Scientific evidence that men should not be vegetarians. (http://www.businessweek.com/lifestyle/content/healthday/617728.html?chan=top+news_top+news+index_lifestyle )
Eating half a serving of soy food a day lowers sperm concentrations and may play a role in male infertility, particularly in obese men, Harvard University researchers report.
The reason for this relationship between soy and sperm count isn't clear. However, researchers speculate that soy increases estrogen activity, which may have a negative affect on sperm production and also interfere with other hormonal signals.

Should not I have been a vegetarian I would not have eaten soy should I? Should I eat soy I should also eat beans, shouldn't you? Should I test my testosterone levels, they should be around 800, should be....
Should you be a fatty, should your testosterone be lower? Should be.

I've been a vegetarian since 1987 and knocked up the wife twice in a three-year period. Guess I have super sperm!

That finding might have some of you throwing down steaks...
the rest of you might want to reconsider what orifice it's going in (http://ezinearticles.com/?Sperm-Taste---10-Simple-Tips-For-Better-Tasting-Semen&id=164106)

(1) The study was emphasizing problems "particularly in obese men" ... obesity in men and women actually reduces fertility because the excess fat changes your hormonal balance.
(2) Because the phytoestrogens in soy are so similar to estrogen, many breast and ovarian/uterine cancer survivors with estrogen-responsive tumors are advised not to eat soy. We had one woman checking in for last year's Avon Walk return her freebie UHP box of vanilla soymilk and a SoyJoy energy bar to us because her tumors would have been affected had she consumed them.
(3) There are other ways to get protein if you are a vegetarian. Beans and rice. Quinoa. Amaranth. Millet. Spinach (yes, spinach.) Cheese. .... I don't have to go on.

for the record, i was only half-serious. a thread called soy lowers sperm count would have been a tad boring.
but still most of the vegetarians i know consume copious amounts of soy, especially in things that are supposed to taste like meat.

It's not so much that they're supposed to taste like meat, but they're supposed to have the same texture to help someone who'd been a committed carnivore ease his or her way into eliminating meat from their diet.
Most of the meat-replacement stuff on the market is garbage, though, which is really unfortunate. It has SUCH potential!!!! (I used to eat processed soy cheese and soy cold cuts until I decided that a rubber eraser would taste better. Ick.)
And consuming too much of anything is a bad thing ... "copious amounts" is a little excessive for anybody. There are some studies that suggest increasing soy intake in some women may contribute to heart disease and certain types of breast and reproductive cancers, and these were long-term studies released after touting the benefits of soy...and soy ended up getting into EVERYTHING marketed to women, from lotions and potions with anti-aging promises to vitamins and other foodstuffs. I may even have read that it can contribute to osteoporosis, but maybe I'm confusing it with another something I read. (Check the "Personal Health" columns with Jane Brody ... that's usually where I get a lot of my information.)
There are totally other ways to get your protein. Mark Bittman, a.k.a. The Minimalist, recently (Dining & Wine section, week of June 8th 2008) did an article about how to increase your vegetable intake and he described different veggies' protein and mineral contents. Your vegetarian friends should read the article (it's free online when you subscribe to the NY Times online ... also free.)
