I used to collect smurfs. I think they were popular around 1983.
There was a warehouse in my area that served as a distribution point for these things... a family member came into quite a few of them overnight as I recall. I used to like the show too.

Smurfs were all the rage when I was in 2nd-3rd grades. I had about 250 of them and gradually lost most of them as we moved several times thru the years. I also had some houses and things for the village. Even had Gargamel and Azrael. I have Boozy Smurf and Nurse Smurfette now, as well as a Boozy Smurf colorform, and I still have all my Smurf stickers in my stickerbook collection (which was also a thing to have back in the day). Aw, I miss my smurfs.

i liked on the show when Bainy-smurf would get all smarmy and say "papa smurf always says..." and the somebody would kick his blue ass...all the way off town limits! i think it reveals a thinly veiled contempt for authority....remember the episode where the smurfs were spreading a disease that turned them angry and purple. they would bite each other on the ass and say 'gnap'. i kid you not...they were biting each others ass. i don't even know what that episode meant.

I think I remember this one. Near the end, Coma Smurf wakes up in Smurf Hospital 28 Smurfs later but nobody is around. He walks around the village yelling "Smuff-lo?" but nobody answers. Eventually he finds the purple Smurfs, runs away, and is saved by a couple of the still blue Smurfs.
Long story short, they run away from the purple Smurfs and hide in a mountain Mushroom until the other Smurfs star Smurfing the island looking for survivors.
That was a good one!

PapaSmurf is a bit of a prick. I guess it's hard being in charge of all those smurfs but still, does he need to be so bossy?
Also, I was always confused about Brainy's gender. I guess he is a he, but I was never quite sure. I think his glasses may have reminded me of Velma from Scoody-Doo and made me think he was a chick. That, and he was a big sissy do-gooder.
Azreal was always my favorite.

I just bought my boys a Smurfs DVD having fond memories of them from my childhood. After about 15 minutes I wanted to Smurf myself in the head. What a shitty show.

An old buddy of mine had an older brother (in his 20's) that had about 100 of the damn figurines. He's owned the only comic book store in town for over 20 years, now.

A couple days back, Alan Cumming told MTV News that director Quentin Tarantino would be playing Papa Smurf’s right-hand man, Brainy, in Columbia Pictures’ big screen adaptation of The Smurfs. But a publicist for the Inglourious Basterds director has denied the filmmaker’s involvement.
But you would assume Cumming would know what he’s talking about considering he’s voicing Gutsy in the film. It’s also not hard to believe that Tarantino would take part in a bad film, as his acting filmography includes Little Nicky, Sukiyaki Western Django, Sleep with Me, and an episode of The Golden Girls.
The film, which is a CGI/live action hybrid, helmed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua) is scheduled to hit theaters on August 3rd 2011. The film stars Neil Patrick Harris as a live-action character who helps the Smurfs, and a voice cast which includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette and Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf. Smurfs: The Movie shoots in April.
Tarantino as Brainy would be perfect.

Its amazing how no one has tried to capitalize on the Smurfs popularity by making remakes, new stories and animation styles, considering how many of the girls who used to watch that show are having kids now. I wonder if there is a reason.

The comic version of that episode had the Smurfs saying "Gnash!" instead of "Gnap!". I wonder why they changed it.
