what's with the kids that sell candy bars outside of walmarts and targets? they always have the same story that the money goes towards new basketball uniforms. i'll buy a candy bar if i'm hungry, but i never believe their story. does anyone?

I don't buy it, no pun intended. I just assume they stole a bunch of candy bars and are trying to make bank.

what do you care where they came from? if youre hungry buy a bar, if you aren't walk away. its not like they're AIDS infested candy bars.

oh they got those too, they're legit
The vast majority of the time, some guy buys a boxes of candy bars from costco or whatever and then rounds up a bunch of kids and asks them if they want to sell stuff. I guess the "basketball team" story sounds more legitimate. It's not really any different than the people selling bottles of water on street corners.

In most cases, the ones that are selling them for legit fundraisers, have candy bars that have special labels. The candy bars are usually larger, and will have some sort of logo on them that differentiate them from store bought ones.

If that were true, the CYO basketball team in my neck of the woods would have a "JoeTheBartender/Peanut m&m's arena".
I mean Izod bought the Byrne arena and they haven't sold a shirt in 20 years!

The do it in front of grocery stores and sometimes retail stores but there's usually about 4 or 5 kids, with a parent and the kids are actually wearing their team uniforms.
At least that is how it is in the suburbs.

Actually, it's both. It was Izod Lacoste until 1993.

If you are ever approached by "cheerleaders" selling candy as you approach the Holland Tunnel in JC DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!!! The PA cops chase them away. There's a woman who pretends to be their coach or a mom of one of the cheerleaders. Total scam.

Actually they are quite young-- 8 or 9. It's pretty sickening that the adult encourages them to go into traffic and approach stopped cars in order to sell candy bars.

I hate those fundraisers that work the intersections on the weekends. Begging for change from every car at the red lights. Once upon a time on Route 27 in Edison I saw the cops out there, lights flashing, in semi-uniform, with change jugs in their hands. F you pal. You get nothing.

where i live those kids sell the king size bars...but for like $3 or $4. i just left the supermarket and know i could get 3 of those for the same price. so i rarely ever buy. if i know they are for a local team and have a buck i'll just give it to them w/out getting candy. i usually have no more then a dollar or two in my wallet anyway.
the best i saw was on the subway when a kid(probably 13-16 years old) came in looking for people to buy candy from him. he didn't go the usual charity route...he actually made it a point to mention it wasn't for charity, but was looking to make himself some money. i bought into it and got a bar.
