i love the melon cantaloupe
but every time i eat it my face goes mildly numb and i get a very slight buzz
it is not the sugar because i can eat 10 candy bars and not get this reaction
it is not artificial chemicals because it happens whether it is regular cantaloupe or organic
what in cantaloupe might be causing this reaction?

Occasionally some people get an allergic reaction from cantaloupe that is characterized by numbness or tingling of the mucus membranes that come in contact with the melon. This is sometimes associated with asthma. I'm trying to find you some hard data on this, but as you can imagine, people aren't spending a lot of research money on a rare but mild reaction to a common fruit. If I find anything cool, I'll pass it on.
As long as you don't have trouble breathing, visual changes, or swelling of the throat, you can probably eat cantaloupe. If it bothers you further, an allergist may be able to help you.

yes this was more of a curiosity question rather than a medical issue
it is actually a pretty neat feeling and does not interfere with breathing or anything else
i quite enjoy the little buzz i get
thanks for the info

rereading my response, the 'research' crack reads to me as if I was minimizing your question; I really wasn't...it's just that because studies cost money, a lot of non-life-threatening phenomena have never been adequately researched. There are all kinds of things that we treat every day that no one has ever looked at scientifically simply because they couldn't guarantee getting a publication out of it, or no entity was willing to put up the money for it.
Such is life...enjoy your cantaloupe!
