun than just still target practice.
Maybe one day you'll be as good as this guy:

Isn't it great? Now I want to go shooting again, maybe I'll take the concealed test finally. I have a handgun but want a shotgun too. Gotta love Texas!

Nice!
Hehe, shooting 12ga. slugs is playing with the big boys. If it was a pump gun you got quite a little kick off that. I can only shoot a dozen or so before I have to tap out.
Shoot some trap if you can get a chance. Man, it's a hoot.

I love hunting. I've got the Benello Nova pump, going to upgrade to a Super Black Eagle II. Going to try Javelina pistol hunting this fall with either my Browning 9mm or Colt 1911. Shooting is great fun as long as you stay safe.
I miss shooting the Glock.

Did you like your glock? My next gun purchase will be either a Glock or a Springfield XD. I don't have any of the "plastic" guns yet but would like to get one because of the expansion capabilities they have with the front rail.

I don't own a glock, but shot many. Reliable good gun. My brother in law usually carries his 9mm. I carry a Kimber 45. It's an absolutely beautiful gun. I'm thinking about getting an AR-15, before i can't.

I've been thinking about an AR as well, although I don't know about dropping that much money on one. They are fun as hell to shoot though.

You got that right. My previous stated brother in law is a dr, so he has money to burn. He has two AR's, and very fun to shoot. Right now i can't see dropping that much, but who knows, maybe i find some extra cash somewhere.

I don't own one...yet. But it's a good weapon. It's not "plastic" per se because only the handle is made of composites.

Yup, 12 gauge pump.

Just not the turkey version, got the field.
It shoots 3-1/2" shells too, which is something not even my uncle has fired and he's been doing this for decades. He's pretty excited to see how big of a punch those are going to throw at him.

Here's a tip. If you decide to shoot a handgun, make sure to always hold it sideways with one hand.

Congrats! Despite the stigma attached to guns, target shooting is one of the most self-challenging and rewarding hobbies, and does not make you a gun nut. A 12 gauge is a great way to get into shooting as it introduces you to big recoil, but also lets you get away with beginner accuracy without being completely frustrated. Each style of firearm has it's own challenges.
A decent .22 rifle, semi-auto or not, can be hours of cheap, quiet, and non-bruising fun.
I find that high-power rifles are the least fun at the range, due to the expense of rounds, but they are still fun if you have some decent reactive targets. I buy 1/2" aluminum plate scraps from the local salvage yard and see what different rounds do to it. There's nothing like examining the "melted" hole that a .270 leaves in that plate at 50 yards to make you respect proper handling and safety.
Shooting handguns is really where it's at. Despite the rising cost of ammunition, dropping $200 bucks on rounds and shooting paper for an hour or two is a great time. I don't think any other type of firearm challenges you to improve and maintain your technique like a handgun. SIG Sauer makes beautiful guns. Glocks may be ugly, but they are definitely an affordable workhorse of a gun. H&K's USP and P2000 are great "plastic" guns too. I haven't shot an XD, but my wife has and she didn't like it much. For a 1911, Kimber seems to be the most popular, but I haven't shot any.
It sounds like you have an Uncle who knows his stuff, but the value and necessity of safety and technique training can never be overstated. It is the people who never get trained to handle weapons properly, or those who get complacent in their safe handling, that end up hurting people. Don't make that mistake.

people mock it because the gang-types do it, but that's a very legitimate technique.

Where do they teach this as a legitimate shooting method? Two hands, shooting hand cradled in the other palm is the way to go.

obviously, two-handed is better. but for one-handed, the twist tightens up the forearm muscle without actually having to clench the muscle. i learned it in college from our rifle coach.

Significantly better than gangsta-style, but Isosceles or Weaver, or their modifications, are the standard. The rule of thumb is to cover as much surface of the grip as you can with both hands. Generally this means the "heels" of your hand are lined up in a 45 degree angle to the back of the grip.
With a semi-auto, the thumb of the support hand is lined up below the thumb of the strong hand, pointed almost straight forward along the support side of the frame, keeping below the slide.
With a revolver, I believe the support thumb should cross over the strong thumg across the back of the grip, below the hammer's action.

That's what I meant. I just didn't go into that much detail. I use the method they taught me in the military. To be honest though, I've never fired a revolver, so I don't really know how I hold one. Just semi auto.

For one-handed shooting, the most accurate stance is to place your support hand in a fist, tight against your sternum. Your strong arm should be fully extended, elbow locked, with your cheek welded to your raised shoulder, looking down the straight line of your arm and the gun's sights. Your shoulders and feet should be in line with the target. With the gun rotated 90 degrees, there is no way to accurately aim the weapon.
