During Sunday's Yankees radio broadcast, John Sterling called Xavier Nady's home run. The only problem? Cody Ransom was the one who hit the actual home run, and it was his first MLB home run. Welcome to the bigs, kid.

On the other hand -

During Saturday's Yankees television broadcast, Michael Kay posted this question to Al Leiter, after a beautiful panning shot of the sky over Yankee stadium, with a blue sky and white fluffy clouds...

"If you were in an airplane that was high up enough, and you fell out, do you think if you fell through some of those clouds, they'd slow you down enough?"

Welcome to the hell of being a Yankee fan.

I HATE Sterling, but he's not my most hated broadcaster anymore based on that one stupid line from Kay.

Hasn't Sterling done that quite a few times? He's the Dick Vitale of baseball, in the sense the game is just there for him to occasionally stick in one of his stale catch phrases.

I can't believe that New York is stuck with a dude whose act would be considered corny in a "flyover" city.

Sterling has a bombast that I actually like. The problem is, he's paired with Waldman, who is terrible, which makes listening to them insufferable sometimes.

It was much much better when Charley Steiner was Sterling's partnet.

After line, Kay hands down, forever.

I have wondered about these to a-holes for a while. The Yankees have John Sterling who is a freaking laughing stock. Susan Waldman is a freaking Chowd. That Boston accent talking about Yankee baseball is just chilling. In all, NY announcers are the worst. NY sports talk radio is even more terrible. Waaaaaaaaaaa! I wish Vin Scully could live forever.
"Billingsly threw 22 pitches in the first inning and he is up to his hips in alligators here in the second" scully.
"THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE yankees win!" Sterling

He and O'Neill are the only ones that make Kay remotely listenable, because they drill him, him and O'Neill love tooling on Kay.

I just accidentally voted for Kay when I meant to vote for Sterling.

I guess that makes ME the stupid one...

I think Kay is a decent play-by-play man.

I think John Sterling is the worst broadcaster ever to take the mic. Every call is over the top and terrible. He stinks.

But overall, I think NY radio announcers are CLEARLY the best. Outside of Sterling, none of them are homers which every other market is full of.

In football, Bob Papa and Bob Weischusen are two of the best in the sport hands down. Doc Emrick, Howard Rose (2 sports), Kenny Albert and Sam Rosen are all great hockey announcers. Ian Eagle and Marv Albert, and Mike Breen and Gus Johnson for basketball are probably the 4 best in the sport. We're privileged.

I want to die when I go to other cities and hear the blatant homerism and bias and lack of knowledge that I've become accustom to.

I was driving from Albequerque to Santa Fe and herd the John Sterling call of the wrong person homer...I hate him. Sterling calls games like he is on TV. Like you can see what he sees.

I agree Vin Scully was the broadcaster of my childhood and I still listen to him on Dodger radio via XM. The best...And I'm not just saying that cause he went to my highschool...he is, and he still works a solo booth.

The Mets radio and TV presentation smokes the Yankees' in every way, shape, and form. I really enjoy watching Kevin Burkhardt (sp?) and Darling and Hernandez are OUTSTANDING.

That's the problem with the Yankees - they have Ken Singleton, Leiter, O'Neill, Cone (whose voice isn't great but knows his shit) and Flaherty but they are ALL dragged down by Kay.

i do not think singleton is great either, he bores me. Al lieter adds a lot to the games.

david cone looks so creepy when he is in a suit, he needs to be moved to radio

That's how I feel. Kay can have an annoying side and say a few things that bug you... But John Sterling is simply unlistenable. So... SO bad.

Most Yankee fans agree that Sterling is a laughing stock. He's kinda like Harry Caray in that he's out of his mind, but without the lovable qualities that Harry had.

Jay, have you heard the show that replaced Imus in New York? They are sports talk, but a little more refreshing than the standard sport-geek shit that you usually hear on WFAN.

I vote Mohr and Francesa on the FAN!

I'm torn here. I realize Sterling can be bat-shit insane and even a complete joke at times, but he understands the game of baseball. As far as situational stuff and how to manage a game he's fairly on point. Michael kay knows more about sports, so technically in the sports world that would make him "smarter" then Sterling. kay does say some dumbass shit during broadcasts but i honestly believe it to be out of boredom rather than stupidity. So here's what I'm going to base my decision on: I have personally heard Sterling screw up calls more then kay, so because of that he is dumber.

real talk though i've come to respect both of them over the past few years, truthfully against my will.

I wonder what Thurmon Munson and Corey Lidle would have said.

Jim Kaat was the best guy the Yankees had in the recent past. I had heard that he was forced to resign based on his negative comments about Yankees management. Don't know if that is true or not, but Kaat knew his stuff and his stories were usually very interesting.

Yeah, I think pretty much that's what both of them said.

Especially since Thurman burned to death.

I thought he quit because he was close to retirement age (He's 67 now) and his wife got sick. (She passed away, sadly...)

EDIT: He works a reduced schedule for Turner's Sunday Baseball. So maybe he PO'ed Yankee Management does have some credence, but he was scheuled to throw out the first pitch for the last game he called with the Yankees.

Sterling is an immeasurable ham who's over the top calls can be shameful, and he's the #1 ad whore on Earth (even though it's not his fault, he's not selling a hook for every pitch, but just gives me douche chills delivering them. Tuned in while driving for the 1st time this season last week & caught this gem..."The Blue Jays have their 3-4-5 batters coming up this inning, and that's the meat of the order, brought to you by Thumann's." I may have the sponsor wrong, but you get the point. I almost blacked out from anger/embarrassment. I though the 15th out sponsored by Geico was shameless, I underestimated 880's sales department.

As bad & hammy & douchey as Sterling is, his ridiculousness usually just makes me chuckle & shake my head. When I listen to a TV game & Kay is in the booth, however, the game is ruined for me before Jeter hits into his 2nd double play of the day, before Giambi pops up to 2nd trying to pull an outside pitch into the upper deck with the bases loaded & the 3rd baseman playing behind the 2nd base bag, before the bullpen has a chance to blow a 5 run game & cause Mo to come into a tie game to get 5 outs...which he doesn't do well.

I've missed more Yankee baseball over the last 3 years or so because it's gotten so bad I just mute the TV & turn back to my laptop & look up every so often just to see what the score is because I can't physically or mentally take listening to Kay's fucking absurd comments.

WE KNOW it was you who gave Donnie the nickname Donnie Baseball, not Kirby Pukett, even though that's how Mattingly remembers it.

WE KNOW that Donnie told you that when the wind is rough in The Stadium you follow the HANDLE of the brass bat on top of the American flag in center field to see which way the wind is blowing...Thank God Mattingly didn't get the manager's job, Kay's Mattingly minutea is a bottomless pit.

WE KNOW Andy Pettitte's middle name is Eugene.

WE KNOW, WE KNOW, WE KNOW, we've heard all of your fucking personal baseball clichés 1,000 times apiece...SHUT THE FUCK UP & LET THE GAME FUCKING BREATHE!!

My roommate would come in to the room where I was watching a Yankee game & sit down to catch a few innings with me. Time & time again, Kay would set up one of his little nuggets of baseball knowledge, I would recognize where the story was going & rattle off the next three lines of Kay's upcoming monologue. Ten seconds later Kay would launch into exactly the little piece of what he considered baseball gold I saw coming & by the time I turned back to the TV my roommie would be staring at me in amazement. This went on for the first 15 games or so of the season. After that when I turned back to the TV, he wouldn't be amazed anymore, just chuckling.

In summation....I FUCKING HATE MICHAEL KAY as a TV baseball guy. He & Sterling on the radio had some kind of wonderful, other-worldly simpatico that seemed to keep both of their bullshit to a manageable level, but without the other to keep them in check both are a tough listen. But Kay absolutely ruins a game for me.

The only time I will listen to him now is when Leiter is in the booth because not only is Al very good at giving you baseball knowledge in a way that seems coach-like, instead of condescending the way Kay does, Leiter's disdain for Kay is almost tangible & I keep hoping Al will strangle Kay or throw him out of the booth and onto the net.
