Actually, actor wise, that could work.

I'm inclined to agree, especially since there isn't even a treatment yet. But if this was a few years ago, when a lot of biopics were getting made, maybe.
Although, Crowe seems to go at some more esoteric projects. Interest in stand ups might rekindle with the new Apatow movie, and I'm sure people will want to do stuff about Carlin.
I'd like to see it, anyway.

"I have another project based on the life of comedian Bill Hicks, which is going from treatment to draft stage with Kiwi writer Mark Staufer.
Since they started writing it, that is a promising step.

I'd love it, but its very hard to do a good biopic about a comedian. The audience laughing at the jokes always seem so unnatural. I still think the Andy Kaufman bio was one of the worst things ever (with a really off the mark Jim Carrey performance)

Dustin Hoffman in Lenny has always bugged me.

i thought that one was pretty good. But if you try to find the biopics (i think straight to tv) of people like John Belushi or Gildna Radner..its so painful. I guess if you are an actor its hard to recreate things that were originally funny in real life
You know which was a really really weird comedians biopic though? Did anyone see the Geoffrey Rush as Peter Sellers movie? I think it was a good movie, but they just portrayed Peter Sellers as the biggest asshole piece-of-shit. It was weird to me that they would take a beloved dead guy and make him so horrible for a movie (even if its true)

Yeah, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers was a great film.
They did portray him as quite the ass.
But aren't most "geniuses" stereotypically difficult?
It didn't change my opinion of him.

oh I understand he was difficult...but he wasn't so horrible. Like he didn't kill and rape children or anything, he was just a prick. The film was fine, I just felt in reflection that it was kinda a dick thing to do to make a movie about someone who was difficult, but portray him as just this asshole monster. Like, I felt bad for his surviving family
Alot of entertainment biopics always have something that makes me cringe. When its at the moment of the thing the performer is most famous for, the other person say the project casually but with a pause beforehand.
Like, in the Peter Sellars movie, he can say to Blake Edwards "whats do you plan on calling this fucking movie you want me to star in" and Blake Edwards goes "Its going to be called...(pause)...The Pink Panther". Or in the Gildna Radner biopic shes talking to Lorne Michaels , "this show sounds crazy, did you even give it a name?" and Lorne Michaels goes "I was thinking of calling it...(pause)...Saturday Night Live". UGGGGH. Its so cringey

If the film were realistic, most of the American audiences wouldn't be laughing.

bill hicks came first. the TOOL song is in tribute to bill hicks, as was the whole album. The sound clip of "drugs have done some good things..all your favorite musicians..realllllllllllllllly fucking high" on "Third Eye" is Bill Hicks

Love and respect Hicks, but I don't see this flick doing terribly well or even being that good. As great as he was, is his life really something that would be anything but a boring film? Outside of Lenny, films about comedians seem like a bad idea. Pryor is about the only guy I can think of where a film about him would be actually interesting.
I say take the money to make this film and release more of Hicks' shows on CD and DVD instead.

Exactly. Aenema has got to be the best song on the album, tribute wise.
I'm kind of mixed on this movie.
I wanna see it, because I absolutely love Bill Hicks. But this is the exact kind of thing he would hate.

I kind of agree, although I didn't like "Lenny" that much, and Pryor covered his own life in "Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling", which I didn't like so much either. Unless I'm missing some bits of Hicks' Bio, there doesn't seem to be a lot to hang your hat on for a movie, I'd hate for it to be like Man on the Moon where it just turns into mostly just another person re-creating his greatest bits.

Hicks wouldn't even have that. Kaufman at least had some insane moments and a pretty gonzo career to string the movie along...Hicks basically became a great comedian, toured, and then died.
I don't really consider Pryor as having had a movie made about him. The man was candid about his faults, but I think it takes a degree of removal for a "warts and all" view to be taken of someone's life.
I'm kind of surprised at the dislike for Lenny. I caught it late one night a few years ago and was really impressed. I thought the story was really tragic and gripping and Hoffman did a great job. That, and I'm a sucker for well done splitscreen films.

Well, not sure that's entirely true. He started stand up at a really young age, experimented with all sorts of fucked up drugs, had a HUGE falling out with David Letterman, and vehemently (sp?) stood by the use of drugs while being sober. That's all pretty cool shit. I heard a story when I was first getting into Hicks that he did a show drunk, and pissed off some Vetrans. They caught up with him after the show and broke some of his ribs.
Again, I don't think it should be a movie, but if it was, there would be some substance.

It's cool, but it's a boring fucking movie. The man's bits about his drug use are genius, but serious/self-important movies about people taking drugs tend to be either boring as fuck or completely incoherrent. Maybe if they somehow bust down the 4th wall and play with history a la American Splendor or 24 Hour Party People you could make things more interesting and end up with a left of center flick that's much more Hicksian than a straight up biopic.
And shit, speaking of AS, falling out or making a scene on Letterman's show is hack in these movies now. We saw Pekar doing it...and Kaufman...now Hicks? WEEEE-WEEEEE-WEEEEEEEEE-BORING.

Did anyone read 'American Scream' or whatever the Hicks biography was called?
