I'm on a computer that doesn't have AIM, so I decided to download it. That went through very smooth and everything seemed to be fine. When I try to connect though, it says connection failed. My firewall allows it, and I do have access to the internet. How can I get this to work?

That's odd. Just for the heck of it, temporarily turn off your firewall and try again. If it connects, you obviously don't want to keep using it that way, but it will confirm if your firewall is REALLY set up to allow it.

is the computer on the same network as your usual computer? if not, it could be the router's firewall of that computer's network

Go into the AIM prefences and click the button to search thru the different aim servers to find one that works.

Click "My AIM" -> Edit Options -> Edit Preferences
Click the Sign On/Off section on the left side
Click the "Connection" button on that page
Then click "Auto Configure" and it will cycle through servers and ports.

You can also just try some standard internet ports in that section until you get a connection like:
21 (FTP)
23 (telnet)
25 (mail)
80 (web)
119 (mail)
8080 (web alternate)
