She is someone who you don't really realize how amazing she is until you are kind of forced to think about it - LAST PICTURE SHOW, BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID, "Mary Tyler Moore," YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, HISTORY OF THE WORLD PT 1 all the way up to her brilliant recurring role on "Malcolm in the Middle" she is great. What a fun set she had.

Well...it kinda was...not that I'm smarter than anyone for getting it,
but it's a friar's roast (no caps)... theyre really not there to give their A stuff, theyre there to do hack jokes and make eachother laugh... we just get to watch.
And he was going retro, giving the old fashioned zingers youd hear from Dean Martin or Bob Hope in the old ones, and being painfully embarrased at having to deliver them....

I dunno. I thought it was hilarious. And as you said, different people, different opinions.

if you look at it as someone "who just wanted to see something funny" Norm Fucking bombed horribly

If you look at it as someone who wants to be a standup comic or a great fan of Standup comedy, like me, you would agree that Norm was one of the only funny people on that show, if second only to Norton. But i do wish that Giraldo would actually be as funny as he was on Tough Crowd With Colin Quinn

and to help the guy above me, he probably did hack jokes just because no one thought of it. Originality is almost a key in comedy and by being the only one to do that it made it original. Otherwise its like watching the same jokes over and over again. None of Jokes really made me laugh, but Norm's and Nortons just because Norm sacrificed himself at the idiots cost, just for the fans of standup comedy.

AKA
08-18-2008, 11:45 AM

Because the rest of them are really hacks who think that "cringe" really does always equal "humor" and Norm fucking destroyed them, and they knew they had nothing?

Well, maybe because he just thought of it first.

Out of all the Comedy Central Roasts I've seen (Pam Anderson, William Shatner, Flava Flav, am I forgetting anyone) this one was by far the least entertaining.

To paraphrase the great Cloris Leachman, "Someone punch me in the face so I can see some stars!"

All the roasters (except for Cloris Leachman and Greg Giraldo and Jim Norton) were a bunch of stiffs.

If you ask me the funniest thing he's ever done by far is the monologue he did when he came back to host SNL after being fired. I can't seem to find the clip online, but it's hysterical.

As for the roast, I guess roasts just aren't my thing. Everyone is raving about Cloris Leachman's performance, but I couldn't watch her without getting the feeling she was just reciting jokes that someone else wrote for her.

Gunner S
08-18-2008, 03:23 PM
Norton or Giraldo probably wrote for this Cloris lady. Norton and Vos back in the day wrote for a few of the roasts.

Dane Cook = Hack comic, best selling Comedy album ever - appeals mostly to younger highschool boys and Women

Jim Norton = Comic, HBO special, 12 CD's, Radio show from 6-12. Appeals mostly to standup comics and Big Fans of Standup comedy.

Let me ask you, Who is known more?
Dane Cook

Who is far more respected in terms of standup
Jimmy Norton

Hack comedy is liked by people who are just in for something funny, and this is known by almost every standup comic, and thats why people like Joe Rogan, Jimmy Norton and Doug Stanhope attack people like Dane Cook and larry the cable guy. They sold There Standup comedy soul for the likability of regular cocksuckers

one of my fav jokes he did on snl when he was doing the news, he was talkinga bout the richest girl in the country having a birthday party and he goes "so whats it like at the birthday party of the richest girl in the country? Well...she has two cakes!"

Just finished watching noted event by way of comedy central by way of torrentleech.

My rankins as follows: (Keep in mind I have a bias for normy mak)

# 4 Jim Norton - Fun, but I wish I heard the rotten tomatoes joke.

# 3 Norm Makdo - I loved the top half of his set and especially when he was put on the spot by # 4 then he killed when he reversed the funny with the henry fonda pickin blueberries. wish I heard the real uncut set.

# 2 Jeffery Ross - Just had a tight set, deserves all the credit in the world.

# 1 Gilbert Gottfried - Why, fucker made me laugh my ass off. his dedication to the '90 joke was amazing. whites only and colored tits, c'mon. No one touched it. Every line killed.

Dude! He did the Mr. Subliminal. That shit used to kill me.
I think the reason I liked him the most was, everyone else was trying to be a comedian reading the news.
It always seemed Nealon was a real newcaster, but he was just fucking stupid.
