With food, fuel, everything prices soaring we did a big garden this year but only got marginal results. We got lots of green beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes but that is about it really. Anyone else keeping a garden to feed the family? What vegetables have you had good yields from? I have direct sun all day.

I have a little over an acre. I have my coop built and am going to keep a few hens and guineas..

These veggies like sandy soil:

- Leeks
- spinach
- asparagus
- arugala

You can check with any land-grant college's "cooperative extension" or 4-H clubs for more.

The point is not only so save money but to provide a healthier, better quality food. I'd prefer to have my produce come from my yard rather than a 2k acre field with Mexicans shitting between rows, sprayed with pesticided, then shipped and handled for days or weeks before it gets delivered to my local grocery store. Most of the posters here are probably from more urban areas than suburban Va though and have no choice.

Most urban areas have farmers' markets where there are rules about what's sold, mostly to do with production, but you've gotta figure that nobody's traveling more than 5 or 6 hours to get there and sell their stuff.

There's even a movement in Chicago and NYC towards grow-your-own within the City limits.

This is true, there is good produce available if you look for it.
I have even considered doing some hunting. My wife is an amazing cook. She could make venison taste great I'll bet. I have guns.

My girlfriend is a wiz in the garden.

She grows...

Veggies

cucumbers
tomatoes
green beans
squash
brussel sprouts
broccolli
pumpkins
aparagus

Fruits

watermelon
canelope
strawberries
blueberries
black berries
rasberries (yellow red and black, which she grows from her patch)
wineberries

She also has...

a peach tree
a cherry tree
a pair tree
a persimmon tree

I love to watch her garden. I get that "awwwww'' type feeling and then I fuck her with her dirty feet.
