My niece is notorious for not doing any computer updates, virus scans or any maintenance on her computers. She claims it is way too time consuming, so she doesnt bother. But she complains about virus issues too, so go figure. Whenever she lets me use her computer, I will do an update for her and try and do a scan for virus's.
But because her system is never updated and corrupt, any attempt to do this seems to cause major problems.
I talked her into getting a Mac and she got a real expensive Mac Book Pro and I was on it today and did a software update and saw that she needed like 10 critical updates. So I did it and it took a long time and of course needed a reboot, and when it was done, the fucking thing would not come back on no matter what I did. It is like its dead.
Now, I am the asshole who broke her computer! "If you didn't touch it, it wouldn't be broke!"
She said she will bring it somewhere tomorrow to see if they can fix it, but I feel like shit, even though I seriously doubt that it was anything I did, but I believe it was related to the update and reboot. It was a strange update too, it required me to hold down the power button until if flashed and make sure it was connected with the power cord instead of the battery.
Now, if and when this gets fixed, I doubt she will ever do an update again.
Meanwhile, if you just did them once a week or whatever, it would be so much easier than ten at once!

moral of the story:

do not be in her business until she asks you. cause when she comes to you and it is already broken, even if you fuck up it does not matter. when you break something that is working, even though it is not working as good as you think it should, you are going to catch shit for it

I thought all these Mac geeks are always saying it's so perfect. So much for that.

depending on how long it's been since the earliest critical update, my previous experience with Macs is do the critical stuff as soon as possible and there will be no problems, memory should not be an issue with the Mac Book Pros. I've never heard of this, there could be a number of things she could of been neglecting.

You are right JPM, and I agree Landblast, and Papabear the Mac is really awesome otherwise and I never have any issues with my desktop iMac.
Her brother just called me up and was asking me what I was doing and what it said etc. He said I should have learned my lesson with her and never touch her computer because she bitches about everything, even if you are trying to help..

Dont have a Mac; but that part about holding down the power button, and making sure wall power was on, makes me think you were somehow flashing the BIOS. It could be broken all the way back to the factory.:glurps:

I feel for you though. Murphy's Law just got up and kicked you.
