I don't get it. I was only able to do 6, because I'm a big pussy. By that result, I should be starting in level 2... which means I start off by doing 7 pushups. Which I can't really do. What the f?

I did this back in 2000 (15 boring days in jail). I knew I could do at least 10, so I'd do just 10. I'd do push ups at least 4 times a day, adding more each time. I'd start off just adding 2 push ups. Again... I didn't do it until I couldn't do anymore. I just did what I set out to do, so I didn't wear my arms and shoulders out. By the end of the second week, 100 was no problem.

ahhdurr
08-07-2008, 09:14 PM

A proper push up requires that the tip of your nose loses contact with the floor.

I'm gonna do pushups tonight just to get an "accurate" initial read, but I know I'm rank 4. I can do 30 no problem but 50 is tough for me.

You do all the pushups you possibly can - then you do one more.... then one more... then one more - the last one you do before collapsing - is ... THE ULTIMATE PUSH-UP.

The ad says they "engage more muscles" and "reduce joint strain". I don't think they make a normal push-up any easier though. I've also noticed you can get more of a stretch (lower) than a normal push-up.

Edit....decided just now not to use them for the challenge. Still in for day 2 on Wednesday.

Cool - I wound up at a total of 59. Those last bunch wound up to be 25 total - but the program mentioned doing the last part "comfortably" - so I didn't really strain too hard ... I could have gotten out another 2 or 3 I'd say - but they'd have been maniacal and red-faced. Anyone training differently?

I'm really curious to know if this routine actually works because I've been doing pushups several times a week as part of several different types of workouts and yet I'm still not able to do many more consecutive pushups than when I started working out six or seven months ago. For months now I basically do them one at a time as a part of my burpee routines, but it totals 100 pushups in, now, six and a half minutes. I do them in sets of 10 as part of the Cindy Circuit once or twice a week for a total of, now, 140 in 20 minutes. Then, about once a week I do clapping pushups, four sets of about 25 to 18.

So I've done a shit-load of pushups in the last six months but I've only increased my non-stop ability from about 25 to about 35 in that time period. So now I'm excited to stick to this routine and see if it really produces the specific results.

If your hands are in different positions during pushups, they work different muscles. Hands by shoulders work the muscles differently than hands by the floating ribs. I don't know anyone who's actually used those handle things, but they can't be all bad, just working the muscles differently from a straight pushup.

And like Yerdaddy, I was curious about this too, which is why I decided to start it. I usually do reps. Even if it doesn't work, still getting good exercise with the reps in the program.

And anyone who still wants to join us, it's a 3 day a week program and we're still in week 1. Just jumpstart this week a little then go Monday, Wednesday, Friday starting next week.

Coach_Mac

Here's a push up challenge that sounds easy but it's not...
-do 10 push-ups
-get up on your knees and do 10 "raise the roof" motions
-do 9 push-ups
-get on kees and do 9 "raise the roof" motions
-repeat this all the way down to 0.

Make sure the "raise the roof" motion is a full one, not a lazy one.
This is tough.

I'm wondering the same thing.

I remember about 10 years ago I got into a strict exercise routine that included numerous pushups per day and my nonstop barely increased. I'm wondering if this program will work too. We'll see. I'm willing to bet the community effort on the board here and the gradual increases we do will help with the mental part. That's huge for me in overcoming any physical challenge. The other thing is - I was looking to get stronger and more fit back then - not to increase my max.

This has to be possible though - I always remember Letterman having those 2 brothers on that did non stop pushups and situps through an entire show - something like that.

so i started tuesday night, topped out at 35 pushups so i started in column 3, did the 5 sets and then an extra 10 pushups a few minutes later. yesterday was fine, just a little sore, but i woke up today and my chest is destroyed. i cant reach up high very well and i struggled with one pushup, so im definitely gonna need an extra day off. is there anything to take that will help rejuvinate me faster? do protein shakes or supplements help with this? i know i shouldnt have started so aggressively and probably just need to wait this out, in the meantime i can still do my kettlebell stuff so that will keep me busy

go over to GNC.com and check out products like Cell-tech or No-Xplode. They should be taken when lifting and not just for push-ups but i dont see the harm in taking it here since you're looking for muscle recovery just the same.

L-Glutamine works well. But some low intensity KB work is probably the best thing. I've always found that the best thing for soreness or injuries is exercise. Increasing blood flow to a sore/injured area and keeping it moving does wonders.

He found me in generally good health and gave the ok to proceed, but advised that I "start slowly".
So I did 5 pushups last year. what level does this place me in????

I'm in on this starting Monday, but I think I'm going to do a modified version of the program with jackknifes

So MWF...pushups
Tu, Th, S...jackknifes.

Get the abs some work as well.

I've been doing crunches after my pushups every day. And doing other exercises on T Th Sat. (I prefer to take one day a week where I don't work out at all to let the body rest)

Crazy week in and out of work last week so I'm starting this week on week 1.

Column 3, finished with a very weak 12 on Level 5.

I had to sneak up to our server room where the AC is cranking in order to complete this without getting back to my desk looking like a sweaty maniac.

we should have some sort of party when this is all done. doing wk 1 day 3 tonight, back to normal now thanks everyone for the suggestions especially celebrity guest jayjay. what seemed to help the best was after the day of chest pain, i struggled through 10 pushups and that really helped loosen up the muscles (i think) cause things were totally fine the next morning. i decided against the cell tech and no xplode, for now at least, but picked up some met-rx protein plus powder from the tj's i work at. not too bad in a blender with some ice, milk, and a spoonful of jif

Haven't been keeping up the jackknife thing I wanted to do on the off days.

That was yesterday, (a day off schedule), and today I tested for max and could only do 39. That was odd.

Pullups, Week 1, Day 3, (yesterday): 15, 13, 10, 10, Max = 11.

I forgot I don't need to do a max pullup test and I did it anyways. Max = 17. That's an all-time record, and 4 more than my max test a week ago. So despite not having a rest day before my tests this workout seems to be working; in two weeks I've increased my max pushups by 5 , (counting yesterday's 41), and in one week I've increased my max pullups by 4.

I've just started working out this month, and in 2 weeks' time (working out 3-4 days a week) I've gone from barely being able to do 10 push ups to the point where I can do 4 sets of 25 with a 2 or so minute rest between sets, do some other exercises (squats usually), and then go back and do 4 more sets of 25. The last few sets are straining as a motherfucker, but I can do it.

I'm going to try this push up plan on a bit of an accelerated level -- in the form of I'll start with day 1, then in a couple hours or less I'll try day 2, and so on. Since I've found that after 5+ years of virtually no exercise, I was able to start adapting quickly in only a week, I may as well do it this way. Let's see what I can do.

EDIT: Quick update: 10-10-8-6-29.

Was only going to do 25, but I felt good enough to do more, but got lazy before the 30th.

Week 3, Day 2: 27, 19, 19, 15, Max= 31

Pullups, Week 2, Day 2: 16, 12, 4, 7, Max = 6

Yesterday I did 20 pullups to impress a chick, so I'm going to call that my max after 2 weeks. It's better than I expected at this point.

So now that some of us are at the end of week three - the halfway point of this thing - what are the predictions of whether you're going to be able to do 100 consecutive pushups three weeks from now? I don't think I'm going to make it. I figure I could probably do 50 now if this were a test weekend, and while that's a personal best it's a long way off from 100 considering it's only 14 past my starting test of 36. Unless there's some hidden principle in this workout that creates massive improvements in the later weeks, I think I'll be lucky to get to 75 in three more weeks. But if I continue past - re-doing weeks when I can't complete the workouts - I can eventually hit 100. My goal now is to hit 100 by my 40th birthday which is just about 6 weeks from now.

For pullups I think I'm already seeing better progress in just two weeks, but I can't see me getting to 100. I'll be happy with 30 to be honest, but, I don't know, maybe I can get to 50 by my birthday at this rate?

I felt and did better today than week 3 day 1

27,19,19,15, max=35*

I must * myself because my coach/23 month old is "helping me so I do have to stop during a set or two and read her a quick book or whatever. On my 35 max I did 25 then she crawled under me so I stopped briefly and did another 10 more to truly exhaust myself. I'm still amazed at the progress I'm making. I want to do a hundred at the end of this.

Good thing you stopped. It wouldn't do to have the neighbors see you doing push-ups over an infant.

Finally started week 2 today. Not bad, not great.

12, 12, 9, 7, 25(max) -- So overall 65. Definitely getting stronger, though.

I also ran a mile today, which is the first time in at least 6, possibly 7 years.

And I'm also down to a svelte 247 pounds, down 3 from Thursday and down about 20 since the last time I weighed myself 3-4 months ago. And I only just started eating right and working out at the beginning of August.

I found week 4 Day 1 to be alot easier than Week 3, so I'm guessing this thing is working. I had a little trouble with the final set and just hit the min 27, but I think it'll be good to do what I did last week of doing the previous night's set again with double the time between sets and then take the weekend off. (I do know there is a new max test again this weekend)

i almost made it but im deciding to be truthful here and i failed at the max. i only made it to 20 on a max of 40 but i stopped for 60 seconds and did another 20 to get to the max. so here it is.

40, 32, 30, 25, Max= 40 (split of 20 & 20)

Week 4, Day 3:

30, 22, 22, 20, Max= 31

Pullups - 20, 15, 15, 12, Max = 16

I'm blown away I could do that many pullups, even after I stunk at the pushups. As to whether this is a sham: it's definitely not going to deliver on it's promise of 100 in 6 weeks. A few of us were off to a pretty good start to begin with and have followed the workout to the letter but we'd have to triple our max to reach the goal and at week 5 I don't know if any of us have doubled it. On the other hand, I've done an ass-load of pushups the last couple of years and have been plateaued at 36 most of that time. I've got passed that by deciding to stick to this program. I still think there's a long-shot chance I'll reach 100 by Oct 14. For pullups, which I haven't done much of - ever - I've gone from 13 max to, probably, 23 in 3 weeks. I'm more than happy with that. The real test of the results of this will be this: when I finish the 6 weeks of pullups I'll take the Cindy Circuit Challenge again - sets of 5 pullups, 10 pushups and 15 bodyweight squats in 20 minutes. I think my record is 13 or 14 and I haven't done it since starting this. The hardest part of the Cindy is the pullups, followed by the pushups. Whatever this workout accomplished will show up in my improvement on the Cindy. I think it's going to be big.

After resting my hurt shoulder for a week, I couldn't hit 45 pushups last night to redo Week 6, so I'm dropping back to Week 5 tonight.

And for those doing the pushup challenge still, take note that the guy who created it has updated the program. I received this email last week.

Good Evening Hundred Push Ups Challengers!

It's been several weeks since my last update, so figured it was time to send another. Hopefully the push ups plan is still fun, still challenging and your significant strength and fitness gains are here to stay!

If you're one of the success stories who recently completed the hundred, no longer on the plan, or simply not interested in receiving sporadic email updates, just send a quick reply and I'll take you off my personal push ups people list right away. As mentioned on the Hundred Push Ups web site, I will never sell, barter or rent your email address, so rest assured your information is not on any other mailing lists aside from my own personal database of people that sent a request to be added to the "Take The Challenge" page.

Last time I mentioned that the initial response to the training program had been staggering and that since its launch on June 9th, the Hundred Push Ups web site had received over 1.1 million unique visitors, comprising more than 3 million page loads. Today the stats are even more amazing; over 2.4 million visitors made up of 6.3 million page loads! Thankfully, my unlimited bandwidth web hosting account has taken care of any access issues you may encounter.

So, on to the site updates:

1. Earlier today I added a new push ups logger page: http://hundredpushups.com/logger.html The Push Ups Logger is a great online tool created by Swedish developer Viktor Nordling; the purpose of which is to allow people who take part in the challenge to log their results and be inspired by others. Feel free to take a look at Viktor's web site (http://www.pushupslogger.com/) and while you're there, why not sign up and start logging your workouts?
2. The Take The Challenge page has continued to grow at an alarming rate and now boasts well over 700 challengers. I would guess I'm still adding about a half dozen new challengers every day at the moment.
3. The initial CafePress store seems to be growing in popularity with several more orders over the past couple of weeks. I've received several requests asking for merchandise and apparel that can be worn after the challenge has been met, so with this in mind I created a second store called "i did the hundred". You can find a link to both stores on the Merchandise page.
4. The number of challengers that have officially "done the hundred" is now up to 44. Remember to send me an email when you're ready to be added, and don't forget to download the shiny orange badge to proudly display on your blog or web site.
5. The biggest change I've saved for last. Based on the enormous amount of feedback received over the past two or three months, I've spent many an hour fine-tuning, tweaking and updating the six-week program. Many of you felt that the plan had too many "tough" spots and the jump to certain weeks were too severe. Along with several very helpful push ups people, I've personally spent the last four or five weeks creating and testing a better six-week challenge. The rate of progression should be smoother but the results just as impressive. Remember, attempting the hundred push ups challenge is no mean feat, and it will definitely test you to your limit. Hopefully the improvements will be well received. If you're halfway through the program and looking for the original plan, Weeks 1 through 6 are still available for a limited time at the following locations:

http://hundredpushups.com/o_week1.html
http://hundredpushups.com/o_week2.html
http://hundredpushups.com/o_week3.html
http://hundredpushups.com/o_week4.html
http://hundredpushups.com/o_week5.html
http://hundredpushups.com/o_week6.html

Thanks for understanding and please continue to provide feedback on both the new and old six-week programs.

On a personal note, I achieved the magic hundred back in the middle of August and have maintained my new-found strength by testing out the new plan and constantly challenging myself: http://www.runbulldogrun.com/push-ups/guess-what-i-did-the-hundred-push-ups-that-is/

Thanks for reading this update and I wish you every success no matter where you are in the program.

Happy Push Ups!

With two weeks left of my 30s I'm picking this back up now. The program obviously promises something it can't deliver and I don't expect to get to 100 in the next two weeks, but I'm going to see what I can do by my Birthday.

Yeah, I completely gave up on this one. Honestly I was using this to help motivate me to work out, and now that I'm way past needing motivation (the enjoyment I get simply from working out is motivation enough), I'm just done with this. I stopped enjoying it, so fuck it.

At this point, I'm just going to concentrate on all the great stuff I'm doing now, and by the time I reach my goal weight loss, combined with the strength and muscle mass I'm beginning to get from my small lifting program, I'm going to work toward getting 100 in a row, and I'm sure I'll be able to do it. I've already hit a max of 46 or so, and that was weeks ago, and I'm stronger now, so I can probably do 50 by now, and in a few months I'm confident I'll be able to do 100.

An update will come in December or so.

Max tests: pushups = 53. That's less than last time. Pullups = 29.

I think I'm done with this. I've got three more days to work out hard, then I take three days off, then try to break some goals for burpees and pullups on my birthday. After that I'm changing my focus to go for strength and doing boxing and kickboxing workouts. I don't think the results of the workouts from this point on are worth the effort. I'll do 100 pushups when I get sent to jail or drafted.
